It took a bit to see it, but yes, it's there. As a driver in Melbourne, Australia I would appreciate being told about it, but having said that, I know a lot I work with wouldn't, even if shown the video. I've noticed what appears to be smoke on level crossings when a train passes over & it was due to a bit of road surface breaking away. But it's better to be safe than sorry, & spend hours talking to police, investigators OR a Coroner & to do drug & breath test & spend time writing out a report.
definitely an issue, as IC6071 said, right about at that time frame, you can hear the train going into either emergency or very hard on the brakes, but to my ears, it sounds like emergency, considering the rate of slowdown with the length of the consist.
first of all nice vid...now we've got all the good stuff out of the way.....CUT 90% OF THIS VIDEO!!! since it has nothing to do with the smoking wheels......it just causes confusion.....and well it's boring.....if you want to put it all up, do so but under a different title or somthing....but since most of it has nothing to do with the wheel smoking CUT IT!!! thank you for the vid and your time =)
Well I do actually give you credit and respect, because you are sharing your honest opinion of how you feel, and you are not being vulgar and immature about it. However, the train was stopped anyway, and I knew the conductor, so I figured that I'd let him know. He wanted me to show him where it was, so we drove down and I showed him the car. He said that he was glad that I reported it, because it could have been an accident.
@ic6071 As a railroad employee, this is a good find and even better that you reported it to the train crew. This could have been a derailment if it was left unchecked. Cockroach2008 comment is far from truthful. Keep up the good eye and reporting stuff if it look's bad. It is much appreciated.
Sometimes, when the brakes are applied, an empty car will have the wheels stop rolling simply for the lack of weight on them.
As the wheel slides, the heat generated will burn off any grease that has accumulated in the immediate area (causing smoke) and a small flat spot develops on the wheel tread surface.
This is what causes the characteristic "thump-thump-thump" commonly heard on passing freight cars.
Thanks for the great two-vids-in-one action! Love seeing those American-style center-flow hoppers (with their puffy sides but flat at the top)... I've always loved the way those look... SWEEEEEET!
Thats cools that you spotted it. My dads got the BNSF La Crosse dispatchers number and weve have to report some loose banding wire draggin all over the ground. It was funny hearin the dispatcher tell the train about it only seconds after bein reported.
At signals that have lights and or gates, there is usually a box that houses the electronic components that make the crossing flash. On the side of that box, there is usually a phone number, and a crossing number. When you call the phone #, tell them the crossing number too.
good job on letting the engineer know it could have been bad i had a incident where a taner truck took out a crossing gate and a tech asked me if i saw who took it off and i told him about it!Good job
You can hear a steely-sounding scrape like Shoe on Wheel, but it may have just been a rock or something. Good Catch there, Adam. It was probably more obvious in person when it went by.
ALSO i make this announcement. This Summer I WILL be making it up to Illinois again. dunno for how long, dunno when just yet, hopefully June/July.
no smoke...change title....

You wasted your time and everyone elses!
The railroad will take care of itself without you getting into it!
Boring video!

I'd say you're wasting your time and everybody else's by posting a comment nobody cares about. Have a nice day!

Thanks for commenting. You are entitled and so I am.
I still think the video is boring and his efforts of being a hero are a waste of everyone's time.

Whatever happened is what happened. Nothing I can do about it. Nothing I want to do about it either.
You may do as you feel necessary. I would not get my nose ino anyone else's business, even if danger is imminent.
I tend to keep my business to me and not bother anyone else with my observances.
That is me!
