Seriously i think Space Marines (any chapter including Blood Angels and Space Wolves) and Grey Knights. Space Mariens are very forgiving in play and you didn't need that much models equally Grey Knights but need less than the all other armies. Necrons come diretcly after Space marines.
@hello333able well both are pretty solid armies. Necrons AND tyranids both just got some new models and rules...so that is still a tough choice. Necrons are tough. Pretty much marine stats minus the initiative aspect...and I believe you can make the unit size 10+ (so 20 strong or so) same with nids. Nids are more of a horde army with elite stuff mixed in there...so lots of cannon fodder with nasty bugs. I like the nids model wise as they have come a LOOOOONG way modeling them.
@hello333able its really tough to ask a question like that especially when both got new rules and new models which means new tactics. Bigger wallet go for nids...smaller wallet go for necrons. LOL
@theclash24 yeah thanks for the tip it looks like im gonna have to go for the necrons cause i cant keep buying and buying tyranids well now that just leaves me with necrons against orcs
Best starter army would be the Space Marines, but for more advanced army, I gotta go with the Eldar. :) Just have to know how to play them. Necrons are pretty cool as well, I would say pick the army that you think looks cool to you and paint those guys up. I hate playing folks that just prime them.
@BlankoPie Death company are overrated, their a mediocre CC unit at best, if they got charged by khorne beserkers or bloodletters they would drop like flies.
At the moment, Space Wolves are the best for smashing other players with. Necrons got their new codex recently and it's quite tastey. Rumour has it that Chaos will be getting a new codex mid 2012 that will make all Chaos players feel like their underwear is shrinking..
@theclash24 Grey Knights don't fair very well against Space Wolves. Grey Knights are too out numbered and they don't get to play up to any of their strengths against Space Wolves. GK tend to never have a balanced list due to the cost of their units which forces them to be very careful as if they get shot up early, they run out of steam very fast where other armies are meant to take losses where as GK rely on superior armor and not taking loses. Both are strong though.
@maverickcorlas vanilla marines are probably the worse out of all space marines as they have no good special rules. But again...its preference and how you play.
If you want to start out winning, buy space marines. If you like tanks, play imperial guard. I started out playing eldar and they are the hardest army to use. Dark eldar will be good for fast players. It all depends on if you want to play competitivly or want achallenge and play for fun.
@Davetacular45 it will be rather expensive. GW is expensive period. They rise their prices instead of making them realistic especially for this economy. eitherway, IG will have a good mechanized army list, lots of tanks and lots of pew pew. Another good list is Valkyrie Spam with heavy support with elite coming from valks with meltas, plasma guns and flamethrowers.
@theclash24 Yeah I'm aware of the expensiveness of collecting IG as well as GW products in general, it might be dumb of me since I'm a little strapped from cash these days. Fortunately it does seem like I can save $30-50 on a battleforce if I get it through amazon or another 3rd party as opposed to buying it from one of their stores. I do like the pew pew and heavy mechanized, as well as the idea of sending waves of everymans to fight against horrible space monsters.
i just began playing this with some friends, ironically we chose eldar, orks and space marines, i picked eldar, the rules and back story are so interesting, i didnt really pick em for their looks ( they look like sex toys) their rules are just so creative, if ur a young player go for whatever looks cooler for you, that way is just fun builduing and paintin em, if ur a more mature player read some of the rules and tactics and then go for the looks
@TVFearless LOL naw, my army rosters dont win all the time. My VC's lose a lot. My Blood Angels usually tie or win more than lose. My orks lose all the time.

i collect eldar atm but im thinking of starting either a necron or grey knights army around Christmas. the simple answer for the question is: There isnt a single best army. the armies have rules and requirements that make them fair. Eldar could defeat Marines but Marines can also slaughter Eldar. the possibilities are endless. so, 14 year olds. choose the army that you think looks cool.
@VeryCupboardy the reality of it is...the newest codex usually owns older codex...dark eldar or grey knights will kick most people's butts due to new and different rules that hose older codex that have no such special rules or counters.
@whyDraw old comment . Didnt know much about 40k back then . Now i do and thus i am removing this comment .I really had no idea about what i was talking about.
I'll be happy when they bring the points cost of carnifexes down again. I admit they were haxx in 4th ed when you could get an enhanced senses dakkafex for 115 points, but the points cost on them these days have seen them all but extinct except for apoc games when there isn't really a limit on how many HS choices you can take.
@theseventhson95 every army has strengths and weaknesses...or else everyone would play 1 army and GW would crash and burn. I've seen Orks steam roll anything they touch...and I've seen other armies do the same...I dont ever go to a table going oh this is cake, its X army. Doing that means your underestimating your opponent and will be stressed if you start losing because of it.
@FellBlade9 THIS is true, but sadly...these days, its usually the newest codex as their rules trump any older codex and crushes things like flies with its cheese. It was spacewolves, than it was blood angels and now its dark elder...and it will be whatever is next-- its another ploy by GW to make you buy whats best.
@theclash24 I disagree with this, slightly. Though normally it is the new codex, the new Dark Eldar codex I find to be fairly balanced. Their armor 10 transports die fairly often to bolter fire, and most armies *rely* on these transports to be effective.
Generic marines suck but Blood Angels are fucking amazing. Get a shitload of Death Company and they'll tear anything apart without taking too many casualties.
@narceron I don't have chaos and I was just panning but funny. Yeah a landraider is cool too. I think most tanks from the imperium make better battlewagons because you convert them orky style instead of actually buying the ORK battlewagon which doesn't look like it belonged to any army.
@narceron well thats ork..its either slammed full of metal plating or rickity as hell like the trukks. I like the leman Russ because its small enough to get through tight spaces and big enough to confer cover saves. I've played games where it was almost like city fight so placing tanks was really hard especially to get LoS etc.
dude youre battlewaggon is amazing... I use my leman russ as a looted tank with boomgun though. I would say land raider is more battlewaggon size. Looks fantastic though.
@Skimmary I explain why i made it that size, I dont remember what video...but I think I made it because it used to be the main body for battlewagons and tanks for orks a long time ago...so I went old school and they still look really cool. Because they resemble a leman russ you can picture it looted down to the nuts and bolts. The size is that way so you can wedge into nice little 4+ cover saves much easier than that ugly battlewagon kit they have.
the best are 4 different armies. vulkan melta spam, chaos divine lash, chaos plague spam, and vendetta spam. those 4 are definetly the most competetive, while others can still work out well.
First time any ork mob charges they'll get as good as Space marines (with their special rule Furious Charge which grants them 1+ strenght, +1 initiative) but they have 4 attacks each!! Can you imagine just if 10 orks can fight? :P that 40 dices with WS 4 Strenght 4. ^^
I've played as Orkz....its nasty. Plus 1 of them will always have a Power Klaw which is the Nob...Nob is base 3 Attacks...+1 charge...those are strength 10 attacks on the charge, 4 of them, slaughtering pretty much anything it touches.
@theclash24 once i had a warboss take out 10 khorne beserkers, a chaos lord, and a necron lord and with only 1 arm!! lol love orks but i like most armies
Agreed, 100%. I would like to add that players who are new to the hobby with aspirations to become competitive should begin with Space Marines because they are very easy to use and very difficult to master. In my opinion, a balanced Marine list is a perfect training army.
indeed. they dont have to many fancy rules and most of their stats apply all around to all their troops with maybe a leadership or attack or initiative change.
