Boba Fett was also added in via CGI - in the ORIGINAL version where a human stood in for Jabba in lieu of a CGI Jabba, you never see Fett there at all. He was simply added in because he was a bounty hunter and it would be pretty awesome for the fans to see him there with all the others.
@overwask This scene was never made with a puppet, they did it with CGI at first, and later improved on it. But i absolutely agree, physical effects are way more effective than CGI.
Just imagine you're the poor actor who gets the news that your only scene in the most famous movie of all time was not only cut, but twenty years later, you're digitally replaced by a morbidly obese, disgusting, sloppy slug monster... that Han calls a human being.
I would assume those of you who said this is terrible can do better or obviously dont know shit about CGI. True that Lucas has shit load of money to make this look good, but CGI usually look better when you shot it specifically for the effect, and you have to keep in mind that this was already shot back in 70's and they got to work with what they have so of course it will not be perfect or natural looking.
@Pooternackle5 Yeah. If Lucas insist on changeing things he should try and make that thing look at least somewhat realistic, and stop worrying about whether Ewok's blink.
still looks like shit...maybe in 5 or 6 more attempts and edited releases, George Lucas will decide the original human Jabba was best and re-edit Return of the Jedi...then his transformation will be complete! lol
The 2004 Jabba is more photo realistic than the 97 version, but somehow the walking over the tail bit now seems to look even more fake than it did before.
@jango67 NO!!! NO!!! I do not want to watch any SW movies that come before Episode I!!! The Old Universe stories(if they are about old knights and the Sith Empire) are BAD!! I can watch it if it comes after VI, though. Or something like Jedi Knight and Force Unleashed.
God, these revisions just get worse and worse. Even the background plate of the Falcon in the docking bay looks crap now. Looks like a painting, because of all the overdone digital itching, tweaking, and eternal pissing about that's been done to it. The Jabba is as fake and cartoony as the last one, while Han jerking around like a Gilliam cut-out animation as he steps on the tail is also worse than ever.
God, and they had to have Boba Fett throw a glance at the camera, just to get more Boba-time for the Boba-fans! Like others I doubt that GL ever meant for this to be anything but the original human actor.
If they'd "planned" back in 1977 to add an effect, it doesn't seem logical they would've shot the scene that way, esp. with Han walking behind him. It was hard enough to make the CGI look good, imagine inserting a stop-motion or whatever in '77!
Doesn't seem to fit with what we know of Jabba. Would he ever go personally to find Solo? Would he be so submissive in dealing with him? He's one of the most powerful crime lords, and hutts look down upon all other species. This scene smells like BS.
@northroad1 Normally he'd probably toast the guy right there, but he knows Solo is an accomplished smuggler (therefore moneymaker), so he's going to give Solo another chance. Not to mention Han's ship is always nice to have, especially when the guy who knows how to fly it is indeed alive.
Okay, I have the first slug version of Jabba and he's funnier. Chewie has a mysterious twin brother working for Jabba(there seems to be 2 Chewbaccas) and I wish they would have kept Jabba's scottish voice.
Han calling Jabba a "wonderful human being" to his face would be a priceless line if everything else about this scene weren't so awful. Even Chewie walking into the landing bay at 0:40 has continuity problems. Heck, even the Jabba from the Clone Wars TV show looks and acts better than this one!
I hope they actually make this scene halfway watchable If they decide to include it on the upcoming blu ray set. The animation on Jabba's mouth movements and Han's stepping on the tail look horrible. Plus, this doesn't even look much like Jabba from Return of the Jedi.
Originally, Jabba the Hutt was intended to be in the movie, but at the time the effect of adding Jabba in over the actor wasn't acceptable. By 1997, the effect still wasn't acceptable, but George Lucas said "Fuck it, we'll do it anyway!" so they did it anyway.
@foodlovingpig Hell, it would have looked better if he'd used claymation in 1977 and left it that way in 1997. The CGI sucks, even by 1990's standards.
i know that is the official story, but i don't buy it. everything points that this scene just didn't work and so went with the Greedo scene instead. notice that both scenes basically have the same lines.
oh i love this scene as a deleted scene but its cut for a reason, i also don't buy the hole ''replace the actor'' thing, why would that actor have a costume if we were never meant to see him? simple he was the original Jabba the Hutt.
can't find that painting you speak off. but in the original script Jabba is said to look like a slug, however Lucas has also said Jabba was more hairy and wookie like, this would explain the outfit the actor is wearing. and adds this scene was cut for time and budget problems, but also because it doesn't add to the plot, i agree.
so Lucas may have had a Jabba in mind for stop motion, but it seems like a completely different concept, a hairy slug creature and likely more humanoid.
Why couldn't they have made it so while Solo walks behind Jabba, he briefly pauses, and then continues in a way so it give the illusion he's stepping OVER Jabba's tail? This is just awful.
Just a question ...who is in this scene..apart from Hans and Jabba..who are the henchmen ? and who does Hans have apart from Chewwy and the falcon for backup ??
@spiritofradio looks more like three questions. in order: in this scene is chewbacca, boba fett, two of greedo's species and some other bounty hunters; the henchmen are bounty hunters who work for jabba; and no other backup.

