its amazing he had the willpower to take time away from his drinking (heavy drinking [see: Oirish Drinking in Encyclopedia Alcoholica]) to do a vid like this...cheers
@hamelkarl apologies. i usually mention specifics. I think I assumed my regular viewers knew my specs... in the video featured im using my old PC. 1Gb of RAM and 1.73Ghz Intel Celeron.
@TheKlisa Regular Ubuntu uses a different "desktop environment" called Unity. Unity was new with Ubuntu 11.04 Natty Narwhal and was buggy. 11.10 is much more stable but is still very resource heavy compared to previous Ubuntu releases = slower.
Xubuntu uses a much lighter desktop and lighter programs installed by default.
Both use the Ubuntu software centre to install reliable optional software for free.
This isn't XFCE. Its a bloated XFCE port filled with GNOME crap. You want XFCE, get Debian and net-install it. 170MB memory used on boot with 4GB of RAM, not this porky OS.
@WIN545 Default XFCE is horrible, light on resources and snappy, sure, but ugly. I've used it with Arch and Debian (and temporarily on Gentoo). On Arch usually I just stick with Openbox or LXDE, but yeah, default XFCE was never good. At least Xubuntu makes XFCE look nice.
@WIN545 Well I did have a Mac. I don't "need" pretty, it's just prettiness is hardly a bad thing is it? I just don't really see how Xubuntu's XFCE is worse than the default XFCE, it's just as customisable, and unless you're running the worst computer in the world, it's just as fast. So... how is Xubuntu's XFCE worse? Bloated how, exactly?
@WIN545 i've never seen a computer even slightly lag on it. It's MORE bloated than "pure" XFCE, yes, but I'd still hardly call it objectively "bloated". Compare it to KDE, or GNOME 3, or even a typical Windows install, it's nowhere near any of those.
To be honest I like xubuntu its was alright on 11.04 but 11.10 just well is not the best i got left hanging on the xubuntu login screen. There are not a whole bunch of new features that make xubuntu faster then its parent ubuntu.
Seems like a good alternative for those who don't like Unity and Gnome 3. I made the mistake of running the upgrade from Xubuntu 11.04 and it took 5 hours to complete. Would have been smarter to run a fresh install. Also, I can't get compiz fusion to work anymore. So far I am not excited about any of the 11.10 releases....
@draoi99 My 2 computers where I usually do all the Linux work seemed to run very sluggish every time I installed anything with a newer KDE version (with the exception of PClinuxOS), so I am a little reluctant with KDE unless it is a newer more powerful computer.
I would be very interested in hearing your thoughts on Xubuntu vs Lubuntu. Those two distros seem (to me) to be competing for the small footprint market. I have a low-power Fitpc2 running Lubuntu 11.04 right now, and I'm wondering if I should try Xubuntu 11.10 or Lubuntu 11.10.

This is NOT a review. You just show the menus, etc. That's fine, and might be useful to some people, but it's not a review.

saying how much resources it use on your system in percentage doesn't tell us anything if you don't tell us your hardware.

I don't know why the Gnome libraries are included in Xubuntu. Maybe so it could easily run gnome applications?

I like averything about it, but I can't turn wifi on. Its kinda switches off instantly by it self.

@Armantas19 Could be a compatibility issue with your laptop's wifi. I had the same problem with my netbook.
ItchyHippo 2 months ago
@Armantas19 you have to find adittional drivers/hardware drivers and install your wifi drivrers but i think you will need a cable connection :)

Horrible how? You want pretty, then use Apple. XFCE is a tool. Not a mirror.

Xubuntu has been a great OS for quite some time. It is very underrated.

I really think xubuntu should include pavucontrol by default and link it to the mixer applet click by default, but I guess it's a size issue.

To look at memory and CPU usage, it's handy to just apt-get install htop and then run htop in a terminal. Gives you a quick simple overview.
