Had my first ever crush as a teenager on Toyah. Bought all her singles and albums with my pocket money. Just recently started buying all the albums on CD as well. She still looks and sounds great today.
Back in 1979/1980, some of my schoolmates thought that I'm crazy for loving Toyah-Songs. (TOYAH? She's just a screaming witch with no musical talent) Eventhough during the high time of Punk and New Wave, Toyah was ahead of her time!
Awesome. Yep, Toyah was as cool as Fuck. Much prefer the earlier stuff, like most others I should imagine. "It's a Mystery" is never played in the kissmychakram household.
I haven't read the article in question but it's possible that what she meant to say is that she's ashamed of her post-1980, more pop-focussed output, not her earlier and IMO vastly superior work.
She showed what a dystopian, punk-prog fusion could actually sound (and look) like - bridging a gap believed impossible in the late 70s and early 80s.
Was years ahead of her time. She could easily have been the female Bowie, had "Its A Mystery" and cheesy pop stardom not intervened.
She said that? Ignore what the Daily Mail say - only buy it if it's cheaper than the bog roll in the local pound shop - it's full of crap - I love this song and video - and the documentary - became a fan after seeing the documentary aged 12 - my mum still hates her for 'corrupting' me!
She was ahead of her time. Only my opinion, but after Anthem (& even in some parts of Anthem) she kind of went kitsch. During and after Anthem it became more like pantomime (compare "I Want to be Free" with "Bird in Flight", same sentiment, but one was lip service, the other was heartfelt poetry). She was a GREAT artist at a very young age.
wow, I have all her cds and vinyls, but I didnt see this before! its so great to see people know her as the pop star rather than the shadow she is now....
this song, vid & documentary had a huge impact on me when i first saw it.i have never forgotern it."the blue meaning" album has been etched into my soul forever.
The Changeling was a subsequently phenominal album - just as dark as Blue Meanings, but ecause by then a commercial album was expected it didn't receive half the praise it deserved. Angel & Me, The Packt, Run Wild Run Free... certainly not forgettable!
we allhave our imigary of the song and im sure TOYAH was restricted by her budget and video technology.
this song took me to the dereliction on Mars and the planted humans who struggled to survive on the atmosphere and worship a monolith..and it always will..Toyah was a vision for the receptive.
this video was made for the Toyah ATV documentary and is not a promo for the song... You can watch the full documentary which is around an hour long on here if u look and it as loads of older tracks..u will love it..
Has to be in the top five, does Toyah sing this in the tour going to IOM in Sept?

@kissmychakram I like just about everything she's done, actually. The Changeling is one of my favorites of hers.

Like all great pop.
Utter bollox, lyrically.
All presence.
Having worked in recording studios over the years. It's great how those dark little cells coax out such energy.
When Toyah was as cool as Fuck.
And that's exactly how we all said it.

No more, than brilliant! She is the thing, the issue, everything. Would love to see this video in full sound. Toyah IS THE BEST, ever.

And it doesn't get much better than that...this song is pure psychic genius and still turns me to jelly every time...
graemeduddridge 3 years ago 4
I also love this song..last track of side two?
An album you could listen to when albums were albums. However, I can never forgive Toyah for stating in a Daily Mail article that she
was more or less ashamed of her music career.
Maybe we are great for a mere moment?
and it all turns pear shaped when we break through to a mass audience and revert into
child like entertainment mode.

@lulabek Don't overlook The Changeling of 1982 as that is one serious album but yes, overall I agree with your sentiment.
