There was nothing Garp could do to save Ace or Luffy. Not because of his duty, not because of his pride but because of THEIR pride. Garp is a marine, Ace and Luffy decided to be pirates. His villainy is his complete lack of consideration for morality in his decisions. I don't think Akainu would have really cared what Sengoku had said during this war....Akainu was going to try his hardest to make sure the two highest priority targets...

After being caught and saved by Mugiwara, he made the TOUGH decision to leave his Father behind, do you know how HARD that is? So he wasn't thinking of himself or pride, if so he would have staid with Shirohige. He is now leaving and Mr.Idiot comes and talks to trash about the Man who saved Ace's life. & even if Ace ignored him, Akainu would have just attacked them from behind.
The thing is they couldn't really do Garp vs Akainu, Garp used to be capable of fighting toe-to-toe with Whitebeard for gods sake, and unlike Whitebeard who has so many problems he may as well be half dead even before all the injuries got added on top, Garp is still as powerful as he used to be and he was pissed, it would have been a slaughterfest, sure we would have celebrated Akainu's death, but also lost one of the truly hateable villains of the series a tad too fast.
Akainu and Kizaru are not bad guys, it's a matter of viewpoint, that's the whole point of there existence to show that what we call "right" and "wrong" is only a matter of persepective. Just as black beard said, you will never find the true meaning of "justice" because it is impossible
Akainu may seem like a total douche, but i see him more as a very intelligent and cunning villain: He took advantage of Ace's pride for Whitebeard, and that's what led to Ace's demise :(

Actually, he was really trying to take out Luffy. After Ace interfered, he continued to try to take out Mugiwara then Shirohige, Jinbe, and the other Whitebeard pirates had to come in and protect Luffy. Then Law came and took him out of Marine Ford.
Worse part is that Garp stood by the WHOLE time, in Impel Down & in Marine Ford AT Ace's side & didn't do NOTHING. Then had the nerve to try to stop Mugiwara. Thats your grand-kid! HELP SAVE Ace, or be awesome like Boa Hancock & at least SLIGHTLY help Ace & Luffy. You're their Gichan and you didn't do anything! You decide to try to help AFTER Ace's Gone! Messed Up! Miss Boa Hancock was more help than their own Gichan! & she still continues to help Luffy & keep her position. I Love Boa Hancock!
It's pride. He spent his whole life doing what he think was right; being a Marine and bringing fourth justice. Besides, Garp could've easily taken out Luffy if he wanted to. Instead, he lets Luffy knocks him out on purpose. What was the intention behind that? To help Luffy and Ace. He did everything he could.
Lol Garp didn't intentionally Let Luffy pass. Garp kept getting flashbacks of Ace when he was younger and couldn't fight in that state. Throughout the whole time he was just sitting there thinking about Ace when he was younger and didn't do anything. Yes it was tough for Garp, but in the end he didn't do anything. He didn't help Ace, didn't help Luffy or take down Luffy (as his job was to do so) he just stood and watched everything take place.
Please understand he could've just went and knock out Luffy if he wanted. Instead he chose to do nothing because his pride and grandson is equally as important to him. Garp is not the one to blame, it was Ace and Luffy that chose their own path. It was Ace's pride that led him to capturing Blackbeard despite already knowing the outcome. Don't underestimate pride because it is more important than life.

@LindoKorchi But through it all Garp was holding himself back. He was suffering inside because he had to acknowledge as as being his own man. If he had saved Ace then he would be greatly disrespecting everything Ace had worked to become. After Ace's death though, the flood gates broke. That character depth is why Garp is one of my favorite characters in one piece.

So he didn't know Ace would turn around to fight and gets killed protecting Luffy. I do agree though Boa Hancock is best! She needs to be part of the strawhat crew or at least more screen time.
Its possible, but Ace's death was always a possibility after being captured and Garp knew that. That in itself is wayyyy to risky, and Garp took that risk by not doing anything and then got angry after the high possibility of Ace's death became a reality. & yes, I thought Boa Hancock was going to join the crew, however, just like Vivi she has her own country to run and it's best that way. But more screen time would be good.

