  • A Johnny Hiland lesson very cool if you want real lesson for me on your You Tube. Email and I will send you a vid. lesson. Johnny Hiland

  • nice lick!! thanx Rob.

  • What for guitar is that in the guitar rack stand behind you

(he black one with face binding)

    Dylan

  • Did you say the fastest or the fattest ?

  • I Like Your Shirt. What Brand Is It?

  • Good lesson. Great picking. But you never said what key you were playing in

  • hi chappers, your a cool dude , i hate you cos you is good lookin , and can play a guitar well. but johnny can play better he can play anything ,and in any style . your fast but no feeling . sorry mate just my opinion, ..

  • Cool tut... BUT why do you end the first run with two upstrokes? And why do you begin it with two down strokes. This is the part of speed picking which has always confounded me... the "whats the diff" factor. I assume its value added but really wonder why. Can u make sense of this for me?

  • Are those sperm stains on your pants?

  • One, and two, and John-ney-hi-land!

  • hey, quick question....would you recommend youre LTD fx to an intermediate player who wants a guitar for some thrash metal and classic rock? id love some feedback, and im very interested in that guitar.

  • dude thanks for that lesson,i wish you where my teacher cuz i dont have any and i have been trying to find a good way to built up speed and at the same time try to be really presice in where and how im putting down my fingers and this has taken my hands and made them faster lol is just that i am a lefty and i learned using a right handed guitar so my hands got more use to play like a righty not a lefty lol but thank you really love your vids they show the best licks ever keep on monkey lord !

  • happy 1 year anniversary on this video. you were a god then, a god now, and always will be!

  • this is probably a stupid qeustion but what is chickin pickin .?

  • Wow his chin is bigger than his! face dam good player tho

  • Chicken picking's ok but I prefer turkey tugging.

  • chappers, I'm shocked, didn't know your into chicken pickin mayhem!

would be great to see you with a telecaster playing clean once in a while.

  • Great, as usual. Top notch stuff. Thanks.

  • Came across this vid as a Hiland fan..

First, thanks for the clear lesson brother!! Amazing chicken picking..

+ I'm so glad to see a video with an Explorer, not playing Metallica.

I've had people bash my Esp Explorer video because I played something completely different.. apparently we don't "deserve" the guitar? HAHA ;)

  • Killer lick rob!! Thanks for sharing, I would like to hear you burn that up on a tele tho ;-) Still stellar job

  • It gains nothing using distortion.

  • yes using distortion

  • every time i hear this guy's voice, i think the chef from dinner: impossible is playing. haha

  • awesome bro. Im a huge fan of Hiland too. Maybe your pickups have a little hot outputs for the twang tone but hey wont argue on this :) great vid. 5*

  • 1 and 2 and johnny hil-and LOL

  • FYI - Johnny Hiland is from Maine.

  • I see the BIG TROUBLE IN LITTLE CHINA IMPORT poster in the backround.....SICK!!!

  • This dude's name is actually called Johnny "killer fingers" Hilland. He's a Texas guitar Hero. One of the better guitar players I have heard. He's up there with Paul Gilbert, Zakk Wylde and Malmsteen. All wicked shredders.

  • @MrHardrod2 texas ....sounds like a brit to me

  • Rob Chappers is Brit but the style he is showing is Johnny "Lightning Fingers" Hiland. Yes, the dude in this video is british and his name is Rob Chappers although the chicken pickin' guitar lesson he is teaching is the style of Johnny "Lightning Fingers" Hiland.

  • Not trying to be picky, but Zakk is not a shredder. I have met him many times and even he says this. Doesn't make him a bad guitarist, just not a shredder. Johnny is not a shredder either any more than is George Benson. All very fast guitarists, but speed alone does not define shred. Gilbert and Malmsteen on the other hand, pure shred. Having said that, I love them all for different reasons.

  • Yep, I agree. Wrong choice of words. I meant, he is up there with some of the best guitar players in the world and some of the fastest guitarist. Zakk's style is pretty fast and so is Paul Gilberts style (I always loved this dude's style as I have picked up a lot of techniques from him). Malmsteen's style is neo-classical and I am not a fan of this genre of music which kinda reminds me of baroque music. It's okay but not my taste. I also am not too fond of metal or death / grundge metal.

