Omg. It's not a hard concept if you guys actually payed attention to the whole movie. One guy during the movie said that a mermaids kiss saves a man from drowning. Meaning, giving the gift to breathe under water.

They swam off together through the pools to freedom. Her further fate is unknown. This was kind off explained in the movie by one of the guys being used as bait..

I love this scene, but I was so confused what had happened to them both!!! but then once I had watched the movie again I saw that they said "A kiss from a mermaid, protects a sailor from drowning" so then I understood. In my opinion this romance is only possible trough Philip's death. He speaks of forgiveness, she speaks about saving him but in a biblical way it is deliverance. Philip is a man of God and he knows the meaning of sacrifice, love and honor. He found love and the only way to keep it as it is is to die or he will be forever cursed to crave for someone he can never be with. She didn't eat him but she definitely drowned him. I would have expected to find such romance in a Japanese or a Chinese film.

The script for Pirates 5 has been finished recently, and I hope these two have a bigger part. I personally think the movie had a "Let's make a pirate movie and throw Jack Sparrow in there on the side doing awesome stuff" feel. Its just sad that a lot of people went to see Jack, but the way this movie was done, he could have easily been written out of it. I would love to see an all Philip/Syrena movie, though. :)

At first, I was very confused by this scene. He was very religious, so did she save him by killing him and letting him go to his god?

Then I remembered the mermaid mythology: a mermaid's heart is as cold as the sea but the man who warms it may live underwater with her forever. I think there should have been more explanation of the mythology, since I only know this because of my mermaid obsession.

If they said this in the movie, they should have made it more clear, since I surely don't remember

I started a book on them that I kind of let go since I didn't have the time, but this summer: Mermaids all the way!!! :D omg. You just remimded me. I havn't drawn a thing in over a year. :O I need to fix that.

I'm pretty positive there are two tails when she's pulling him through the water, but it might also be the way the camera is pointed at them because for a split second I think I saw legs. Who knows. Someone really needs to clear this up so that we aren't pulling our hair out over whether he lives or dies!

That said, I do understand why it was given a backseat: learning from the excruciatingly long and drawn out romance between Elizabeth and Will, I would assume the filmmakers didn't want to force a 2nd love story on us too hard, while simultaneously wishing to include a love story. A love story between Jack and Angelica wouldn't have flown simply because Jack is an already completely established independent bachelor.

There's a lot of people who didn't like the love story, found it pointless and boring. But this scene is so well shot, acted, and scripted. I, for one, really enjoyed the love story, but on one condition: that it be continued in a 5th movie, if there is to be one. I will say the Philip/Syrena subplot was way too underrated, thus causing many (even me, to an extent) to regard it as pointless. I feel its backseat treatment can only mean their story is meant to continue at some point further on.

@carjpie Oh, right. Now I remember the sailor talking about about a mermaid's kiss and breathing underwater. I didn't bother to remember anything positive about mermaids because they were very scary. When the sailors were in the boat and near the shore, I was thinking: "They're screwed, they're screwed." Philip and Syrena, however, was a whole different story, so romantic. I thought she was just seducing him so that she could kill him, but no, it was a lovely ending for them. Great scene.

I know, I loved their story. It didnt' get alot of screen time, but if you were to string all of the scenes that Philip and Syrena have together, it's a story that has a beginning, middle/conflict, and an end/conflict resolution (with a possible later story continuation), so it's a completely legitimate side story unlike a lot of other movies that have too much going on in them.
