A similar case- the east coast of england is rapidly falling into the sea and being eroded. This is simply part of nature. there are examples of this all over the world.
Infact there seems to be more evidence that these islands are in fact sinking due to tectonic movements. Near by islands are not experiencing any sea level rise remotely like this.
I'm not saying this isn't anything to do with global warming, I just wish people would do some thorough scientific research before deciding that one thing is absolutely the only cause of this dramatic change.
It's a shame that people trying to save the world from global warming etc always seem to use extreme and unsubstantiated claims, all it does is turn more people off their cause and creates the stereotype of tree hugging hippies.
Yes, global warming is happenning. Yes, CO2 emmisions are making it worse. But there is the natural shifts of the earth and its character.
There doesn't seem to be any scientific evidence that the water has risen over these islands....
I guess this is just the start of what we will have to face. It's really sad to see this, especially since we knew it since more than a decade that it will happen... especially when you are living in an industialized country. I guess there is also no way to ever stop the avalanche, because the people who take those decisions are capitalist and only have sales figures in their minds and these people dont have anything, especially no oil.
What a shame! What have we done to this wonderful island and these innocent people who even speak the trouth when they say that with such a little industrial big countries could help them out now that the damage is done!?
When i imagine that i live in an industrialized country, that i have food, water and shelter, that my island is not being washed away, that I am safe and warm, then i don't feel comfortable with it, because by my satisfaction lifes of others are being threatend.
do you have a update on the Carteret Islands for oct.22 2011

My heart goes out to the islanders.... Hope the UNFCCC finds a tangible way to help low-lying islanders as fast as possible.

Right, and the west coast is doing the opposite.
I once was at Harlech Castle in Wales; some three hundred years ago the sea arrived right under the walls, now it's miles away.
