@TheXXXDB Your thinking of someone else . Don just recieved a lifetime achievement award From BBC. Full uk tour coming up in October 2012. Including the Royal Albert Hall.
music in his voice, i started listening to him when i was 17, i used to take the cds from my dad and listen to them in private because i was embarassed of what other people my age would think, that was 11 years ago, other music and artists come and go in my life, Don Mclean will never leave me, i requested crossroads for my fathers funeral mass 7years ago, emotional stuff
I loved how the announcer introduced him by saying something like Killing us softly with his songs. The very popular song by Roberta Flack "Killing Me Softly" was written by Gimbel & Fox based on a poem written by Lori Lieberman after hearing Don McLean sing in LA. Lieberman released the song and then Flack immediately released the cover version.
I love his live performances. His studio recordings are wonderful, but they can't beat hearing and watching him perform live, then and now. And even though I normally don't like it when singers change the way they sing their muchloved songs at concerts, I don't mind it so much when Don does it like in this video. His songs are so beautiful that no matter how he sings them they stay beautiful. And his guitar playing is truly excellent.
Empty chairs is the most beautiful song about his mother his REAL mother our little Mary(quite contrary) and although I've been listening to it for 40 years I never tire of it. The guitar is a Martin 000-28 made in 1929. The 000-28VS is a modern recreation of this stunning and valuable vintage instrument. He still has it but doesnt play it now.
I love this clip, a beautiful short medley, he's such a natural, unpretentious great talent. I mentioned at work today that when I saw Don McLean perform at a local theatre in Newcastle Australia in 1975 it was the best show I had ever seen. The young ones laughed. But it still is.
@pitchphoenix Couldn't agree more. I saw Don on his very first tour to Australia in 1973, and it is still the best show I have ever seen, bar none. At his best no one can touch him as a performer, and singer/songwriter.
@yadzx I agree. He should be recognized more. I love that he can write, pretty much, about anything... love, family, other artists, religion, politics, war, the environment, etc... and make it all sound so good.
'If We Try" is the very first song of his that I heard when I was about 12 and had my first crush. It became, sort of, my 'theme song'. ;)
@pisswig I do not know, but, then again, I've been a Don McLean fanatic for about 35 years! It's very easy for me to like ANYTHING D-Mac sings and/or plays.

@lesjohn2 Do you mean Don's REAL mother? Was he adopted? Anyway, I think Birthday Song is the one he wrote for his mother.

Homelessbrother, you must have a vault full of recordings. Thanks for posting this one. Is there a whole concert recorded at this venue?

i agree with you! i'm born during the late 80's but i prefer Don McLean's music and the like than most songs being played today! simply, love it!

Obviously the singing is great, but his guitar playing is terrific.