  • @doc7string Well put. Why hate a style when it's great in it's own? I just hope to get better every day in one way or another. Pretty tough to know where to go from here. I'm a beginer in areas and intermediate in others. Any tips are welcome.

  • Hey rob really great lesson! But can you please explain me the music theory behind country playin? Your awesome! Cheers

  • Very interesting stuff

Johhny Hiland is a FAT player for sure

  • Ha.

  • Great playing & lesson.

  • This is a great lesson- A must know for every real guitarist-The notes on the pentanic was confusing-not no more

  • Thanks, Rob. Great lesson!

  • but Jason Becker is faster

  • Of course, Becker was the best, but Hiland is still great.

  • Dude you are comparing two completely different players with different techniques and styles... there is no comparison

  • great thanks ROb

  • Thanks man! Great lessons. I totally appreciate you taking the time to make and post this video!

    You're awesome.

  • Great! But what's the deal with the reverb overload?

  • great picking, but the tone is quite wrong for country, haha. but i enjoyed the lesson! Thanks!

  • I found the tone wasn't that out place. Low gain and warm, sounded pretty non-metal.

  • fair enough, tone is as tone does. it's not what i would have used, but it's not my place to say it was wrong. it's non-conventional. but it still sounded great!

  • Mad, mad licks......people really need to check out more Johnny Hiland but do be prepared to want to burn your guitars afterwards.

    Nice work ML :D

  • Aha - But he plays PRS in some other videos, they are incredibly versatile for pretty much anything (In my experience)

Great video, that first section is a great warm-up too

  • He is NOT endorsed by ESP anymore. That ended a month or two ago. He was at the time of the making of this though. He is currently not endorsed for guitars or amps.

  • endorsed by Marshall... wat a dude

  • I thought that he wasn't endorsed by them anymore, he said that in a few other videos

  • aye, i think he'd represent tom anderson guitars or suhr guitars quite nicely.

  • maybe he likes metal

  • Hiland is an amazingly talented and versatile player. Great lesson Rob.

  • ROB!!! man...this was what I needed :-O fantastic lesson and respect to Johny ;)...please, could you do more these bluesy/country fingerpick style lessons? pls pls pls :D I am sure others would appreciate it too

    Addie

  • I JEFFING LOVE THAT GUITAR!!

  • where`s yer stetson boy ?

    Fooooataanng !

Good job . Chappers - who gave you this idea?

  • I'm not a great fan of Country (as you probs know Rob \m/) but wow! Rob your a great teacher!

  • Great video also. Hard to find good country lessons :)

  • What about gutrie govan?

  • hybrid picking is simply amazing!

  • chappers, never heard of Shawn Lane?

  • Of course mate, and he was a monster player... but unfortunately he's dead, I was talking about living guitarists ;-)

  • i figured :) , you're a fantastic player, and i wish you the best!

  • @oscar7557 The bluegrass madolin player from the band Blue Highway?

  • Goto my channel to see some Johnny while recording on my album in his basement :) He was laying tracks on my album single Nascar Superstar. Enjoy some Johnnie in the raw :)

  • i love your "BIG TROUBLE IN LITTLE CHINA" poster

  • well done chappers !!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • johnny is an amazing player. i only discovered him last year :D

  • what kind of emg's has your guitar got? im looking to get new emg's for my dean vendetta, any suggestions?

  • hahaha dude that was awesome, thanks Rob!!! That will occupy me for many hours... lol

  • It's amazing how much is going on in that bit when slowed down, holy cow!!! Johnny is a genius, and so are you for figuring this out! Good lesson mate! ;-)

  • Buckethead quite likes his chicken picking. He can do it unbelievably fast.

  • you didnt reply to my message...??

    anyways good lesson :)

  • Just did, sorry mate I have soo many emails to get through... 800 at the moment ;-)

  • Great lesson Rob. When I get time I'll learn this for sure.

