  • 4:24 Best guitar part ever.

  • I honestly never listened to Mastodon until the Crack the Skye, and really I'm thankful I did. Really "prog" is the best for of music there can be, it's really hard to make a "prog" band sound bad. Haha.

  • I'm glad to hear that from Brent. More prog metal! I might get flak for this but I wasn't in to the hardcore scream-o stuff they were doing before.

  • @subjectb screamo...screaming emo...just because a band has screaming in its lyics it doesent make it screamo. screamo is a genre

  • First Act guitars are great, a lot of artists playing with them, Kurt Ballou plays on one almost all the time

  • Hi I wish you success

  • Bill is such an underated rhythm player.it would be awesome if he and Brent did dueling guitar solos, like Machinehead does.

  • Is Brent a Shriner?

  • Bill Kelliher lookls like Gary Oldman :P

  • I always thought that I'd find out that they're just guys. But they're fuckin gods. Fuck!

  • its awesome how they really get to do what they want and branch out so much. glad to see they're having so much fun with what they're doing.

  • Wonder what kind of guitar Brent is playing at 2:11. Surprised to be seeing him play a Strat model

  • @TheSneezyP It's a First Act guitar, like one that you would buy at Target or Walmart for $100. They record all of their solos on those guitars, and they've used First Act guitars even in Remission and Leviathan, if I'm not mistaken. it's fucking hilarious.

  • @AntonDoesMusic oh yeah, Matt Pike uses them too. FA makes some quality guitars at professional level though - from what I've heard

  • @TheToadSaidGo Yeah that's the one!, cheers!=]

  • Hey can anyone tell me what type of guitar Bill is playing?=]

  • @TheInsertsmileyface at 4:00? I think that's a 9 string double cut melody maker

  • "we were fuckin god damn playing fucking as fast as we could and screaming our heads off and shit"

  • @068672039 That part always makes me laugh. Every time.

  • i love this djent type stuff

  • @veeragandersucks Mastodon is not djent.

  • @Nameless164 yeah, they pretty much invented djent you fuckin retard

  • @veeragandersucks Djent is stuff like Periphery. Mastodon is just metal/progressive.

  • @Nameless164 mastodon is djent. periphery is pop punk like metallica

  • @veeragandersucks ...Oh.. You're a troll.

  • @Nameless164 damn...

  • @veeragandersucks You're new to this trolling business aren't you boy?

  • @Bill6650 nah, just wasn't trying that hard is all.

  • @veeragandersucks Mastodon is not djent, nor is metallica pop punk

  • @JoRdOguitarman1 my bad, i meant black metal actually.

  • What are they playin at 1:37

  • @ComfortablyNumbAgain crack the skye :)

  • yo fresh ray bans

  • "They're so fucking god damn fast!" ROFL

  • you were right. it wassss a good ass album

  • Little did we know, Crack The Skye would become the best record ever.

  • @gnrcr only to be later topped by The Hunter

  • @gnrcr false

  • 3:37...he's clearly a star trek fan

  • @tuboflard3000 star WARS

  • @tuboflard3000 ur either a dumbass or blind, its star wars not trek and u found out he was a STAR WARS Fan at 2:53 your abt 40 sec's late

  • @calthar13 Someone clearly doesn't understand sarcasm.

  • @calthar13 hahahha it was a joke!

  • he kinda looks like Adam from Mythbusters

  • FUCK commercials on Youtube.

  • Crack The Skye is not softer, it's heavy but less "chaotic"... Hell, even my dad loved it, and he's a 50 year old jazz pianist.

  • oh my god, what a HIPSTER GLASS :D

  • Brent sounds so much more laid back than i thought he would be

  • I think Crack The Skye is not only the best Mastodon album but the best Metal album ever. Just my opinion, but everything from the music to the vocals and especially the concept of CtS is just amazing. Im really into spiritual stuff like OBE's, astral projection, the spirit world, ghosts and etc. And for me this album jut really stands out as masterpiece, even though ALL their other work is masterpieces as well. this is the one FOR ME. Hopefully "The Hunter" isnt TOO goofy like the song names.

  • @TheCorruptionlives Well I know this was a very strenuous record for them to make, like it took them, what 8 months to write and record it. Like Brent says in this video, he has no idea how they would top this, so maybe instead of topping it musically, they are gonna go the whole leviathan route and make it heavy as tits. I doubt it'll be some random goofy throw away album, these dudes really love music and wouldn't waste everyones time with that

  • @xx2n23 you're so cool. i wish i could be like you, so stuck up and snot nosed. if you don't like it don't listen you little dingleberry. you'll learn eventually that Mastodon stomps all over the crap you listen to.

  • 4:06 - what guitar Bill is playing??

  • @Logik426 its his custom first act nine string :P

  • WHY did he CUT the MOUSTACHE!!!!????

  • @xx2n23 It's okay, they don't like you either.

  • Reminds me of seth rogen. "We could call it, CaCunt! Its a Cacoon, with a Cunt!"

