Not to rain on your parade, but three of these singers aren't even American, and this song is more about a worldview of the downtrodden than just that of America.
Written by Dylan and covered by The Byrds, but this is a great cover by a very talented line up. This song is an Anthem for the disenfranchised and ill at ease souls who question their Place in the scheme of the things. A masterpiece by Dylan. Great Post.
Saw these guys on hot October, Zimbabwe late 1980s. Amazing, but how sad and how different things are now. Hows about a reunion concert to shine a light on whats happening there!
first verse out of lips of Tracy Chapman tears evaporated all over my face...good old days of 80's while pop shed the only beam of light to life...keep rocking you beautiful people and your smiles are shining forever in memory of our generation...flashing forever..so brilliant, so unforgettable..
Always thought it was the Byrds song first and foremost but forgot its Dylans. What an amzing line up of talent. "For the Confused, Accused, Misused ,Strung-Out Ones and Worse" - most human beings can recognise themselves somewhere in that line.
Well, charlie, this song was sung by Dylan himself at the inaugaration ceremony of Clinton in 1993 after the Reagan regime. This land is your land wasn't to bad either, this time?!
Absolute quality!! Excellet video. Enjoyed Gabriels's performance most. Although Tracy Chapman definitely put some real emotion into her performance too. ;-)
This is what the American Spirit really is about.....
Its about the People who make up this Country..
Not the politics at all......

Great song. Great singers. I've always loved Bruce's version of this, but Tracy Chapman sounded fantastic.

I dedicated it today to the Palestinian people.
bernyparis 1 year ago
@bernyparis there is no such thing as 'Palestinians'. That is just a name given to a group of Arabs in 1964 to give them some sort of legitimacy
TruthinFilm 1 year ago
@TruthinFilm Yes of course. If only you had a time capsule you could go back to 1963 and tell all these people just how illegitimate you find them.

Come on! Dylan at Newport 1964...So much Dylan, Byrds were covering his songs with better vocal.
Via Bob Dylan!

That Verse about 'Each and ev'ry gentle soul trapped inside a jail' should be changed to read 'And for each and ev'ry Muslim soul in Abu Gharib jail'