  • Great as usual Chappers

Johnny Hiland is a sick guitar player

    SionJ

  • Thanks for this, Rob. I've been trying to integrate some country stuff into my playing for a long time now. Still rather unsuccessful but I suppose this is a step. Props for reppin' Johnny Hiland too. He's an absolute demon (especially considering the man is legally blind). I also agree that Yngwie is probably one of the fastest in the world. In spite of all the jokes that are made about him and the twenty first century shredders, I still think Malmsteen is one of the fastest.

  • I thought you dont use orange amps any more.

    But great playing

  • He's not endorsed by Orange any more, but the Rockerverb actually belonged to him before the endorsement deal.

  • Hahaha in that photo you look so skinny

    put on weight ?

  • Yeah I got a back injury last year... Just working it off now actually lost half a stone in the last 2 weeks \m/

  • OH NO! im sorry man i didnt know :(

    p.s i love you haha

  • @bubbleabee did you just insult the chappers? :O

  • @dimeowns100

yeah thats what i thought! if i find out he did im a gona pop a cap in his ass

  • Always said that to him haha, that he always replies. By the way, if anyone wants to see a whammy demonstration (I know there are people out there that don't know if they should buy one), just check my profile and watch the Satriani's Searching solo cover, it is really good IMO. By the way, how do you call that sound Rob, sounds like crunch but its not really crunch. I really liked it, going to see if I can achieve it.

  • Thanks for the lesson Rob :-)

    Jordan

Ps: we all respect the fact that you ARE now a youtube icon and you still reply to comments :-)

    Jordan

  • you sore him live? English accent

  • zakk wylde masterd the "chicken picken" as well

  • this guy is crazy! saw him play in a prs guitar promo video.

  • damn it, i will have to buy this lesson when i next have moneys. I really want to learn chicken picking to expand my genres.

  • ive been doing some chickien picking myself is kinda complicated at first. brad paisley is also phenomenal!!!

  • Finally, finally someone breaks down a chicken picken riff note for note. That's very rare on youtube. Thanks Chappers.

  • Thanks mate ;-)

  • this is good note for note stuff..... but far from the vibe and spank of the actual solo.

    however thanks for posting

  • greatest guitar teacher!

  • Wow! Cheers mate ;-)

  • Insane solo. :)

  • pointy guitar!

  • is that a black tele i see in your guitar stand?

  • It's actually blue, but yes it's the Jerry Donahue Peavey Tele ;-)

  • beautiful, i love a great tele, i take my hat off to you sir :)

  • Nice! I shall go purchase some Johnny Hiland stuff. :)

  • This lick is insane

  • hahaha, perfect guitar to play country with :D

  • Michel angilo batio is actually faster then Malmsteen, still fast as hell though.

  • Agreed man, Speed Kills is all you have to say when you talk about Batio

  • Speaking about the fastest shredders check out Todd Duane ("Treetopper" Youtube name) - now the second living fastest shredder in the contest where Malmstien was only in 16th place. This chap has came from the Guitarplantet on flying V !

  • :-) I'm glad Chappers is a Johnny Hiland fan too.

  • chappers!! what is that guitar i see in the stand!?

    at 2:49

  • That is a new LAG 500 series, brand new and ready to review ;-)

  • Hiland is insane, isn't he like 80 per cent blind or something too?

    Good lesson, cheers big man.

  • I don't listen to country music. Ever.

However, I just bought both Hiland albums available on iTunes. Now I need to get out my Tele and learn this crazy lick.

  • Awesome go listen to Loud and Proud!! Great track to show off Johnny's cross technique! ;-)

    Me

  • Johnny Hiland really is the mad notes.

  • awesome lesson! thanks for that.

  • go country, the second coolest guitar stuff, i think.

  • agraheed... in a country accent

  • Good lesson, and Nice EX

  • awesome LTD!

  • Thanks mate, one of my favorite guitars ever ;-)

  • Warning: watching this video may make you sprout feathers, bob your head rhythmically as you walk and, in extreme cases, shit eggz (as opposed to brix).
