  • One of the best anime OPs ever!

  • Personally, I prefer the 80s OVA series to this. But this isn't bad. I just don't find it to be as engaging as the original.

  • this anime isint too popular but it has a damn good foundation and pretty graphics. ovas are still on my to watch list

  • They should of made a full-length movie out of this anime. . .I'd drop $20 for it easily. . .

  • @BlueFox284 Hell yeah... XD

  • I just got the DVD collection today. And after one play of the opening, I was hooked on this song, it was absolutely awesome!

  • Cg is a common thing nowadays... get used to it.... and on top of that, ignore the CG and try and put yourself in an Aircraft cockpit in those situations... TENSON IS HIGH!

  • would u mind tell me the opening song name?

  • Angels - Mission(Fuga)

  • Bach - Little Fugue in g minor. I was very surprised to hear this tune in an anime!

  • @Sarajeva - The music is based on Bach's Fugue in G minor BWV 578 (sometimes called "Little Fugue").

  • Game to cartoon wasn't the exact order.

1979 the comic started in japan.

1985 the OVA anime was released in japan.

1990 the Commodore 64 game was released in japan and the US.

1991 the SNES game was released in japan and the US.

1992 the OVAs from 1985 were released in the US.

2004 the remake shown here was released in japan with the US getting it in 2005.

So it's more like, hurrah for 25th anniversaries!

  • Oh..OK I just thought it was Nintendo game cuz I remember it from back in da day!

  • Regardless, Area 88 ftw!

  • damn straight.

  • yup

  • You've made two mistakes in your timeline. Firstly, you left out:-

1989 the original Area 88 coin-op was released by Capcom in Japan and in US/Europe (as UN Squadron).

Secondly, the Commodore 64 game may have been released in Europe and the US, but it probably didn't see the light of day in Japan due to the C64 being a total flop over there.

  • You forgot about the arcade game in 1989.

  • the anime came out first in 1985, and the arcade in 1989, the one that was shown was the re-made series in 2004, but the overall best is the snes version of area 88 called UN Squadron.......still would chose that over any next gen game anytime.

  • @cherrydropomg Don't forget; the first two episodes of the original OVA were in 1985. The third episode "Burning Mirage" came out in 1986. Same year Top Gun was out.

  • We had to play this fugue in school... XD

  • Man remember the game :)

So freakin hard.. loved this one:)

  • omfg i miss this show

  • man i love the opening but i wish they made a longversion of the openin will be coll.^_^

  • Same here. You can find it on Veoh, its like youtube but things take FOREVER to get deleted XD

  • Hmm all the credits are in English ,l'll say this is'nt a fansub but a pirated rip from the official release from ADV

  • I love the beginning! THNX :D

  • does anyone know where i can watch this anime online? i only saw a few episodes on tv

  • it has a official release from ADV. support the industry and by that.
