All you people saying the earth is coming to an end, go read wiki on how sinkholes are created.

Sinkholes like this are formed because of bad drainage and from the surface down. The developed infrastructure on the surface will tend to remain intact while the hole develops over a period of time. Once the roads cannot support the weight from above, this is what happens.

The heavy rain was just the needle on the haystack of a city with a poor drainage system.
