  • @0:57 I love how he EXPLODES into the song !

  • Im just discovering EJ in my musical life ¿ could some one give me a list of his best songs ?

  • 1:16 to 1:30 amazing tune, magnificent.

  • class style

  • Reminds me somehow of Mark Knopfler.

  • This tune is so bitchin'......I even enjoy the brief equipment failure at 3:37

  • Bill Maddox you will be missed

  • Needed to hear this again after a couple years. SOMEONE PLZ DIRECT ME TO THE DVD WHERE THIS WHOLE CONCERT CAN BE BOUGHT !!!!

  • damn that clean is so interesting!

    so bright, yet so deep

    crisp, yet so round

    JEALOUS

  • havent listened to this guy in months i missed it

  • thats not bill maddox

  • believe, that's maddox!

  • fuck yo' this intro is crazy!!!!lol

  • damn so so good. head just starts bopping automatically. so much musicality in EJ's playing

  • that was cool!

  • pq se axa q se chava g3 ?

  • en mi opinion eric es uno de los mejores guitarristas del mundo ariva de satriani y vai

  • im sorry i dont speak spanish but i do learn french in school but r u saying that he's better than vai and satriani

  • Yeah!! 1000% much better!!! To say true, all they are different, and play many styles of music, but EJ is my favorite!!

  • i see

  • if youv'e seen the live in texas DVD then it's you know he's he a pedal guy, he had an ass load of them and tweeked with his tube amp alot he only uses full duricell batteries for every show because older ones effect the tone, and he takes the back off of his guitar because it effects the tone

  • when will he play in austin again.???

  • it's a pedal guys, you can see him hit it with his foot before the tone goes clean...

  • ya the master A/B box

  • I somewhat wonder if his amp really IS breaking up/malfunctioning. I doubt it. It is a Hendrixesque stunt, and as we all know, EJ is heavily influenced by Hendrix. Yeah, I agree about EVH's tone. Ever since Van Halen II, i.e, since EVH could afford an Eventide Harmonizer, he has had great difficulty finding it within himself to turn that bloody thing off. It is a great effect, but in a way it is "too easy". I have a 1989 VH concert. Sounds like string of shimmering, extruded sonic plastic.

  • From what I can tell, the breakup noise is actually not his amp, nor is it intentional. I'm fairly certain it's the cord connecting the guitar to the wireless transmitter. Notice how slappy and thin his clean tone is - much weaker than it usually is - and how it seems to break up most when he moves around.

  • Eric has NEVER used a wireless, he wouldnt even use wireless dentures ahhahaha

  • That is partially because the setup he used for this show consisted of 50 watt Marshall heads and Fender Deluxe Reverbs... Before and after ALC he's been using 100 watt Marshalls and much higher powered Twin Reverbs. The reason he used the lower-power amps because he was dealing with his tinnitus (I believe)...

  • He plays at much lower volumes now. Only idiots blow their ears out with volume. Tinnitus is irreversible. Ask Paul Gilbert, who has lost most of his hearing. It's so bad that he can't even wear a hearing aid.

  • EVH cant touch EJ's tone.......

  • Pretty certain that breakup is deliberate - he has it in the intro to Venus Isle, and he'd never leave anything unintentional, especially of that nature in a record.

  • awesome performancel shame that his amp is broke/breaking.

  • most creative and smart guitarist since Page he doesnt just play he thinks!

  • JACO playin bass?:P

  • Chris Maresh on Bass and Bill Maddox on drums.

  • ej is awesome but that bass player is also pretty damn good

  • yeah he is...looks like Eddie V Halen about 28 years ago

  • awsome!

  • it was one of the chords that was acting up, because i was reading an article bout him and he said something like" you know its time to get new chords one they are able to rap themselves up." it was probably the chord. because you se him wiggle something and i think that was his chord shortening out. anyways, beyond that, awesome song. eric johnson is the king of tone, even with a faulty cable :) he' s they best player yet! more people should play like him! it can only help you as a musician. :P

  • "you know its time to get new chords *ONCE* they are able to rap themselves up" he's *THE* best player yet.........just correcting some mistakes, lol.

  • Comment removed

  • you can hear a similar sound at the beginning of Venus Isle (the song) and he said he cut the cord so that was probably it

  • The most toneful and dynamic player ever! And his song writing is incredible as well - he just doesn't get the recognition that he deserves which is a shame

  • What is the name of this music?

  • ZENLAND !!!!!

  • totemo sugoi

  • すごい・・・・・

  • even though one of eric's marshalls was acting up, he handled the situation professionally and delivered a great performance. i know a bunch of guitar players that would have fallen apart had they been placed in that situation. excellent video and an awesome song!

  • That would be me, falling apart and then kicking the amp off the stage.

  • turn the drums up........

and thats coming from a guitaist.....

  • look how calm he was even though there was that slight problem witht he pedals or amps.. he's amazing.

  • The most sound player i have ever seen. I watched him play on the same bill with Allan Holdsworth and Al Dimeola. He came out with just an acoustic and no band. He sat in a folding chair and tore it up for 45 minutes. This guy can play whatever he wants, whenever he wants to.

