I think this video was excellent, he took his time and explained every thing very well. This was the easiest and the best video on transferring cassette's I came across. Thanks Dave.
Dave, I purchased the Grace Digital Audio Tape2USB Device with the Audacity Software. It took me over an hour to figure it all out. I finally got everything to work fine, however when I play the recording I made from the cassette it picks up all the background noise, like the tv, me breathing, the phone ringing, anything and the recording is too loud....Do you have any suggestions?
to get better audio quality its best to get a analog / digital audio imput box such as an m box or EU box that can be hooked up to your usb. btw this process works on early versons of windows 98 95 even but to avoid crashing on early systems you need to have a usb converter or disable the "play track while recording it" opton on audacity
i got this hooked up just like you do.. program audacity and everthing u did.. but i cant hear my tape play thru my laptop speakers it records it then i can hear it after. BUT i cant hear it while its recording just like your video here, yes i got the dual jacks and one is in headphone jack in tape deck and outher on mic on laptop.
@xdman09x under the prefrences menue in audacity they'll be an option that says "play track while recording it" you have to make sure thats selected to hear it back while you're recording it :)
question.. if one of the speakers on the laptop i'm sending the audio to isn't working, can i still transfer the audio from the boombox correctly to the laptop? i'm not sure exactly what's wrong with the speaker, all i know is that one speaker is working on my laptop.. hopefully there's no issue with my sound card. thanks so much.
just a little tip, plugging the cord into the microphone jack can damage your sound card in you pc/mac. So i suggest plugging it into your "line in" slot
Why would You export it as a WAV instead of an MP3 format. I know the WAV is more defined in the audio aspect. But it is way to big. Just a question, should I consider using the WAV, is their a reason you exported it that way?
Well, the sound quality on cassettes isn't nearly as good as modern-day formats like MP3 or CDs. Using a sub-standard file format that compresses the file on a medium already plagued with sound issues is only going to make it worse to listen to. It's like making a bad photocopy of a bad photocopy. You lose a bit of detail each time.
i've been using audacity for some time, but now the MIC socket on my pc is faulty - lots of noise in the signal - so, is it possible to use the USB as a LINE IN for audio ? would i need a driver to get the pc to recognize the USB socket as a LINE IN ? i thought it would be cheaper than getting the MIC socket repaired, you see...
hi i have plugged in the headphone jack from my walkman to the pc however when i try to record i am getting an error message that reads check input device settings and the project sample rate. What does this mean ? any help would be great i am trying to put our kids play music onto cd.
Thank you so much for this. This worked beautifully and at 55 yrs old I'm no techno wizard. I did notice however, that if you keep the volume down to about 1/4 of its capacity on the cassette player, the sound is great with no distortion as it transfers to your computer.
Help! I have a standard boombox w/both cd and cassette player. I don't see a headphone jack but I do see a 'Aux In' is that the same thing? Also, if I can't use it, then can I plug the jack from the microphone of my computer to the headset in a regular cassette walkman? I can't find the mic. on my Gateway either.
I get a wave form when recording, but cannot hear it as it records. When I try to play-back I get a message saying "error opening sound device. Check output device settings and the project sample rate". Can't do any of that - don't know what it means! HELP!!
then choose what speakers you have on your p c for playback while you are recording click pause on audacity window to listen to your next song without recording it
how do I make to where I can hear the song playing as when it is recording? i can't hear the sound so I don't know when to stop recording. Is there a way to do that or not?
BTW the instructions are very easy, I tried it but like I said, I'm not hearing the song play as it records.
I wanted to thank you for a great video. I found yesterday some old cassettes that i would like to transfer to cd, this helps alot. Is it possible to tell me what cable to buy? That's the only thing i don't know. Thanks
I wan to thank you for posting this, I'm in the process of making a home studio - running mixer through stereo instead of computer-- was racking my brain looking for external device to convert- this was a true stress saver-lol thanks dude

Aux Jack will not work. I think you're out of luck. You need a boombox with headphone jack.