  • Something tells me that Bill is a Star Wars fan.

  • @Raifo92 Wikipedia? haha

  • @Raifo92 Possibly...

  • @Raifo92 Really!? No Way! What tells you that?...

  • @Raifo92 yeah me too :P

  • @Raifo92 Yeah, he did. To all of us.

  • 39 people don't like to play guitar solos,(losers.)

  • brent kinda reminds me of alan from the hangover :D

  • i think he likes star wars

  • best album since Master of Puppets...

  • @MetallicaRush101

i think there were albums after master of puppets that beat it, even before crack the skye. painkiller, dance of death, symbolic, the sound of perseverance, this age of silence, obzen, inhumanity, slaughter of the soul, and i think blood mountain beat MOP too. ride the lightning is metallica's best album imo.

  • Crack The Skye is my favourite album of theirs!!!

  • Leviathan is still my fave album if theirs.

  • FUCK YEAH! GODZILLA SHIRT!

  • 2:54 HOLY STARWARS

  • holy shit those yamaha hs80's are fking EVERYWHERE!!!!!! every studio has a pair!

  • KEEP PRESSING 6 AND HEAR WHAT HE SAYS

  • musically, cracke the sky is their best record. the lyrics are the deepest, the guitar solos um... exist, it's more progressive and well thought out, and simply more developed. it isn't as heavy, but does heavy matter? not, not really, and this album is still really heavy.

  • @Fluffypopcicle they are actualyl heavier than previous albums(lyric wise)

  • Lol 1337 likes... Just had to point that out...

  • To answer the question at 0:55 Brent: LOSERS!

  • They're star war nerds too? I love this band even more!

  • Do I spy with my little eye shit tons of Star Wars characters in the background?

  • good music isn't written... it is found and comes like a dream

  • Crack the skye is their best work yet imo. Wasn`t a fan before, but this album won me over. Such a unique sound and great songs!

  • brent always either looks like zach galafinakis or seth rogan... wtf

  • Mastodon is sick and is a very unique band...YEAH!!!!!

  • Hipster glasses.

  • I think there's nothing more powerfull on earth that this Moustach C3PO.

  • This is just what a good band does... And are they related to Zack Galifianakis??? xD

  • I love the 9 strings guitar, I want one of those...

  • this has the Art-Rock...and relaxed feel of the Zep's later album's. Presence. look it up. If you've never studied Achilles Last Stand.... then don't talk about Mastodon "softening"

    nuff said.

  • I wanna hear more doom-like songs, as Oblivion...

  • one of the few bands that consistently gets better every record.

  • 3:!4 someone likes star wars...

  • Um, they definitely got softer sonically. Maybe the lyrical content was "heavier," but there's no way that CTS compares to any of their past albums' heaviness.

  • He would shit if he saw my Star Wars collection.

  • Every Mastodon album is pure genius.

  • Bill needs his mustache to twist at the ends for his next look. Didn't really love the soul patch, i dig the handle bars, but a twisty stache and some mutton chops would be badass.

  • levithan is still the best in my opinion

  • i want those guitars so BAD

  • WOW.....

    Bill.... Starwars fan maybe

  • Am I the only one who thought of Charmin when Bill said "somtimes less is more..."

  • What I love about these guys is how even though they make some of the heaviest (and best) metal out there, they each have a great sense of humor and seem like they generally just have fun doing what they do together. They never seem full of themselves like so many other bands in their genre.

  • It's a rare thing to happen I find but it has for me with Mastodon. They are literally one of the only bands where I have enjoyed every single song on every album. Crack the Skye is an album the should be very proud of and I cant wait to hear the next evolution of Mastodon's sound.

  • @mnicaias no need to say it any better than this.. Mastodon is epic on many different scales/ levels.

  • "Earlier in our career, there were no guitar solos. The music was so fucking god damn fast and crazy that you couldn't put a guitar solo in there..." I don't know about you guys but I think I've heard a guitar solo in pretty much every song they've made...someone's being a tad bit modest haha. Oh Brent Hinds, you fucking rule. MASTODON ROCKS \m/

  • I have to say, after listening for some years to Mastodon, my favorite record is Remission.

  • fuck! i thought i loved star wars!

  • best album out all of them

  • @maxinator3000 this is Crack the skye

  • Oh snap is this the new Get Thee Hence album?

  • Gee I wondering if they are into Star Wars?

  • baha! beer belly at 2:45

  • There's only one BIG problem that I have with Mastodon's albums.

    ,,,,

    ,,,They end.

  • mastodon,is exploring new ways, they obviously, want to make their sound biggern and better, they just want to progress,

  • Brent is exactly right about Crack the Skye being Mastodon's Led Zeppelin 4.

Blood Mountain is still my favourite album so far but Crack the Skye is a close fucking second!

