  • This was my fave track off that album. Love Jody's deeper voice....and the video was great!!!

  • THE 1ST BLACK WOMAN I EVER SAW IN CHANEL.....A FASHION ICON.....I LUV U JODY 4EVER!!

  • Jody, if you read this, I want you to know this is my favorite video of ANY artist. It's a shame videos nowadays don't have creativity like this. Something I've always wondered - What is that room with all the spinning wheels? Is that the basement of the Opera House? Are those wheels spinning generators?

  • wondering why the song has such bad sound??.. must do a re upload..

p.s i would love to have to help remix some of these song - some of them are still so great.

  • wondering why the song has such bad sound??.. must do a reupload..

  • This is one of my favorite Songs the others are "Most Of All" and "It All Begins With You". I love U Jody, I love all that U have done. Origianl Waaacker and all. True performer!! I missed U here in Chicago, I am a choreographer here and would have loved to work a number with U. <3

    God Bless Jody!!!

  • One of my faves of all times, I guess it has everything I adore about Art, Fashion, Music and was Filmed in Black and White at Paris Opera House. Kudos Miss Jody I still hold an unused ticket to your concert. Maybe one day I'll get to see you Tour again! Love It -jzebraa 2011

  • This track was all Andre' Cymone which was another Minneapolis music master that was behind a lot of the early Prince music, they grew up learning how to play together as Prince once lived with Andre' and his family when he left home. Andre' was playing Bass in Prince's 1st Band! ....So Check yo History......Peace

  • I would really like to know if Prince did not have anything to do with this track. He is known to let others take the credit for songs. But this track has his name all over it. Until someone definitively says otherwise, I still say it is a Prince track.

  • she one bad Lady......indeed

  • The most undervalued performer, artist and style maven of the 80's Doesn't matter though because those of us who KNOW, are the true lucky ones.

  • This song is flawless. I love the altered voice cause it adds so much to the funk. Watley and Cymone were a winning team! -JTaylor

  • @1organgrinder Appreciate it - though the vocal was not altered at all, just sung in a lower register.

  • This Is my Favorite you Rock...Tom King

  • This is not pop, but high art. This track hasn't aged a day in 20 years. Sounds as awesome as ever.

  • I will never tire of this video. Jody, you have always been a fashion muse of mine...and continue to inspire me.

  • This is one of my favorite songs ever!!

  • This is my favorite video because it was all Jody, all the time, I love your dance solos. I wish you would hold a class for that scissor thing you did. After all this time, I feel like it's almost perfected but needs supervision to make it sharp! As usual, thank you Jody and you and your music still thrill me:)

  • This song was stuck in my head for the longest. Glad I found it...

  • Jody was a naturally sexy and pretty woman. I used to play this record over and over again. Now watching this video, I realize that every thing from this current time period is pretty much recycled from the 80's and 90's...from the fashion to the music. The boots she's wearing, the ballerina skirt...everything is back in.

  • when I was a young girl, i wanted to be 3 things when i grew up: a pediatrician, Jody Watley and Sheila E! Nobody could dance like Jody and nobody had that overall style and swagger like Jody. The way she always flung that skirt and extended that leg--signature dance swag right there!

  • epic.

  • Rumor has it that this was originally intended to be a duet between Ms. Watley and the great Grace Jones!

I LOVED this video. The high fashion aspect was so ahead of its time.

  • Diva Watley's singing,Male Voguer, L'Opera, and the music where (still are:) [Is that A Cymone:] Magnifique !_!

  • L'Opera!?! Incroyable!! Jodi and that dancer (Who is that?:) Awesome Voguing, dancing and musique *_*

  • there is alot of arm movement like the both of them are fighting the wind. this is a demestic air fight. It's a thrill...still.

  • This video was totally funky one of Jody's best singles, this song should have take off to the upper reaches of the charts and the fact that's shot in the Paris Opera House makes it even more cooler.

  • Fair comment @ chicsensibilities I guess i am just sentimental of her past 80's career that reflects my early twenties , i agree she is truly talented

  • Time you returned to your winning formula 'Shalamar' it has never been the same since and the best is yet to come with a winning comeback :-)

  • @dax1br Ms Watley's winning formula has always been as a solo artist. As a longtime Jody fan I speak from my perspective. I don't know Shalamar music really. This video was sterling just like the rest of her videos and music. It might have made more sense if you commented it would be nice to see her go back to this style, but back is never good. I'm afraid the Shalamar analogy is off kilter. Bring on Chameleon Ms Watley I want the new next music you bring us. You never disappoint.

  • Love her still. Saw her live Grad Night Disney World 1990.