@etheangel2220 I mean did they not even look at the reference from the old 83 movie or what? I figured this was their second time around, scrapping the first jabba cg model from the special edition. i thought they would have got it right
That's from the original version when Jabba was still a fat man. You can look up "original jabba scene" here on YT. Of course in both versions these words are pure sarcasm but they do seem sorta out of place in this re-edited version.
Of course it is, but used by Han Solo in this context it is pure sarcasm either way and using this expression for a red-eyed shitsnake from outer space is even more absurd, isn't it? Of fourse this adds to the comic element of the scene. Anyway: I'm just pretty sure that they wouldn't have had the idea to use this expression if Jabba had been some kind of disgusting spacemonster in the first place.
I liked that scene cause it was a missing part of the story.. but they should of used the ROTJ Jabba and put in Boba Fett's insignia on his left shoulder
Not to mention it made no fucking sense. Jabba killed his dancer for not putting out, don't you think he would have had his goons curb-stomp Han for that kind of thing?
@zanzalot Not too mention totally out of character. Not even Bib Fortuna would be stupid enough to step on Jabba's tail. Jabba would've had Han shot right there on the spot.
@allanstevenson750 Yes. This is a good point. Still, I'd expect Jabba to at least order one of his thugs to shoot Han's pinky off, or even just give him a firm back-handed slap across the face.
@zanzalot It's much improved over the 1997 version but still not great. There must be a way for Ford to walk between the CGI character without needing to step on the tail. Also, the 'wonderful human being' line clearly is a bit weird since they replaced the original actor with a Hutt. Some people take it as some sarcasm from Han but I'm not so sure. Rest assured they'll take another pass at this For Episode IV 3D in 2015.
anybody wonder why Han calls, Jabba, "a wonderful human being." Jabba's not a human, maybe it's sarcasm but I always find that a little funny. Maybe Harrison said that because the actor standing in for Jabba was a human being :P

Jabba...You're a wonderful human being?
DRMARIOX 1 year ago
@DRMARIOX
That's from the original version when Jabba was still a fat man. You can look up "original jabba scene" here on YT. Of course in both versions these words are pure sarcasm but they do seem sorta out of place in this re-edited version.
fotakatos 1 year ago
@fotakatos I've heard that being called a human being is a compliment.
therealfavs 1 year ago
@therealfavs

This was very well done! Nice work Lucas. Now the begining of RITJ doesn't feel like complete filler.

Han stepping on Jabba looks so horribly done.

@zanzalot
Not to mention it made no fucking sense. Jabba killed his dancer for not putting out, don't you think he would have had his goons curb-stomp Han for that kind of thing?
CountvonAge 1 year ago
@zanzalot Not too mention totally out of character. Not even Bib Fortuna would be stupid enough to step on Jabba's tail. Jabba would've had Han shot right there on the spot.
coldlampin 1 year ago
@coldlampin the only reason jabba didn't have han shot was cos he could'nt get his money if he was dead.
allanstevenson750 10 months ago
@allanstevenson750 Yes. This is a good point. Still, I'd expect Jabba to at least order one of his thugs to shoot Han's pinky off, or even just give him a firm back-handed slap across the face.
coldlampin 10 months ago
@zanzalot yeah that's a real shame they couldn't get it well... :S

@hackensac What do you mean? Isn't it obvious? Han looks like a cardboard cutout moving over Jabba.

@zanzalot i can only see like a second of what is described but i did see him freeze when he stepped on him

@zanzalot Everything about this scene looks so horribly done.

aquelescaraaaaaaaaaa 1 year ago
@aquelescaraaaaaaaaaa It looks like Han's a cardboard cutout is being lifted over Jabba's tail.
zanzalot 1 year ago
@zanzalot It's not great but compare it to the 1997 version. They've toned it down a bit at least.
arabiansanchez 1 year ago
@zanzalot I've never understood why jabba just puts up with that.
darkhelmet2009 7 months ago
@zanzalot Yh but, I bet you didn't notice until it was pointed out, right?
TalcumWatermill 7 months ago
@zanzalot It's much improved over the 1997 version but still not great. There must be a way for Ford to walk between the CGI character without needing to step on the tail. Also, the 'wonderful human being' line clearly is a bit weird since they replaced the original actor with a Hutt. Some people take it as some sarcasm from Han but I'm not so sure. Rest assured they'll take another pass at this For Episode IV 3D in 2015.

anybody wonder why Han calls, Jabba, "a wonderful human being." Jabba's not a human, maybe it's sarcasm but I always find that a little funny. Maybe Harrison said that because the actor standing in for Jabba was a human being :P
hpc01 1 year ago
@hpc01 He says that because Jabba was SUPPOSED to be human. Irish, too.
