bdac2k, I think I know what you are talking about. I believe that both of those times you mention are when going from a load to no load. I am sure that is normal and I haven't noticed it affecting performance. My Honda pressure washer does the same thing when I stop spraying water. Make sure you have Oil in it. Ha!
As for the choke, my garage is insulated and it seldom gets below freezing in there. I think I let it warm up about 30 seconds before turning off the choke and moving snow.
Do you have any issues with engine surging? I bought a 621R (same specs) and it surges badly. I can start the blower with the choke fully on, but if I close the choke all the way, the engine cuts off therefore, I need to run the engine at 50% choke until the engine fully warms up. I can faintly hear the surging in your video at 15sec and 36 seconds. I was wondering if you have experienced any issues or if the surging effects snow clearing performance.
Nice Video! The difference between the 421 & the 621 is the year. Last year we had the 221's & the 421's. The 1st number designated if the unit was 2-cycle or 4-cycle. the 2nd number was the clearing width, which on this machine is 21". For the 2011-2012 Winter Season, Toro changed the number to a 621 with the 1st number no longer representing the type of engine. Bottom line is that the 421 & 621 are identical and use the same engine. QZR is Quick Chute, Zip Deflector & Electric Start.
Since the driveway on our recently-purchased home is brick (not perfectly flat and even) I'm leaning towards a single stage SB, and a Toro seems to be the best bet.
Were you happy with yours for the entire winter?
I'm trying to figure out the difference between the 421Q and 621Q and having a difficult time (except for price they seem to have the same specs.).
thanks again for taking the time to post the vid and your thoughts!
@kedelbach I am not sure about the brick driveway. I am sure it will work fine. I would assume that the rubber auger will need to be replaced a little more frequently if used on a rough surface.
I was happy with the snowblower for the entire winter. When I was changing the oil I wondered if I should have gotten a 2 cycle. I do think it is slightly quieter and less smelly than the 2 cycle, so I am still happy with my choice.
@kedelbach I am not sure what the differences are between the 421Q and the 621Q. I know my 421Q had a recall that I took care of this summer. I believe it was a carburetor part that was susceptible to corrosion. A complete guess would be that the 621Q has the new carburetor on it. Again, I have no idea. I would suggest asking the sales / service person at your local store.
My serial number starts with 311 so I believe it is a 2011 model even though I purchased it in Fall of 2010.
@terraspec I was not sure, so I googled it. I know I can lift it by myself onto a trailer. Snowblowersdirect claims it is 84lbs. It seems about the same as my self propelled lawn mower.
@poisedonis I'm trying to decide between a 421Q and a 621Q, but can't seem to figure out what the difference is. Do you know? Maybe the 621 is the 2011 model?
@ImGoonAffiliated I got this snow blower from Weekend Freedom In Savage, MN. I am really happy with my purchase. This was a good winter to own a snow blower. I will never have to shovel again.
I saw your vid last night, and tonight I bought the 2-stroke version 221QE for CA$607.50 + tax. It will join my Ariens Deluxe 28. Great job and thanks.
Terrific video and really nice machine. Congratulations. Thanks for posting this video. It's the first time I've seen the toro 421Q in action. How do you find it for the end of driveway mess the plow leaves on for heavy, wet snow?
@joeraptor1 So far this thing has been a champ. We haven't had any really heavy snow yet. We have had a lot of light fluffy snow. The snow plow stuff hasn't been an issue yet (see end of video). It sounds like another 5"-9" are on the way for tomorrow. I know my back won't be sore from shoveling. I can't imagine this machine having trouble throwing 12" of any type of snow. I did take it through about 2" of plow slush at the end of the driveway it threw it like a fire hose.
@Sirdroid Mine does not have the electric start. The 421QR is Recoil the 421QE is electric. It pulls over very easily. The electric start needs to be plugged in to an extension cord to work, but they do work. The electric start could be useful if you ever break your recoil cord though (so I have heard). Just tell the wife she will have to shovel if you have a heart attack.... That should do it. Cheers!
Wow. That works great! I was thinking about getting a single stage. but now I am getting one for sure!. Can I ask how much did you pay for that unit. I just glanced on ebay and they are going for $700-$800. A little more than I want to spend. But I think if I spend a little extra now it will last me alot longer. I hear toro is great for there reliability
@Sirdroid I paid $699 + Tax at a local store. We got 21 inches of snow this weekend and it was blowing and drifting. It was a little slow going on the waist deep snow drifts, but It worked like a champ. It wasn't short of power, It is just that it is only 12" tall. It is kind of funny how it tunnels through the deep snow with only the chute sticking out. When the snow collapses from the handle cutting through it, you just hit it again. 12" of snow seems to be no match for the little beast.
Thanks for the video - looks like a great unit. I tend to prefer the 2 stroke version but clearly the 4 stroke is a great unit too. Good choice and great video.
That's awesome of you to share and add the detailed report. Your video shows well how these things clean right down to the pavement - and do it quickly. I've got hte 2-cycle version, the 221R (now on its 4th winter). The 4-cycle 421Q's seem to have a bit more grunt than the 221s but both are great.
I've added your video to my Toro single-stage & electric snow blowers playlist.