  • Who has footage of Jody and Jermaine Stewart to post? Pleeeeze!

  • I LOVE this song and video....

I got here 'cause I was in the mood to listen to some shalamar. After "A night to remember", how could I NOT listen to my favorite JW song..... Still a GREAT video. All these years later.

  • I forgot this song- and it's still funky today! :)

  • such a class act..."WHERE ARE MY KEYS? " .....

  • @mizjk - up there on the chandelier .

  • Love you Jody Watley!!! Love this video.. This is one of my favorites!!

  • It should be legal to drive 130 miles an hour as long as your playing this song! Few better experiences in the world far as I'm concerned.

  • Jody Watley was hot back in the day, How she evolved from the group Shalamar to solo status. This album was very hot , this was one of my favorite videos she really worked it. This remind me of the time when i was 19 years old when this first came out, this is what you call real music with real talent and she didnt have to show her azz for recognition because she was a classy lady.

  • Andre Cymone did his THING on this track!

  • I still own this LP. I would run it backwards on the recordplayer with my finger just to hear what this beat sounded like in reverse. If I remember correctly its recorded backwards because when I played it backwards it sounded like a normal drum beat. Anyway, Jody is just brilliance. Look how she moves. And she still has one of the most underrated voices ever.

  • I use to hate when people use to compare Jody Watley by calling her this so-called black Madonna back in the day. I use to school these people by stating that Madonna said it herself in a interview years ago on a radio station before she became big, that she use to watched Jody Watley & Jeffrey Daniels dancing on Soul Train and was influence by such artist and groups like Donna Summer, Shalamar, Chic and Rose Royce.

  • I forgot all about this song and video. Thanks so much for posting and refreshing my memory. Love Miss Watley's dancing and sense of style. Why don't they make videos like this anymore? Sexy but not smutty. Fun but not filthy.

  • I thought pleasure principle was the best video ever. Then I watched this one again. I was wrong ."Im sorry Miss Jackson"....Jody is 2 hot 4 ya. No disrespect. You've just got to overstand natural talent supercedes trained talent.

  • How I didn't know her untilI now? I loved this video and I love the video "borderline" and I loved her voice too. She's very good. Jody Watley! l thought she new in scene, but l knew she's from the 80's. We are in need of singers like her nowadays instead of that crap called lady baga :-(.

  • I am vogueing Old School like it is me in the Opera House there in Paris. There was no one like Jody Watley. I mean no one. She was so ahead of her time. lol.

  • best lost track by jody!!!! still a thrill!!!! fuckin A!!!!

  • gosh........ classic - not sure how I got here (watching the Culture show on MJ and then via Jeff Daniels to Jody I guess) - but this does what it says on the tin - happy x-mas

  • Miss Jody Was working this video! I mean really! SHe was hitting the mark with every turn, twirl and whack! She was working the hell outta them stairs!

  • I love Jody Watley and I remember really loving this song. Tonight, I love her and the song, all over again

  • Still THRILLING me!!! Love you Jody!

  • Comment removed

  • tyrone master of waacking

  • Freestyle DIVA. Style Icon. Ms. Watley co-wrote this with all the rest of her songs. Girl had/has vision, period. Black and white (pre-Bey/Sasha), Watley dont require an alias, she IS Jody Fierce-Timeless. lol She's still a thrill and I'm STILL a fan.

  • She's so cunty with it!

    I love it!

  • The freaking setting is incredible..andre cymone hooked her up with the music too

  • Jody looks so hot in this video!

    She's definitely turning me on!!

  • BELLA!!!!

  • Andre Cymone wrote the song.

  • this song is very early Prince-esque

  • Yeah. One of his "proteges" Produced it. I forget which one though.

  • I remember visiting the Paris Opera House--the first thing I remembered was this video. Just awesome.

  • It look hugh!!! How big is it?

  • The direction in this video is FLAWLESS. I remember I used to request this record on the radio here in NYC and they would NEVER play it.

  • Let me make a correction. Just checked out Jody's U-Tube channel and she still IS the sh!t. The voice is still there. Wow.

  • The song is hot and the video is hotter. They used all of that environment and even the ones they created like the gear room makes you want to just hang out there. Jody was the sh!t and never got the acclaim she deserved.

Anyways, I'm going home now....where are my keys??

  • Sweet remix!! Does anyone know where I can purchase a mp3 of this version??

  • I believe I remember in a video, Jody saying that this song was supposed to be a duet between her and Grace Jones. Another Black Diva, way before her time. She is legendary. Look her up. The duet fell thru but Jody decided to sing the song in Grace Jones' vocal range. That is why she is singing so deep. Jody was the bomb back in her day. She was legendary. A trendsetter. She made you move your body. Thanks for the post.

