stopping sweatshop labour isn't necessarily about abolishing factory labour in entirety. The ideal is for the governments of these countries to create a social net in order to prevent harsh factory labour,by providing education/social welfare programs. However, such ideals are fairly unrealistic, and factory abolition would put many people out of work. That being said,it is imperative that we hold the corporations that establish these factories accountable to their promises of fair labour practices
my god liberals are clueless. conservatives arent much better ..... but holy jesus .... most of the people who cry about sweat shops have never in their life known what its like to starve to the point of near death.
I commend all anti sweat shop supporters for their great sense of sympathy and for their big hearts. I only wish, that when it came to thinking, they would put their heart down and use their brain instead.
think from their prespective...ur poor as shit, no food starveing children...and NO work... wwhat would u do? be happy sitting in the street while ur son is dieing at ur side..sweatshops help these people prosper by at least offering them a chance for change..
Chance? They almost have no free time and they earn almost nothing. They have no money to start a business or go to school to educate their self or as parent to send their child to school. Their whole life they will just work and eventually die in poverty...so what chance?
God you people make ridiculous excuses so you can wear your clothing without guilt.
So if they're so much better off with these jobs, why do they keep protesting, at risk to their lives? Sweatshops don't boost economies as they are often owned by foreign co's. Locals aren't paid enough to even give their children a better future, they are paid just enough to survive. Choice? they don't have your luxury of working at a better company, its work or starve. Face it, we fund this misery.
Look at it from different perspective, nice, emotional video and all that - that is very nice. But if you were people who have no job, or have much worse job would you take it? because remember, it is their free will to work, not slavery. Of course labor laws have to be established and obeyed by (age, minimum wage, et cetera). Plus it is quite clear that if it is properly applied, the sweatshops help to pump up the economy, imrovine people living standards and it is of course the stepping stone.
You completely contradicted yourself. You say its not slavery, but you also admit that they have no other choice. If they don't work there they will die of starvation. I would call that slavery.
And when kids as young as 7 are working in a sweatshop, yes I would call that slavery. Do you think its 7 year olds "free will" that has them working there? Were you out in the work force at that age for fun?
Cryspatus, American children don't have to join the work force at that age because we are a developed nation. It is a huge mistake to judge a developing country by the standards of a developed one, and you are doing that right now. Sweatshop workers are NOT slaves. They have the choice to wake up every morning and go to work, from which they can quit at any time. What these poor people need are more sweatshops so they can have more choices.
Getting your arm chopped off is better than getting decapitated, it doesn't mean you should have to do either. This isn't just about economy - it's about the humanity, and no one deserves to live like that.
I agree with you that the poverty these people live in is extremely unfortunate. However, you decide to target sweatshops and corporations as the main problem, while sweatshops are actually a solution. The problem is poverty. Factories like Nike's bring job opportunities to people who wouldn't otherwise have them.

No, it isn't only NIke who does these things.. but they are one of the biggest leaders, and set the example. You boycott at the head of the monster and the rest will fall with it. Just like with gas companies and other industries.. say you start with boycotting Nike, Enron, Mcdonalds.. and the others will have no choice but to change for the sake of their business. It is definitely worth trying.
The only thing that irritates me about all this is that it's all NIKE's fault. Adidas has sweatshops. NewBalance has sweatshops. Every god damn company has the horrid factories.
I think they're awful, but to single out nike is a little pointless.
nike is targeted because it is one of the most profitable and wealthiest shoe and clothing company in the world. Many companies follow Nike in its buisness strategies, and in this case it is using cheap labor to make expensive clothing. It is also the company that is more able to afford to pay workers above $1.60 than others. Also, Nike has had more complaints then any other company like adidas, fila...etc. But, you're right, sweatshops are bad. That's why we want to boycott Nike.
The point is that it's difficult to justify boycotting Nike but not every other company using exactly the same business practices. If you can find good shoes from companies that do not use sweatshops, go for it definitely. But I think that might be difficult.
eh eh eh. tone it down bboyyahsan. All those poor people would be in worse working consitions than the multinationals give them. Those people make an active choice to work there because it avoids them having to trawl through scrapheaps or work as prostitutes. The local companies offer even worse working conditions. Rich countries only trade with Rich countries on the whole
my teacher did this whole project on it and we wrote letters to the nike headquarters and they wrote back. it was a standardized reply letter for complaints like the ones we wrote.
Thank you for creating a powerful video about sweatshops that does not degrade the humans that are already exploited! The music is compelling as well! Would you mind if I used this in a powerpoint presentation?
