I know what Swedish holiday you are talking about. There's a may flower pole with ribbons around a pole that is done where I live. I love the horse and want one. I studied Sweden a long time ago so I will have to head over.
I USA svär man trohetseden i skolan varje dag.
Thanks for this interesting vid (again). I saw many references to the midsummer day, I just thought it was the old celebration about the summer solstice, I just didn't know it was Sweden national day. The Swedish community is not very present in my country (too bad). I have to check what is the meaning of the national anthem, it's always revealing about the values that it defends.
Hej Nick, You should come to Seattle for Midsommar. WE have a big Scandinavian community because of immigration for the logging and fishing industries. We have a huge Midsommarfest near Lake Washington with a very large sommarstang. We bring picnics and have the traditional dances and everything. Come and visit for Midsommar 2008!
P.S. I REALLY like Carola's version of "Du Gamla" too!
you said it was pagan based I believe...sounds kind of Druid based, with the earth, food, flowers, etc...alot of similarities. Though I guess Druid is pagan...hmm?
Abs4260 - I don't know if the Druids were ever in the area of Scandinavia. I'm not really sure. I know that a lot of Scandinavian tradation has moved to the UK and Ireland due to the Viking influence, but I don't really know!
I'm sorry, never meant to do that(and imo i didn't do that) but i guess you could make comparisson to all the blurry old relgion that was forced out of existance by the Church mostly beouse they were blurry and mostly had with sex to do
alledal - yes, that's exactly what I sang! Of course I was alone and I had no maypole so it wasn't very fun... But you have to sing "Små Grodorna" on Midsommar!
as an englishman in sweden i have to admit i refused to dance round the maypole singing about frogs - my friends told me it means - Little frogs are funny to look at, They don't have ears or tails - Is that really true?
it was when i was at school, they brought us cloud berries aswell...very nice! then when i went to stockholm like 2 yrs ago i had them again at some really nice resturant called freds garten. yummy stuff!
You really get a sense from listening to this version of the national anthem that Swedish has a very large inventory of vowels, making it exceptionally difficult for non-native speakers to pronounce and spell properly. Still, in the verses she sang, I didn't hear the "sje" sound that is supposed to be one of the hardest to pronounce in ANY language.
dkatzism - Actually there is one in the second line of the song... it's a "sk" but that's the same sound as the "sj"... Swedish definitely is a challenging language to pronounce correctly.
What a fun video. I love hearing about different cultures. I am going to build you a maypole so you can dance. You would look hot with one of those crowns I think. It is a very pretty national anthem.
Severige rocks;) So close but I've never been there. My friends love it so I should go and check it out. Cool vid and I will miss them. (So don't post too many :P)

Är Svenskar i allmänhet patriotiska eller.
Känner själv mycket stolthet över att vara svensk.

It has nothing to do with the druids
rafen8705 4 years ago
I said it sounded kind of like druid...similar beliefs and practices...I never said it was druid.
I was making a comparison based on similarities, don't bite my head off, jeez!

alledal - yes, it's really true! That's what the song's about. And it's very accurate! They don't have ears or tails!
"Små grodorna, små grodorna
är lustiga att se.
Ej öron, ej öron,
ej svansar hava de!
Ko-ack-ack-a, ko-ack-ack-a,
Ko-ack-ack-ack-ack-a!"

Ancient pagan rituals surrounding a giant phallic symbol sound fun, especially when there's a lot of alcohol involved. :P
I had a good friend from Sweden, and he's always left me with a great impression of the Swedish as a people. :)
