In my personal opinion, I don't really know. Adultery has grave consequences. The purpose of marriage is to live a secure and stable, life, bring kids, and avoid fornication, and in the case of falling in love, living with your loved one and having legal sex with her. Adultery would undermine this whole purpose in a severe act of betraying your married one, and will eventually ruin society and spread fornication.
However, whether it deserves the death penalty or not, I dunno.

For instance, Bin Laden quotes the sword verses of the Qur'an selectively as pep talk for his followers.

I don't know, I guess Muslims find too many haters to explain it to them all or something. But in my Islamic Education class in school we are told to forgive and be patient, to care for the poor, to use an open mind and contemplate the science of the world around us, to respect our parents, etc.

@NightShadeAEB , Islam preaches tolerance and love only towards other muslims, all the early verses that showed a modicum of tolerance towards other faiths were abrogated by later more agressive verses that made it clear than non muslims faced three choices under islamic rule, convert, pay the jizya or die. So if the whole world ever submitted to islam then maybe you would have a point, but that, realisticly isn't going to happen.

@sybil2008 Just like the sword verses only applied to a certain occasion, I'm sure the Jizya applies to only a certain time. Jizya was at a time where religion determined everything. Today, no one cares less about an individual's choice of religion save for fanatics as the human race modernized, so I'm sure the world could do without it.
But there is the verse that forbids force conversion, and that has always been the case. In my class, we were told to hate behaviour and actions, not people.

In my personal opinion, I don't really know. Adultery has grave consequences. The purpose of marriage is to live a secure and stable, life, bring kids, and avoid fornication, and in the case of falling in love, living with your loved one and having legal sex with her. Adultery would undermine this whole purpose in a severe act of betraying your married one, and will eventually ruin society and spread fornication.
However, whether it deserves the death penalty or not, I dunno.

But in the Hadith, Muhammad turned away both the man, and then the woman that committed adultery even when they surrendered, and yet they insisted on being purified. That tells you something.
If Muhammad forgave adulterers, then does that not mean we should do the same? I don't see why force onto adulterers what those people wanted for themselves, and was not imposed on them. They asked to be purified, yet Muhammad was hesitant about it.

So if I wanna follow Muhammad, doesn't that mean I should avoid whipping them?
I'm not sure if there's any verse asking us to whip... there probably is, but I forgot which one. If I could find it, then I'll paraphrase it.
