my dad got me into mustangs when i was young. they are a big part of my family. it kills me to see this happen, it really effects me my dad and i always flew BBD around my house. now that toy will never be thrown away. hearing a mustang go down hurts me and my family. so strange that an aircraft can be such a big role in a family :(
another question.... he didn't bailout manually, climbing out of the cockpit, did he? or do they have some jet like escape mechanism in those old birds now?
The Skyraider is a very, very tough aircraft. The P-51 was simply-made by comparison. Sure, the -51 is tough, but it's light; that was achieved by minimal monocoque construction. They were built like Cessna 150s whereas Skyraiders and Corsairs were built like Mack trucks.
my understanding of this accident is that the skyraider's wing severed all the p-51's rear controls. With no rudder, no elevator, and such a low altitude there was almost nothing the pilot could have done. He made the right decision, live to fly another day.
BBD was my first P-51 fueling as a young line guy. She is missed but as so many others have said, fortunately without loss of life or serious injury for the pilots involved.
terrible terrible terrible. a one second lapse in judgement by the Skyraider. never lose sight of the lead aircraft, turn outside the lead...that was cursed into my head repeatedly... thankfully no lives lost. I would have done as Rob did - aim her at the wheat field and hit the silk.
Look at the bottom of the aft fuselage at 0:44. It's cut almost half way through. Even if there was a decent amount of structure remaining, chances are most of the flight control cables were cut.
Don't think Rob Davies would have bailed out if he could have saved the Mustang. A video shows massive damage to the underside of the Mustang fuselage just ahead of the tailplane and speculation on whether the Mustang was still flyable is proof that flynmid/KuostA are not pilots. Few pilots would bail out if they could maintain control of their machine.
ummm...wow the skyraider loses a piece of its wing and still lands, but the mustang looks fully intact, just a bit knocked off its flightpath but easily regained control, and the pilot decided to bail. i think he could have made it back if he wanted to try but i undnerstand not risking it.
The 51 was probably still flyable, and he probably could've kept flying, but given the low altitude, and distance from the crowd. I would have most likely done the same.
Pretty sad to see a Mustang loss... Thank goodness both pilots are ok... And the skyraider. Those are probably rarer than the Mustang anyway and the damage seems repairable.
i don't see any damage to the mustang in the mid air. the reason he bailed out was probably that the airplane was out of control, possibly going into a spin? so he had to get out.
Amazing feats of airmanship by both the Skyraider and Mustang pilot in making the correct split-second decisions to get themselves back on the ground alive, well done gentlemen!
I was there. It was a very sad event, but luckily everyone was OK. Very nice video.

@TheTopBloke Its called poor coordination, they are both lucky they survived at all, most collisions at least one pilot always buys the farm.

I didn't see anything fall off from the Mustang, did he have any control failure? I'm just wondering what caused him to want to ditch so fast?
Scote1992 7 months ago
@Scote1992
The Mustang pilot stated loss of control input and the collision point is near the area where control cables are routed.

The pilot of the Skyraider is a Mustang Killer.

@abhiginimav this is not a mistake. this is blatant incompetent. both in the part of the pilots, and the event organizers.

Douglas Skyraider pilot should be kicked out of the airshow circuit for good. He turns inside of the mustang in a climbing turn...what a idiot.
