love the first solo- so soulful, so bluesy and heartfelt. remember listening to it while deployed overseas for Operation Desert Storm. it really makes you think about things.
I met Ritchie Blakemore and his girlfriend on Honolulu beach back in 1985. He’s really nice guy. Quiet guy. I was on vacation with parents. I was 19 yeas old.
blackmore is deep purple steve morse is a session musician he even said in an interview he didnt want the job the same as when joe satriani tried to take bloackmores place he knew it was wrong the only reason steve has stayed so long is for the money and thats it also jon lord played an importatnt role in purple and without him and blackmore deep purple is like a dog with 3 legs limping along and im a guitar player as well and blackmore is up there with page and hendrix in my opinion
@guitarbassplayer68 Says a guitar player...Did you know that the only original member of Deep purple is Ian Paice and if you forgot bands are about team effort. More so, I think Ian's work is WAY more influential to their sond than blackmore's. It looks like you're looking at one piece of the puzzle and leaving the most important part out.
DonvanderDeijl if you cannot comprehend the evolution of the band and band's music, do not pay for it, but please us simple words " in my opinion ........"
Maybe Gillan today sound differently than back 1970, but he still sounds good, Morse not only better that Richie as a player he is by far more creative. Departure and recent news about Jon Lord helath is quite sad, but Don Arrie feel his shoes just fine. BTW He wrote M.r Crowley for Ozzie, so think twice before criticizing the MUSICIOANS
DP P strangers album was good, but not that good. Blackmore was good but he said it was nostalgy and he was right. Later on Gillan,s voice was in that bad shape(still is) that we can no longer talk about Deep Purple. It,s history after this album. Blackmore was doin fine in Rainbow again and still is in Blackmnore,s Night. Deep Purple with morse without Jon Lord and Gillans voice is a terrible waste off money and time.
I interpet this song to mean that DP, despite their world-wide popularity, wil never again relive the glory of their heyday, the mark II 69-73 period. The fact is, they've never been as good before or since. The 9 year hiatus hurt them. Don't get me wrong. Their worst night is better than most band's best. The recent departure of Jon Lord was the final straw. That's what Gillan and Glover were trying to say, even back in '84.
No mather what you say, I think that listening to pop and rap sometimes can be useful. After 5 min with junk music I can appreciate Good music even more ;)
@barnysan Correction: blackmore + gillan + lord + glover +paice = epic rock sounds. :) It was the collaboration of those five men together that really made Deep Purple what it was. :)
I never got to see them the first time around but was lucky to see the comeback tour with this album it was awesome. Always wished blackmore and Page would do something together.
i remember being a child and this band playing in the living room stereo with the smell of weed and incense mixed together not knowing my father was getting high.. enjoying the little beauty within his reach. I understood growing up, now its just a memory
@jzuypxa I tell you . Honesty ! Is this simple . Everyone knows that Deep Purple was a money machine and Ritchie being part of it felt that fans needed a reward for their commitment , hence the what you asking .

If this song was by ... for example, Queen or Dire Straits or who else... it would be a hugely famous, legendary ballad. While its romance and its guitar solo are a pearl for few, I am happy to be one of those lucky ones.
Very dark, very deep song. I discovered Deep Purple way too late. All that 80's metal flooded the radio and I missed out on the real deal for way too long.
2 BLACKMORE'S SOLO......SUBLIME....THE HARMONY, THE SOUND, THE INTENTION....THE CHOICE OF NOTE.... 3 BENDING AT 3:23 ARE AWSOME AND THEY ARE BETTER THAN ANY FAST SCALE OR SWEEP....THE APEX, THE APOTHEOSIS OF THE ORGASM.... RITCHIE BLACKMORE IS ABSOLUTELY THE BEST! SORRY FOR MY ENGLISH....
@plijevo Hm, I wouldn't agree with you... I'd take Mr Uli Jon Roth as a father of the neoclassical genre, for which Blackmore gets all the credits... I mean, it's not like I don't listen to Richie so I don't know what I'm talking about, but guys like Yngwie Malmsteen would be nuts without U.J.R. and Richie's combined influences (100% of Yngwie's stage appearance is copied from Richie, and around 90% of his playing style and techniques is taken by U.J.R.) so please, don't say things like this..:)
@ufofan1980 -- "In the picture at :52, is that Ian Hill sitting next to Blackmore, and who is the guy sitting above and between Roger and Ian. Coverdale?"
L to R - Ritchie Blackmore, Jon Lord, Roger Glover, Ian Gillan (standing behind) and Ian Paice. This is most likely right around the time that Ian Gillan left, to go on the road with "Jesus Christ Superstar." I don't remember why Roger Glover left; that was a long time ago - the early 70s. David Coverdale and Glenn Hughes replaced them.
There is only a Deep Purple with Ritchie in the band...I met Ian Paice a few years back...Super nice down to earth guy...As for Ritchie ever going back..i think we stand a better chance i flinging a dime in the air and watching it get hit by lightning.I remember hearing this solo the first time and the hair on the back of my neck standing up.thank god i saw this show in 91..Fucking ego's suck!!!...wipe the slate clean and get back together for fucks sake!!!!fuckers!!!

