  • This old lady WW2 cruiser was not much more than a target in 72 . I assume it had a terrier , but really without its 76mm it was even more vulnerable than a Korean war cruiser. I believe it was straffed by Mig 19/21s a few month later with serious damage. Nevertheless Des Moine and Salem should have been reactivated instead of Wisconsin and Iowa because their ammunition stocks were 20yrs newer, therefore more accurate than the 16 inch and those 8inch shell could have been made in the 80s.

  • I served with the OK City in 1972. I was on the USS NEWPORT NEWS CA-148. We went into Haiphong with the OK City in May of 72. And again in August when the PT's jumped us. Nice video. Thanks for sharing. Dave

  • Being in the eng room durning those time were answering bells from the bridge like crazy

  • I was On the Uss Oklhoma City Main control I remeber steaming up North

  • I came aboard the Okie Boat a few days later when it steamed into Subic, then we headed right back out the line. I was on the bridge on May 9/10 when we went into Haiphong Harbor. Saw all their shore batteries open up on us - talk about an "E" ticket ride! We picked shrapnel from the decks the next day - I remember boxing it up and sending it off for analysis.

  • I served on the Oklahoma City...I remember we were often under heavy fire in 1972. The word was passed for all hands to stay inside the ship but being a radarman I had to stand bridge watch. There's glass windows all around on the bridge so I could see these rounds coming in and landing in the water.