  • if u take a look between 3'05 and 3'10 u'll c that the problem starts there, when he changes the pedal - theres some strange noise there.

when he comes back to that same pedal that was making that strange noise, the real BIG problem shows up.

2 c what im talking about, u can check the first time(3'05 and 3'10): EJ stops looking at the guitar and looks at the pedals like "Whaz that?!!"

  • it looked like he lost his pick and was searching for another one - and not a problem with the amps!

  • Saw him at House of Blue's in Orlando in '97. Great show.

  • that must of sucked

  • you are joking right?

  • and if i tell you that the new EVH III heads and cabs are made by fender? shoot yourself in the foot.

  • First off, thats one of the Marshall's thats acting up - not the Fender... and second, the EVH brand is made by Fender

  • doesnt Eric use Dumble amps?

  • he did i dont know about now

  • He's (currently) back to Fender Twins and 100W Marshalls.

  • I loved his tone at the 1988 Austin performance

  • Yeah, and EVH was Peavey before that. He (EVH) should stick with what brought him to the party in the first place, a Marshall 100W and stomp box. Listen to VH1, 2, Women & Children First and Fair Warning. Sounds killer compared to the processed tone he seems to prefer now.

  • oh, first time I've seen an amp problem like this.

  • I guess the question to ask yourself is if on a deserted island and could pick only one guitarist to listen to, who would it be? I'll tell you only thing, it's not that ridiculous stuff Vai puts out! Don't get me wrong, Vai is a guitar god but I can't listen to his shit. It's just all over the place.

  • i totaly agree, boring as all get out! EJ all the way!

  • 3:35 amp buzzes, he lookes more frustrated than pissed. He switches a foot pedal and launches into a fantastic improvised solo like the professional virtuoso that he is. Truly the greatest!

  • You're right he does get pissed during a malfunction. Eric's thinking: This fucking American piece of shit equipment! This wouldn't have happened if it were made in Japan!!! Damn Yankees!!!

  • Did you see his amp go out? Oh he looks pissed!

  • it sounded like a break up in a boost pedal or maybe just break up in the amp because amps do that when they are pushed to hard

  • Can someone upload "Once A Part of Me?" It's one of my favorites, and I'm going crazy hunting for it! (Would be much appreciated!)

  • AMAZING , like no other.

  • I think most of Eric's soul is not in the improvisations, but in the music itself.. Nobody else can make such beautiful compositions like manhattan, srv, venus isle, etc... I think his soul is exactly in the COMPOSITION, not in the improvisation. This song for example, its SO COOL!!! Its so groovy, so fun to hear.. thats what I like about him.

  • Eric tiene muchísimo feeling, y lo demuestra en su vibrato, en sus combibaciones de escalas de blues, jazz y rock o en su sonido lleno y sutil

  • Yo pienso que tambien. Lo siento mi español es mal.

  • yeah that was a reply to another commenet i'm not sure why its just hanging around ramdomly at the top here. Urg!

  • Where is the line between soul and technique? Out of all the "guitar gods" EJ is probably the only one that can pull off playing a blues song without making me cringe. His tone alone has more soul than a lot of other players. Just because he's not playing Mississippi blues doesn't mean he has no soul.

  • you mean ppl like buddy guy BB king and Stevie ray vaughn make you cringe when they play the blues??

  • he is a brilliant technician and great tone but he has no soul at all. Give me a guy like Rory Gallagher or Paul Kossoff.

  • No soul?????

  • yea....no soul...no feeling...he plays all from the brain, doesn't sound like anything is from his gut. Again, he is a brilliant technical guitar player....he just has always left me cold.

  • Are you retarded?

No soul? No Feeling? You might want to listen to his records before you start crapping out of your mouth like that. His playing is a LOT more than just Cliffs of Dover FYI.

  • I've listened to several of his records TurdBoy. Unlike yourself, I knew who he was before "Cliffs of Dover" became a radio hit. Again, he is a brilliant guitar player and his tone is fantastic; he just doesn't do it for me. I fail to see how that makes me "retarded". It's called an opinion.

  • six2112, I must disagree with you on several fundamental points. First, what does soul on guitar exactly mean? Does it mean looking constipated and bending the hell out of a couple of notes? Certainly not. Secondly, soul is about "feeling the notes". I can certainly hear and feel the soul whenever EJ plays, and that alone I can respect the man on the guitar. But everybody is entitled their opinions.

  • To each his own.

  • Simply one of the finest guitarist alive.

  • yes, he is, in my opinion, the best

  • i cant find zenland's tab.anybody have this tab?as a text or guitarpro,specially gpro??please help!!

  • ok man thanks very much

  • phenomenal. I love the blues/rock fusion EJ plays. He sings with his guitar and the melodies are just so catchy :)

  • can you give me a copy of this concert man...?

  • I´m putting some of the videos avaliable for download.. The link are on the discription of each video. :)

  • wer did you get this copy man?! tanx for posting!!

  • Got it on eMule.. hehehe

  • I was at this concert. ever since I saw Eric in 1988, I never miss a show by him when he comes to the southeast. Eric puts on the best sounding concerts than anyone around.

  • The song is Zenland, BTW.

  • One of the greatest rock & blues guitarist ever!
