They do have a few MiG-23's and 29's, but these are not going to make a whole lot of difference vs. bigger players like South Korea, Japan, and the US. Keeping old MiGs may actually make a lot of sense for NK, instead of purchasing new warplanes. NK has fuel and spare parts shortages in the first place, so it is not going to be of much help even if they actually have a fleet of 200 Flankers. At any rate, the mainstay of NK combat power comes from ground units and rockets, not air force or the navy.

@EL20078 You'd lose those balls! Many forces are still using the Mig 21,it's still a good plane,very durable and made to be maintained in poorer countries and under rougher conditions. One big factor in it's design and construction is that it's relatively simple to maintain, but also needs constant work to be serviceable. If I had the money to buy a jet, I'd probably choose one of those over many other military aircraft, the performance is still that good, and they were built to last.

@EL20078 The Reason they can't feed themselves is that they maintain thier Military and by extension thier MiG's. Except for the MiG-19's since they can't make the parts themselves and don't see them as worth maintining anyway. Besides the MiG-21PFM + and MiG-21bis that the Norks use are much better than most other models.

PFM has a better radar, radar warning reciever, IFF, its still no match for a F-15/16 but SK still operates 230+ F-4 . If its the maintenance issue Oldbmwr is quite right in that many countries much poorer with much less of a military industry than the norks (Its the last remaining fully functional sector of thier economy) maintain substantial MiG-21 fleets.
