NEVER pick up a tree, that is in a pot, by it's trunk. I worked at a big expensive garden center for several years...and doing that would get you in big trouble..it weakens it....fyi. :o)
Thanks man, I've been wondering about this stuff. Getting ready for trees. What's your take on transplanting wild berry bushes along the edge of the yard and/or a green house?
@TurbotortoiseStickle Berry bushes along the of of the yard is win win if they are the kind of berrys that have thorns. Get them thick enough and high enough no more problem with intruders. Good place to put cactus or citrus root stock trees. Lots and lots of stickers. And those citrus root stocks are about 2 inches long and razor sharp. Just make sure that what you plant will do well in your hardieness zone and soil type.
@SustenanceNCovering Thanks, so my plan is doable (smiles). I live in the north so I am a little limited. The berry bushes I'm going to use are from a large clump at the edge of my yard and a few other local areas. I can't plant cacus, I was thinking of thorn-apple, wild rose, and honney suckle trees with a few iron wood to make it a little harder to chop through. What you think (you know more then me about the plants)?
@TurbotortoiseStickle Stickers and cacti will never keep chickens in, or coyotes out, but as for humans. A barrier that makes food is a win win situation. I'm actuallly trying to fill my whole property in with trees and shrubs. I don't even want people to be able to see my house.
thanks for the video...I hope to be able to buy my own home this coming spring and planting some fruit trees is one of the first things I plan to do...this vid will help me to not get ripped off when shopping for trees
We had a great local nursery here. the guy and his wife really enjoyed what they did. But, he died and the family sold the land as it wasn't a very profitable venture. Although, it did help him and his wife raise their kids. I sure hated to see him go.
@SustenanceNCovering I'm not sure that day ever existed, but i do know that with the cost of land among other things they would not be able to survive in todays world. This area used to be nothing but woods and farmland, now it is wall to wall subdivisions, trailer parks, strip malls, fast food, big box stores, and golf courses. there are very few farms left and the ones that exist are either owned by large corporations or are quickly being driven out as they can't compete.
@luvintherawlife BTW I just watched the guerilla grafting vid. Fantastic, but probably just as futile as what I am trying to do. There will probably be a day when the police show up at my house with a chainsaw and a court order.
@luvintherawlife It is very strange that everybody is talking about the end of the world, and yet people at lowes are still walking out of the garden department with Oleanders, Camelias, and my all time favorite flowering pear. Doesn't anybody realize that flowering pear is exactly like regular pear except that when the flowers fall off of a regular pear you get enough fruit to last a family of four all year? I have secretly planted fruit and nut trees on 6 of my neighbors properties.
If I had the land I would use rock wool and rooting hormone in a dome and I would never buy a tree of that species again, cloning is cheap and easy, you could clone literally hundreds of plants for about 50-60 dollars. All you need is a scalpel 3$ (or clean sterilized sheers) the rock wool or other rooting media 15$ for 99, the rooting hormone is around 7-15 depending on what you choose, I use gel by rootech, and the dome 7-9$ for the top, and 3-4$ for the bottom of the dome.
@ManTheBush Amen. Sadly I only have 2 wooded acres. There are about a hundred trees here that I have cloned, but I ended up planting them on other peoples property. I try to only plant unique species on my property. I now have about 400 fruit and nut trees on and near my lot and most are one of a kind.
good information....about 20 years ago i bought 12 trees thru mail order...all but 3 made it so i guess that wasnt to bad...but your info has made me think about buying thru the mail again
I bought plants and trees on the internet super low prices got me. Well they were all crap but said they were guaranteed for a year. So they wouldn't give me my money back just kept sending me the same sorry crap over again. I think out of the total of 20 trees/plant I got maybe 4 are alive today. And still sorry plants. Never get plants though the mail no matter how cheap. Had good luck with mail order seeds though.
@kentuckyprepper1792 I don't know if rootone works or not I always use it when starting cuttings, but never thought about using it on cut tap roots. You can harvest natural hormone from willow. The stuff from the store is kinda expensive.
@SustenanceNCovering I did not know that about the willow. I'll be researching into the extraction. I'm hoping in the future to do a series on "prepper chemistry." One episode, in particular, on getting salicylic acid from willow bark for aspirin synthesis. Thanks for watching!
You know, it always amazes me when I watch your videos because not only are they extremely interesting but super informative!! Thanks and keep up the good work. It really really helps!
i agree with ya on the black pots.i dont think i ever had a plant live that came in a bag.except maybe small tree stock(mostly evergreens) that you plant using a dibble bar.
@elkhound25 I had to look up dibble bar. Now I have one more material posession on my list of things that I can't live without. And just think that when I woke up this morning I never even heard of one.
the main reasons for grafting are (1)to get exactly the same fruit as parent tree and (2)to select a certain kind of root stock to determine the growth size of tree be it a dewarf,semi-dewarf or standard size tree.most root stocks are called a certqain number like MM111,MM109 etc.fruit tree can be reproduced from seed and they wil make fruit but their fruit will be a bit different from the parent tree.
