Diana Damrau is the living demonstration that great sopranos did not die out with the Callas-Seefried-Nilson-Tebaldi-Price generation. And thank God for that. As for Lucic, he is a worthy lead for her, and you could not offer much higher praise.
I miss the high note in "Vindice avrai". And there's too much over dramatization with flinging of arms in some spots and then no expression of any feeling in others.
the baritone's high notes are so effortless. damrau has a nice voice, but this is not the role to puff up your dramatic capabilities on. gilda is delicate and sweet, she's singing this like it's verismo
She returned back to me the Joy of Music(& even the Joy of Life)since I discover Her 2 yrs ago.I ve seen all great sopranos from our times(XXI century, not from past one). There're some of them very good:but no single one can reach the supreme level of technique, power, vibration, proyection, coloratura, sensibility, etc of Diana's Miraculous Art.
She's the God's Voice over the Earth, singing to an amazed world.
Gilda est magnifique mais Rigoletto n'a pas la voix suffisamment "noire et corsée" si typique du vrai baryton Verdi. Ou alors c'est l'enregistrement...
But it helps, doesn't it ! I mean, you can emphasize some hidden parts of the libretto (even if here I don't see what :D. But those costumes seem to me pretty old-fashioned) or give a new light on often far-fetched stories...
I think there are maybe some aesthetic issues. I find American productions, e.g. with traditionnal mise-en-scene, rather bland and finally outdated.
This is adequate but not much more than that. Its certainly not exciting. There is no incisiveness to either of their singing. The baritone is vague and bland., They don't seem to be engaging with each other musically or dramatically. Part of it may be the staging. I prefer staging that keeps Gilda and Rigoletto close to each other in this duet. Its supposed to be musical combat. Thrust and parry. There is none of that either musically or dramatically.
rigoletto doesn't sound angry.... good pronunciation (I'm italian) but the rest... mmmm, not so good... gilda is not histeric, she's scared of father's rage...final high note is "screamed"... she could do so much better... :-\
oh dear this production is terrible. and the rigoletto sounds rather weak... damrau is over sining a bit but it is all there and the final note is stunning. but the acting is hysterical and odd in many places with this production.
MIsterSoprano, of course, we all have some favourites. Some prefere Leo Nucci. I saw Leo Nucci on the stage as Rigoletto and Zeljko as Rigoletto only here. I find Z.L. very impressive vocally and as an actor, too, one of the best I have seen and heard (perhaps P.Capucilli is the top!) I planned my trip to NY this January as I wanted to see him as Rigoletto really on the stage in a classical production (by Otto Schenk). Unfortunatelly he didn't sing and was replaced by Roberto Frontalli .
I agree - she's great, but he isn't. Nucci is a perfect Rigoletto nowadays, all the others don't even approach. Go and check. As for Gilda, well, seen Netrebko, Damrau, Mosuc, Rancatore,... in last 2 years and all were very good.
I don't think it's horrid by any means, but I agree that his voice seems a bit too beautiful for this role. I think his acting is what got him the part, though. He can sing the notes, sound decent, and portray a really great Rigoletto.
I saw this production live on June 30, and I can assure you that this video doesn't even begin to give an idea of Lucic's Rigoletto. His voice was superb, when heard live, and his rendering of "si' vendetta" was precise, commanding and powerful. A lot depends also on where the microphones are, he really has a huge voice, and this recording doesn't show that.
I am! I'm seeing Netrebko's too [I'm a Luciaholic]. I'm more excited about Netrebko & Villazon but I expect Damrau's singing will be much better than Netrebko's.
it will not be released on dvd ever. thats unfortunatlely the truth. sorry for all who have their hopes up for that. if you didn't tape it on tv....
i just think that lucic and damrau just matched perfectly on stage. there was a special chemistry between them which was absoultely breath taking. i watched the show five times and loved it.
This HAS to be out on DVD soon!!! Does anyone know if DECCA or another label is planning to release this performance on DVD? I just love Diana Damrau!!!
Same!!!!!!!!!!! This HAS to be released!!!! It is heaven!!!! I love Lucic's facial expressions! Diana looks more Lucia (i.e. Natalie at the met) than Gilda though!
I won't be 'really' back until tomorrow. Today I've been packing aaaaaall my things in Barcelona and tomorrow I'm flying back to Ibiza. I hate to leave... Anyway, Diana has cheered me up considerably. And my Eccellente in letteratura italiana too xD I don't know about lingua yet :P
Of course Diana is great here ;-) but Maria Callas is my all-time favourite singer :P, although I think that Diana has reached a level of dramatic singing that is quite equal to Callas'. Diana not only sings beautiful but also portrays Gilda dramatically with her subtle musicality.
The only problem that I had with this production from Dresden were the acoustics for the TV broadcast!!! Unfortunately they were terrible :( No real presence of sound,... although youtube conceals this quite well...

She's a good musician and she knows that she has to wait her voice... Anyway I hope we will see her singing Traviata soon!
A dramatic soprano??? with roles like Brünnhilde, Elektra, Turandot, Isolde, Lady Macbeth, Tosca ????? No offence, but I would rather say that Diana will become a lyric/dramatic coloratura soprano with lighter and lyric roles. I could imagine her in roles like Violetta Valery, Leonora (in Il trovatore), Mimi, Ophelie and Elena in Vespri siciliani; maybe she'll even sing Tatiana some day. I have to think about this a bit more, but I would never consider her a dramatic soprano. Best wishes!!!
Yeah, I think that - concerning the acting and singing - Violetta would be a perfect role for her! "Sempre libera" - that's child's play for her! And she already sang the Brindisi with Domingo, so I would say that for now Diana is more prepared to sing Traviata than Natalie Dessay, but I also can't wait for Natalie's interpretation, although Violetta will be a hard challenge for her :)
Ach, ich fühls es ist verschwunden...^^ Surely I know that she said goodbye to the Königin, but for me she'll always be the best in this role! I don't care for the Rachegötter, I have the Eingeweihten on my side :P
Norma? Why not? She could sing it in the original key like Joan Sutherland, which is in F I think and which makes the "Casta diva " sound even more ethereal - a dream!! Be sure: as far as Diana has sung Norma I'll call her a goddess, for the moment she's an aspirant for this title ;)
Die Eingeweihten???? Unglückliche Töchter... Ich weiss du bist ein Sohn aber so war der libretto... Anyway, Zittre nicht mein liber Sohn.. Ich weiss du bist unschuldig, weise, fromm... Aber Ein Jüngling, so wie du, vermag am besten and put more vids of Diana..
Anyway, you are right, she is the best Konigin and in my opinion only a german singer can be perfect in that role. I hope her Konigin will be back one day.
Nah, her voice is growing. It is now more appropriate for lyric roles. Coloratura lyric roles, of course, but not that firey. Maybe I'll see her Pamina in Vienna this August :D
