  • Ooooh this replaces Epicurus big time! I will not worry what your opinion is, if you think I'm terribe then I won't make you think otherwise, I think, meh! I'm great and I'm rejected, big deal! I do things my way, only that which I want, and only that which is within my power, success!

  • if those elements which are productive of the pleasures of the debauched released them from mental apprehensions... fear of death... and anticipation of pain; if in addition they knew when to set a limit to their desires we would never have anything to censure them for; indeed they would be fully actualizing all of the pleasures and in no way would have what is productive of grief or pain within them... :)

  • Thank you for sharing this;something to add is that Stoicism is rather a way of life more than a philosophy to adopt....

  • one of the reasons I love Epictitus is how grounded and real his thoughts are. Its almost so obvious--yet we always seem to stray from these truths and have to bring ourselves back to them...

  • @aspeculativefiction

Quite precisely. Why do we always stray from them? Maybe these truths are not applicable to our true nature?

  • this is so true.

there was some research that was done recently... lawyers by definition are always at the whim of their clients, they are therefore never in control of their own work...

and this results in great stress to them. there's research now that correlates happiness to the amount of control one feels in their life... it's one of those things that is so obvious, it's rather silly to think we need to research it...

  • Knowing what we can control and what we can't is more difficult than what it is made out to be.

  • not if we are truly genuine with ourselves. I listened to this, and immediately recalled some rather unattractive moments in my life... I don't believe most people are mature enough to let their minds tap those parts of memory, though... but understanding that is probably the first step...