  • Is the man in the video, mother of the house of Ninja????

  • No. Willi Ninja was not the man in this video. This guy was a friend of Jodys. from Soul Train. I for got his name but she mentions it alot

  • That's Tyrone Proctor...he danced with Sharon Hill..*she always had a pretty smile*...they were my other two favs.

  • Beautiful! Awesome! What a special lady!

  • ALLLLLLLL THAT!!!!!!

  • I used to watch this on Video Music Box. Still Fierce!!!

  • Actually, The Rhythm guitar was performed Wendy Melvoin from Prince and the Revolution. Andre Cymone who was also part of Prince band in the very early 80's, he played the Bass before he got replace by Brown Mark. He and David Z. called upon Wendy to play the guitar, just like Pharrell Williams did recently on Madonna song "She's Not Me." This song definitely as the Minneapolis sound. I miss the funk.

  • The MN funk was & is definatley something else.

The fans of the MN sound can regognize it like second nature.

St. Paul & The Family had something going on as far as music production & possibly a new cd.

The myspace for The Family is advertizing an album called "@8".

This however was in the making in 2007 and there's not alot about The Family's music activity as of late.

  • OMG. Andre Cymone so played guitar on this, written by Watley and Cymone - love Wendy and Lisa, but you are so wrong. LOL

  • not corect andre plays all it all

  • Look at Jody's style with that catsuit, silver chain belt and leather jacket..She had a classic edgey fashion that would work here in 2009. I gotta put together an outfit like that. Wow.

  • As much as I admire Prince - he had nothing to do with this video or our permission to film at the Paris Opera House.

The credit goes to director Brian Grant - who assured them that we would respect the opportunity and would not leave one scratch! We kept our word!

  • LOL

rumors and haters...it's part of the jody history!

you should finish that biography girl!

    i can't wait ...

    XXX

  • Wow Jody! It's great that you post here! Been a fan since you started. This is my all-time favorite video of yours. Much love.

  • @jwatley1 Ms Watley......I had no Idea you were on this site....I simply loved your music, Hey I still do, you remind us that true music comes from within. keep reminding these new cats of that one undeniable fact!!!!

  • THE ORIGINAL DIVA

  • That acoustic guitar is something serious in here man.

  • Those eyes, that body, the hair, the loop earrings, those moves, that attitude, the smile...

    Jody is a DIVA EXTRAORDINAIRE!

This is by far my favorite video from her...

  • this is the bomb!

  • My favorite Jody Watley song. I thought it was Prince when I first heard it. Loved the video too, first of its kind at the time.

  • Ok...Several Things...

1st...Jody Watley was "Vogue" dancing for yrs before Madonna even began thinking about it...It's sad that Madonna made all of the money bcuz of it...smdh

2nd...Dayg715 Jody was out waaaayyyy before Janet...I guess you have forgotten about all of the yrs that Jody was in "Shalamar???"

3rd...Even though she neva' made the money or more importantly neva' given the credit...Jody's style, dance moves, voice, & wardrobe was copied by Madonna, Janet, T-Boz, Paula & Beyonce!!!

  • I think you're on to something here (lol) and she is working those vogue moves....

Ya know Jeffrey Daniels did the moonwalk on an Asian tv show one yr before Michael did it on Motown 25...I guess the credit always seems to go to the one with the most popularity....thanks to youtube we can see where things actually originated.

  • if you check out michael jackson's Bad video jeffrey daniels is it it so i'm sure he learned it from him,but of course he's michael jackson.

  • Thank you. Plus Jody's video Real Love was the first to featured an artist walking on a runway. 3 years later, EnVogue did the same thing in Free Your Mind.

Speaking of Madonna, she also copied Jody's hair style in the Real Love vieo as well.

  • Ok...Several Things....

It's sad how Jody was "Vogue" dancing 4 yrs but Madonna made all of the money...smdh

And to whomeva said Janet came out before Jody must have totally 4gotten all of those yrs that Jody was in "Shalamar" going back to the 70's

Jody may not have made the money but she was most definitely copied by both Janet, Madonna, Paula, T-Boz, & Beyonce...

    WE LOVE YOU JODY!!!!!!!!!!!

  • WORK JODY...DEF AHEAD OF HER TIME

  • i can see t-boz and chilli remaking this song!!

  • it's a shame how much madonna copied jody's style.

  • some peep hate when i mention the race thing but that's my freedom of expression, i heard she was part asian.