However, the only reason the dude survived is because when he fell in that massive pitch underground, it was all with lava, which is what he is, so he was able to quickly heal up. If it wasn't for that, I think he would have been Seriously injured, not dead, because Akainu is an Admiral, he cant be defeated with one punch like PX-7 LOL.

Every scene in the Whitebeard war are epic. Luffy's entrance, Whitebeard pawning the marines, Ace's and Whitebeard's death, Garp about to go bananas....... I could go on and on. Oda starts a war to get someone back, Kishi starts a bro-mance to get someone back. :D
Though we don't know much about Garp's fighting abilities, (I think-I could be wrong!) somewhere in the manga, it says Garp could've been an Admiral but he turned it down. Even so, I reckon Akainu would've have won if they did fight. Would've been one of the most kick-ass fights ever though!

Sure he may be strong, but you have to remember Garp has been doing minor missions w/o getting any stronger. Admirals tackle missions all over the world and continue to get stronger. He has way more battle experience than akainu as well, I'm pretty sure he would win. I know Sengoku would win and I'd bet Garp is fairly close to Sengoku in terms of power.

Lol Garp didn't intentionally Let Luffy pass. Garp kept getting flashbacks of Ace when he was younger and couldn't fight in that state. Throughout the whole time he was just sitting there thinking about Ace when he was younger and didn't do anything. Yes it was tough for Garp, but in the end he didn't do anything. He didn't help Ace, didn't help Luffy or take down Luffy (as his job was to do so) he just stood and watched everything take place.

Please understand he could've just went and knock out Luffy if he wanted. Instead he chose to do nothing because his pride and grandson is equally as important to him. Garp is not the one to blame, it was Ace and Luffy that chose their own path. It was Ace's pride that led him to capturing Blackbeard despite already knowing the outcome. Don't underestimate pride because it is more important than life.

@LindoKorchi But through it all Garp was holding himself back. He was suffering inside because he had to acknowledge as as being his own man. If he had saved Ace then he would be greatly disrespecting everything Ace had worked to become. After Ace's death though, the flood gates broke. That character depth is why Garp is one of my favorite characters in one piece.

You think a man who faced Gol.D Roger, various times and is considered THE HERO, would loose to Luffy? He did do something, But he is a man of pride and principles like Luffy and Ace. @LindoKorchi I think Garp let his guard down after Ace got away, but he wasn't expecting Ace to be pissed at the Akainu's taunt. So he didn't know Ace would turn around to fight and gets killed protecting Luffy. I do agree though Boa Hancock is best! She needs to be part of the strawhat crew or at least more screen time.

Its possible, but Ace's death was always a possibility after being captured and Garp knew that. That in itself is wayyyy to risky, and Garp took that risk by not doing anything and then got angry after the high possibility of Ace's death became a reality. & yes, I thought Boa Hancock was going to join the crew, however, just like Vivi she has her own country to run and it's best that way. But more screen time would be good.

Lol yeah that was funny. However, the only reason the dude survived is because when he fell in that massive pitch underground, it was all with lava, which is what he is, so he was able to quickly heal up. If it wasn't for that, I think he would have been Seriously injured, not dead, because Akainu is an Admiral, he cant be defeated with one punch like PX-7 LOL.

Though we don't know much about Garp's fighting abilities, (I think-I could be wrong!) somewhere in the manga, it says Garp could've been an Admiral but he turned it down. Even so, I reckon Akainu would've have won if they did fight. Would've been one of the most kick-ass fights ever though!

Sure he may be strong, but you have to remember Garp has been doing minor missions w/o getting any stronger. Admirals tackle missions all over the world and continue to get stronger. Don't you think the current Admirals are already stupid strong. They aren't the Navy strongest for nothing. Although, I would have to say it would be a great fight between them two.

He has way more battle experience than akainu as well, I'm pretty sure he would win. I know Sengoku would win and I'd bet Garp is fairly close to Sengoku in terms of power.

I mean the only battle he went through was Shiki, AND Admirals are doing much harder jobs then what Garp does. That just tells us he did not get stronger while the other current Admirals have gotten stronger through their battles.

The other Admirals already on par against Whitebeard who is known to be the strongest man in the world. Hell even Shanks will have a very hard time against them.
