  • These video series are very good. I really like this trainer. She gets down to the point showing the viewers how the movement is performed without bs'ing too much like some others.

    She also has fabulous legs.

    On a side note ... I totally agree with the last comment. I have a video on youtube that goes against the traditional stereotype of the "objectified woman nude".

    It got hardly any comment because viewers just don't know what t make of it.

  • As far as spotting you on the leg press, if you load it up completely, its impossible. If you dont load it up completely, you can just press your hands on your knees when you need help. Either way, a spotter for a leg press seems kind of silly.

  • 1) Thanks. I cant figure out how to use a leg press on my own. I mean its so complicated - you sit down and push the platform up with your feet. I TOTALLY needed a video to explain that.

    2) There is almost never a time to use leg press if you can do squats and deadlifts.

    3) Its not only unnecessary, but also impossible for someone to spot you on this exercise.

  • A leg press takes you through a fixed range of motion. All exercises that do this lead to incorrect development. There's a reason why someone can leg press 1,000 pounds but cant squat 90 pounds. If you are physically capable of doing squats or deadlifts, there is almost never a time when you should do leg presses. There simply are no advantages.

  • If by "incorrect development" you mean not developing stabilizer muscles proportionately then squats and deadlifts are just as guilty, as is *any* single exercise. Freeweight or not.

  • I don't think I'd feel very balanced doing lunges with weight on my sholders. Maybe you get used to it in time. I mostly squat. I have my own rack at home.

  • Its better to do squats. Lunches are not superior to squats in any way whatsoever, but when someone says that, and earlier says "squats and deadlifts dont develop stabilizers, no exercise does" - its really not worth arguing further. Its like arguing that the sky is purple.

    But do stick to your squats.

  • If not stabilizers, you do develope something in your brain to control your muscles better. I think I will stick with the squats anyway.  I don't want to get off balance--that's a great way to hurt your back.

  • The thing you develop in your brain to do lunges better is called "coordination".

    Lets say you walk a balance beam and fall off. Why is that? Was it your stabilizers, or the fact that you've never walked a balance beam? If you walk it over and over, your stabilizers will not develop - but your coordination will. This is what develops at the bottom of a lunge movement. And you should stick to squats.

  • Now children, follow along and try to keep up. I didn't say they don't develop stabilizers, I said they don't develop proportionately. If the only leg exercise you do is a squat or a deadlift then yes, your sky is purple. and I guess if you get deeper into lifting (not talking stats, talking about knowledge) then you'll understand why lunges (not "lunches") work the legs more completely than squats.

Everything we know about biology and kinesiology states this. Volumes of research by Dr Hatfield, Dr Verkoshansky, and others have all confirmed this. Squats do develop proportionately.

  • wow, only took 8 hours for that response, cuz I *know* you had Hatfield and Verkoshansky on the top of your head. The reality is that you get a better extension and RoM with the lunge. True or False? A better range of motion leads to more muscle fibers being recruited. A more complete leg exercise.

    The bottom of a squat is comparable in ROM to a lunge.