Friend thanks about your invite. The most of your songs are great. Before some years I listened to only heavy metal. No I listen to a lot of kinds of music. I love rock, poems being music, and folk dances. I love folk dances from your country. I don't know if you like them, but they are amazing. Also I love Duran-Duran, Pink Floyd, Metallica and Iced Earth, but not all their songs.
There is no 'they' Deep Purple, don't you get it, it's only one, you still don't get it??
I swear to God that's the truth, no matter what you think, sure democracy with one democratic leader, policies, ships...
You guys are like extrodinarily great, but u suck without Ritchie, your sound was so bad and some allure - compliement, he really brings out the best in you, please bring out the best in him, I don't really even notice Ritchie when you're with him u know - swear!
OMG! Just hit me that Ritchie should have just put out this banner and played your songs from the album - it's basically the same thing wasn't it we dont see u there only the banner that says u are supposed to be, and i'm not paying 99 cents for this song - maybe u have, don't know can't see it open the stage and the door.
Great song, but what made it one of the greatest of Purple is the out-of-the-world Ritchie's solo in the middle section - hoping someone will show . . . the rest is legendary.
Agree - it was great to see them play this at the NEC on 13th November 2009. But SilverTongue isn't quite right about Perfect Strangers. It wasn't on the set at the 2007 concert at Wembley - squeezed out because the set had to be shortened to accommodate both Thin Lizzy and Styx.
They (Deep Purple) played this song Live for the first time ever last night at the Machester Apollo. This is true, check thehighwaystar or Deep Purple hub. Ian did it on his Gillan's Inn tour, and I guess he convinced the rest of the band to do it. Also, it's the first time ever since the reunion, that they haven't played 'Perfect Strangers' at all.
Yes, they have played 'Perfect Strangers' on every tour since 1984, except for the UK leg in 2007 on some dates, and now recently, it wasn't played, but 'The Battle Rages On' was played instead after Don's solo. I wasn't talking about the track 'PS', but this song, 'Wasted Sunsets'. They (Deep Purple) played it for the first time about a month or so ago. Ian Gillan played it on his 2006 'Gillans Inn' tour, but Purple has never played it prior to that.
Agreed this is a great song. In fact its my favourite off the perfect strangers lp. We all know that Ritchie is a great guitarist but I think he's even better on the slower stuff than he is when he's playing a million miles an hour.
Because this song breaks our heart, every time you listen to it...
Even when you have a great relationship, like I have, I can still relate to this song and the lyrics, we all have gone through rough times, did'n't we?
If I remember correctly, this song is right before "A Gypsy's Kiss" on the album. Listening to the two in sequence is all about loss and...then...redemption!

Rubbish mate. They've played Perfect Strangers on every tour since the reunion and I've seen Purple perform this song before live too.

In 1984/85 the only played these songs from 'Perfect Strangers' Live:
Perfect Strangers
Knocking At Your Back Door
Gipsy's Kiss
Under The Gun
Nobody's Home
And on later tours, only 'Perfect Strangers' and 'Knocking At Your Backdoor'.

Damn...Ritchie's solo makes me cry.Best solo ever...

Agreed this is a great song. In fact its my favourite off the perfect strangers lp. We all know that Ritchie is a great guitarist but I think he's even better on the slower stuff than he is when he's playing a million miles an hour.

I agree. The solo reminds me a bit of Ritchie's solo on Stone Cold. Very melodic with alot of staccato phrasing. Def at his best on the slow stuff!

Because this song breaks our heart, every time you listen to it...
Even when you have a great relationship, like I have, I can still relate to this song and the lyrics, we all have gone through rough times, did'n't we?

i don't know if any one realizes ..what pain..
Why would you make song like that?
try4life1 2 years ago
If I remember correctly, this song is right before "A Gypsy's Kiss" on the album. Listening to the two in sequence is all about loss and...then...redemption!
virtuba 2 years ago
@ try4life1: Sorry--I was wrong. It's "Hungry Daze" that plays next on the album. I stand by what I said that it's redemptive.
