I’ve been checking out the original Kung Fu movies that inspired them and have become really interested. I just saw a great doc called “Films of Fury” that just came out on demand and it’s really informative. It has some great movie clips and action scenes too!

@dremorpl no. What I'm saying is that the sequels boiled this scene down to a video game upgrade. Like "You have now gained the powers of the one!" "+bullet stopping power" "+kung fu upgrade" "+ flying"

I thought becoming the One was more philosophical than that. Neo stopping the bullets was just one way he could have dealt with them. He could have deleted them if he wanted to. He didn't have to fight by conventional means anymore. He was more powerful than that. But I guess not...

Like why can't he create new things in the Matrix now? Morpheus explains earlier in the film that the first person to free humans could reshape the matrix as he saw fit. So what the fuck? Neo should have basically gained Dr. Manhattan powers if he had total mastery. But instead they put arbitrary limits to his powers that they never explain so they can drag out this franchise and make more money on it. Fuck.

Neo's transformation isn't just physical mastery, it's also mental mastery. He proves that his powers extend beyond karate by destroying smith from within. He also flexes the matrix afterwards, signifying greater power than just being super good at karate. But I guess he forgets the whole diving-into-people-and-destroy­ing-them trick in the sequels? But they put these arbitrary limits to his powers and never explain why. Like he can fly and stop bullets, but why stop there?

The sequels ruined this moment in the movie like Lucas ruined Yoda in the Star Wars prequels. Neo sees through the matrix. He is all powerful and should be able to unravel the fabric of the matrix at this point, or spontaneously rewrite it how he sees fit. But no, he still has to resort to pulling a metal pole out of the ground to fight off a bunch of Smiths. This scene is much more compelling if Neo's powers extend beyond punching and kicking.

Though this flick has some epic elements: A world of deceit, friendship, daunting battles, death, love, betrayal and hope; had they rearranged it accordingly and showed in the first part the awakening, in the second part the learning and in the final part the rescue and redemption it could have worked; and the time in between would have been easily filled with talk and preliminary actions; and of course with the losing battle of the last free humans against the evil machines.

With a little moderation the movie could have been an almost epic tale (and a powerful anarchist/subversive parable as well); just a little less jumping and fancy explosions and much more talk and it would have been perfect; for the modern sense of the word of course, since today a divine poem like the Iliad cannot be composed anymore, as the epical and cultural basis is utterly lacking; so all art is bound to the boredom, poorness and cowardice of the modern world.

Normally I utterly despise these commercial American future flicks, but this one somewhat attracts me; though it is much darken by the misbegotten attempt to continue the story in spite of that it has been told already; so there can be no other parts: The two continuations seem to me as if someone had made sequel of Lord of the Rings after Frodo has thrown the One Ring back into the fires of mount doom already; this and to overload of computer acrobatics and animations ruined the movie.

Dude 0:54- 1:10 shows how AMAZING it truly is for Neo to just woop Smith's ass like nothing. The ENTIRE movie especially with Morpheus, it shows these Agents almost God-like with them dodging bullets and taking punches like nothing. Then comes Neo awakened, blocks Smith's moves without looking and beats him with a kick...A KICK. Truly an amazing scene.

It's allegory. It does not mean you can stop bullets from killing you. Those bullets are fears, not actual bullets. Life is filled with fears like this that become real only when we're vulnerable to them. I think belief is a factor in this if you examine what morpheus says, but I think to know is equally important. At some point, Neo knew.