  • She's 100 percent Black. And her Godfather was the late Jackie Wilson.

  • janet copied sooo much from her!

  • madonna copied sooo much from her too.

  • janet came out before jody.

  • nah janet was lame when jody was hott, janet didn't get her style until she got with jimmy jam and terry lewis from the time.check out janet's first album. pre lewis and jam.jody was with shalamar and when she was doing this album she was with andre' cymone'.

  • Janet was never lame. You dont know what you are talking about. Janet was still hot when Jody came out. There wasnt all of the hating back then; that you kids like to do today. A lot artists get there inspiration of their producers. Michael and Quincy Jones(Thriller). Justin Timberlake didnt get hot until Timberland produced his last album. Look at todays artists like britney Spears who emulates Janet. Alot of the young female artists of today was heavily influenced by Ms. Janet.

  • Janet was on Good times a few years before Shalamar came out.

  • lol...uh..NOPE

    Shalamar was pre Janet.

  • And Madonna years later tried to adapt the vogueing Jody mastered to commercial but little skill in comparison.

  • This is the first time I've seen this extended video version of this song. (I got the 12" single at Amoeba Records; definitely worth it!) This song is so funky, I can't stand it! I hear it and I just wanna dance!!!

(Jody has said Madonna was one of her influences and you can see it here. But style- and talent-wise, there's NO comparison.)

  • When I see Rhianna now I think of Jody.

  • TYRONE PROCTOR. Ouch.

  • The video was shot in The Hall of Mirrors in the Palace of Versailles and they got totally funky. Thank you Jody for the video and song classy and funky.

  • this has got to be my all time favorite video. that dude tyrone p. is the greatest dancer.

  • After all this time... this song isss STILL a thrill !!! Work it girl

  • After so many years this song still gives me goosebumps...from the music (even though it's a remix, the scenery, the dancing and especially from 5:03 til the end!!!

  • nice guitar playing

  • Britney's Spears Slave For You is a bad bite off the whole backing track. But this song and Jody are for real. Love this song and her performance.

  • It's 2008...and she's just as funky as I remember her in '85....check those production values...helloooooooooooooo mr budget man...I'm going home now....

  • I remember I was 5 danceing infront of the T.V.... at 26, I got the moves down packed.

  • Wow! I had forgotten how dope this was. ANd it's wonderful to see such a nice video- no naked women, no man standing over her practically cumming on her face. This video was classic even for its time. The original Vogue!

  • I'MMA HAVE TO COSIGN ON THAT!!!

  • Myfav solo joint from Jody. Song and video were great. I absolutely adore her.

  • LOL. My ex-husband used to sing, "I'm still a man"... 'cause he said she sounded like a man singing just because she was using her lower register..smh

  • whant happen ms.madamecarroll between you&him & are you looking for a boy friend now?

  • this was da shit...a redo would be awesome!!!

  • where in Paris was this filmed?

  • The Opera house.

  • I love that woman. Oddly enough, I've been pulled over twice while that song was playing on the radio. LOL. This song was produced by Prince, if I'm not mistaken. You could easily replace his vocals over hers and it would fit.

  • No.

It was produced by Andre Cymone, Prince's very talented & severely underrated (half) brother.

And T-Boz could pull this off but J*DAVEY would rock this.

  • Oh. Ok. By the way, she was married to him at the time too but he wanted to keep it secret. Ain't that a bitch? I didn't know he was Price's half brother.

  • From the biography I read about Prince it wasn't his brother at all. Andre's family took him in because of problems Prince was having with his family. Andre mother was like the "mother" of the neighborhood.

  • When did Andre Cymone become Prince's half brother...hahahah

    lawd. Uh NO!

  • Pardon my misquote. Yet they were called & even considered 'half-brothers' since Prince stayed with Andre's family after he was kicked out his home.

  • she had her own style and look. she was so pretty to me. i think her and janet, karene white started the long curly weaves

  • my girl jody was so fly!!!

  • I SO wanted one of those skirts!!!

  • Yes Jodi & Jeffrey were dancers on "Soul Train" I would love 2 see T-Boz re-make this song & video...It would be hottt!!!!!

1 more thing...Jody Watley has been "Vogue Dancing" & similar dances to it since the 70's ain't it funny how when Madonna did it it became a "New Dance & made her millions???"smdh

Just like the insane idea that Michael Jackson inveted the "Moonwalk" we'd been doing the "Moonwalk" for yrs b4 Mikey eva did it...

    Love Ya Jody!!!!!!!!!!

  • Is it just me...or would a remake by Tionne " T-BOZ" Watkins produced by Jermaine Dupri just about be the ISH? !