  • Look at all that StarWars, Bill just earned a few more points of coolness

  • I played at a popular metalcore band in the past (century media band) but i hate this teenie metal scream bullshit so much right now.. it is so boring with the same cliches , riff, scream, growls, and the steril pro tools sound makes the drums sound like techno. i am so glad that these guy made REAL rock record that you can still listen in 30 years and not teenie metal for angry nerds. this is a great album. hope the will keep this style up

  • 38 people hates Star Wars.

  • 2:52...well i don't know why but i think bill doesn't like Star Wars...

  • Mastodon is a mind-blowing band. Crack The Skye isn't softer, it's more organized. If you're someone that can understand music as well as appreciate it you'll understand that their musical strides in this new album sound more mature and tight. I love every fucking song and album they ever made, idolize Brann Dailor (the drummer) for his awesome playing skills and technical skills and - pretty much all of them i would have an orgy with, i dont care. Aniwaiz, MASTODON, DON'T STOP MAKING MUSIC EVER

  • everything brent said about crack the skye was true. truely amazing album. never gets old.

  • what song was he playing on the acoustic at 1:30

  • @NavySealRay That's the title track, Crack the skye.

  • Crack the Skye is definitely one of THE top 10 albums ever made

  • He thinks crack the skye is their 5th full length?

  • @godsizedhole It is. Their first record was Call of the mastodon, around 1999, I think.

  • @gauchofromhell I thought they considered that a demo though. Not a full length album. Oh well.

  • mastodon rocks, but did anyone else notice all the star wars merch?

  • Is his head tattoo feathers like an Indian, 'cause it looks badass, I just can't make it out.

  • Mastodon is Mastodon. they cant be put into one genre, they are just Mastodon. they could go all jazzy with one record and would still be Mastodon. it would be a Mastodon Jazz record.

  • You can say what you want about Mastodon getting softer, but Crack The Skye is one of the heaviest records I've ever heard.

  • @neroxtreme1380 they're only getting more melodic and they're really evolving musically, Love all their albums:)

  • @neroxtreme1380 They're still getting softer, though.

  • @neroxtreme1380 Then you've never heard Meshuggah.

  • @neroxtreme1380 ahahaha, heavy? sure.

  • @thychaos Brutal =/= heavy.

  • @neroxtreme1380 ok? do you think youre telling me something new? crack the skye isnt heavy.

  • @thychaos How is it not heavy? How is it anything but heavy? Just because it's not all breakdowns, pinch harmonics and inhales doesn't mean it's not heavy.

  • @neroxtreme1380 lol. you mistake me for a deathcore/metalcore kid, buddy. i hate breakdowns and i hate inhales. i guess it could be considered heavy, if you compare it to anything played on the radio. i dont really consider it heavy though. even blood mountain was heavy, but this is not.

  • @neroxtreme1380

In my opinion it was more dirty-sounding than it was heavy (not dirty in a good way, but in the awesome mastodon way). Remission, now that is a heavy album. I'm just missing the doomy riffs in Crack the Skye. I mean it's awesome but it's just a lot more spacey and a lot less heavy imo.

  • @Skjoldr16 I think it was more emotionally heavy for me. When it's over, it leaves you feeling like you've just been through all the stuff that the character goes through in the album. It's almost tiring to listen to, because the weight of the concepts and the emotion just pulls you down.

  • @neroxtreme1380

I guess that makes sense. Maybe i ought to listen to it more deeply. I mean, i am a huge mastodon fan, and music fan in general, but i've never really been the kind of person that listens to an album beginning to end. I just listen to a couple of songs, then get some favorites, and listen to them non stop. So that could be a reason why i didn't find Crack the Skye particularly heavy. Well at least we can agree on one thing : Mastodon is balls to the wall awesome!

  • 1:00 jajajajajaja Leonard!! The big bang theory!!

  • very cool

  • How obtuse. I appreciate your assistance in exposing your plight. It has been a great time. Again, it was a good try. It is understandable though, your being so woefully unarmed in this battle of wits. You should check your watch.....you seem to be "out to lunch" an awful lot.

  • Congratulations on elevating the discourse! The feeling is mutual. Although, it's difficult to say how sorry I feel for you, friend. It is a pitiable thing to see one so grieved by what must be a dismal existence that they feel they must project that onto others in order to gain a sense worth. It must be exhausting. It was a good try though. My advice to you....... A bit of self-effacement perhaps?

  • @dsmartts You idolize people. There is nothing more pathetic than that on this planet.

  • @icemanisdangerous Do tell, sir. I believe a recollection is in order. Your loss of direction is quite clear and indicative of your standing in this exchange. It is however, quite amusing....

  • @dsmartts Keep wanking over your mastodon posters you sad fan boy.

  • @icemanisdangerous it would seem as though you don't like mastodon. Why does one watch the videos of a band he dislikes? Are you a troll, or a leech of a human being?

  • @TheToadSaidGo HAHAHA why does one talk like a toffee nosed, plumbed mouth royal wannabe. Sad cunt.
