Might be hard for you to believe but Les Paul did this with the Les Paulverizer a long time before Mike Campbell. However its not the tech but the creative use of the tech.
Mike Campbell = most under-rated guitarist ever!!! p.s.- the Aug 27th (2010) show @ SPAC (Saratoga,NY) was a blast - was great to see the guys again!!!
My parents took me to see the Into the Great Wide Open Tour 3 times, I was 7 years old. Mike Campbell was and is the most amazing guitar player i've ever seen. I'm now a studio guitarist, and a professional luthier. I owe it all to Mike Campbell, for a child to see grown people watch this man with the reverence of a holy figure was nothing short of spectacular. Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers will always be in my opinion the greatest live straight ahead rock and roll band of all time.
to the comment below me eddie can play alot more then u think i mean im not a fan of eddie i was always on hendrix side wen it came to best guitarist. but eddie does have some new stuff out classical blues and new age rock i would defitnly wona be able play twice as better then him then half of wut this guy is doin
Mikey can play it all...blues, country, rockabilly, metal, classical, funk, etc. A fretboard master! One of rocks premier guitarist who doesn't seem to get the credit due. I'd rather be able to play half of what Mike plays than twice of what Van Halen can play!
It's hard to say how much of Tom Petty's success has been directly attributed to by Mike Campbell but He has been with him for the entire journey so I'm thinking Mike has a LOT to do with it.
@guitardds Oh my, it appears I have gotten Mike and Jeff confused. I thought Mike had the beard. How did I do that, Oh I know. Some of the videos identified them differently. My bad. Sorry Mike.
This is from a concert film entitled Take the Highway. Taken from their tour for Into the Great Wide Open, it was released sometime in 1992, and I've unfortunately yet to see it on DVD. I do have it on VHS, and it's a HELL of a concert! (The version of "Too Good to Be True" is especially righteous.)