  • I agree! She has the voice and personality to pull it off.

  • Jody, Andre Cymone on the music, Tyrone chorographing and a masterpiece video by Brian Gant.

Madonna eat your heart out. You'll never vogue like this!

Prince must have been jealous of his half-brother's track.

    *** Classic ***

  • Is it just me...or wouldnt you love to have Tionne " T-BOZ" Watkins of TLC remake this track ( produced by Jermaine Dupri or Rapheal Saddiq ) ? I think she could turn it out !!!

  • true that. that the only reason why watch this song can i can see tboz turning it out.

  • my best friend joyce brown looks like her alot...that was the jam back in the day,go girl!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Legend has it that Jodi was just messing around in the studio and singing a song in a low register when the producer heard her. He told her that she must do a song in that key. That'a how the voice can about. Someone correct me if I'm wrong. Jodi did dance on Soul train and so did Jeffrey Daniel. If you don't know that name look it up. He was in Salamar and also taught MJ how to moonwalk. Jodi also won a american bandstnd dance contest. Now I'm dating myself.

  • andre cymone produce this song...old school prince bass player..

  • Yeah, I did c that spread she did in Playboy as well as the botched boobjob the make-up ppl tried 2 cover up. She is talented. She did not hav 2 go there *sigh

  • Jody did pose nude in Playboy and she looked very sexy....another friend of mine said she looked like she had a breat augmentation but she always had breasts (and two kids)....it's completely possible that she did not have them done- but if she did they look good on her and her Playboy pictures were very sexy and did not hurt her image- it was like a high end fashion magazine layout where they show the same thing.

  • Sorry but they werwe augmented. Ain't hatin' on it cuz the pictures were hitting!! Very sexy even even before the Playboy shoot.

  • Back then, people didn't even believe she sang the deeper voice on this track! One of her best with Andre Cymone!

  • she was insanely talented....was a huge fan back then...always hoped for a comeback

  • Me too. Then her and her sister posed nude...that was the end...

  • nowadays that may have worked in her favour..how times have changed!

  • awesome :) thanks for the knowledge on that!

  • The man in this video, Tyrone Proctor, he invented it :) its spelled Waaking.

  • I heard this song, and watched the vid on BET 20 years ago. Thank goodness for YouTube is all I have to say.

  • 4give me if i'm wrong, but her dance moves r the same that janet jackson used in the Rythem Nation video...but this video came out 1st.

  • You know its funny how time flies......i love this music. Today music is crap and deserves crap as royalties

  • Pure genius. I would completely buy that she and her best gay friend would dance this way by themselves just because. I've always admired her earthy/unapproachable paradox. Still floored by the Madonna comparisons. Jody=conceptual. Madonna=calculating.

  • Every time I see this video, it gets better and better and better. Tyrone and Jody were excellent in this. (echoing the high drama and fashion accolades) This had to be one of the best videos of 87 if not of the decade.

Not to mention, after all of these years, the video for "Looking for a New Love" is perfectly timeless!

  • Madonna dont ever want it, No parts...

  • I hate to bring up Beyonce, But she even used the Dance that Jody and this guy from Soul Train are doing in this video (a classic soul train dance) In her video for "Green Light" when she and the 2 big girls are dancing. If u ever watch that video, get into it...

  • I like how nobody seems to remember that Jody was the original with 'where are my key's' I got to go... Jennifer Lopez says something similar in 'Love don't cost a thing'. I am sure the writer of that song was a JW fan!

  • WAAAAAAAY ahead of it's time.

    Iconography. period. Art. the groove.

    damn.

  • YES IT WAS AHEAD OF ITS TIME!

  • what a beautiful and talented woman....she is an orginal, can't be copied !

  • awesome. 4.53 to 5.26. the way she moves up and down those steps in that dress and still able to keep her eyes on the camera. movements are so in sync with the music.

  • outstanding video. Extremely artistic! who directed this video? he or she is a genius! jody is sooo talented. I wonder what her kids look like today and how old are they?

  • Was that a positive or negative comment classy? I hope its a positive one because I loved Jody Watley

  • lol, it's a positive comment- lol

  • SICKENING!!!

  • I love this video. Where is Jody Watley, and what is she doing, I wonder? Wouldn't mind seeing/hearing her again. :)

  • man this is my song!! yeah back in the day when i was in high school, people used to call me jody!! so of course i would dress like her and dance like her too! yes she was definately underated! this track is too funky,i saw her in chicago at a concert and she held my had when she sang! i was so excited!!!i still kinda channel her when i dress!!
