  • great!

  • man i wish i could have a chance to just jam with fucking gods

  • Interesting how it kind of sounds like Rush but kinda doesn't. Billy is clearly an awesome bass player, but Geddy has such a unique sounds. Just confirms that you can't replace any of them and still have that Rush sound/groove.

  • Just so everyone knows...this IS Billy with Alex and Neil jamming, with Billy playing Geddy's Wal for a soundcheck. Billy has this posted on his website so Im pretty sure he knows who he was playing with and with what bass.

  • That's geddy's wal bass. no doubt about that

  • @Rushifyer Yes and it never really worked. Sounded very flappy and thin on record. Jazz or Ric every time!

  • I've been looking for this for a while, and i was wondering if any of you friendly youtubers could help me find this piece of RUSH gold.

  • A Rush sound check alone is better then any modern top 40 song

  • Sheehan is playing with Geddy's Bass?...I guess...

  • it doesnt sound like Billy until 3:40. these guys are all holding back immensely.

  • I love that pic of neil with the scarf an touque

  • i think hendrix would be impressed by this

  • isn't interesting that in a jam between NEIL PEART, BILLY SHEEAN it turns out that

ALEX LIFESON steals the show; i think that says something

  • Alex's got some wicked feedback mojo goin on here. It's almost as if he's venting all the pent up frustration from the keyboard dominated 80's. lol

  • Yes, Is Neil

  • It even has that Presto vibe...I love it....Billy's no joke....fabulous!

  • SORRY EVERYONE BUT THAT IS NOT BILLY SHEEHAN! THAT SOUNDS LIKE LES CLAYPOOL TO ME, LETS GET THE FACTS STRAIGHT!!

  • @jaybokral he's using a wal thats why

geddy used the wall basses around this time so i guess he's just doing the same

  • @jaybokral if this was taken in 1990 like it says than it can't be Primus, Mr BIg were the opening act around that time, I remember this tour coming thru my city.

  • @jaybokral You get the facts straight buddy. It's Billy...just ask him. He's very easy to reach and answers every email.

  • @7stringSupression Thanks man, I was thinking about contacting him about that. I guess he must be playing through Geddy's gear or something...

  • It's takes a lot of time and work when it comes to a drummer playing tight with a bass player...They are the poly rythem section in every band.

If your a drummer lucky enough to get on the same page as a bass player's mind set playing tight your a lucky drummer.

Getty and Neil were as tight as peanut butter and jelly and early on shows proved they were a matched set.

Billy Sheehan is a great bass player but the formula between Neil and Getty was built over years.

  • @JBL8863 Geddy

  • @lavaxtris1 Your right...Geddy not Getty...sounds like Getty but isn't

  • No, thats Neil. Thats just Neil holding back and adjusting to playing with a different half to the rhythm section. Man, Alex is better with a delay than ANYBODY. His eighties stuff was just as phenomenal as his seventies in many ways.

  • I love the way Sheehan is playing in the style of Geddy. If you're familiar with Sheehan's style, you can tell he's sort of imitating Geddy here.

  • @charlzm It's probably also because he's playing with Neil and Alex too.

  • 8:40 it's neil and alex doing it right.

  • Def,Alex on gujtiar. But that is not Neil....Probably a tech doing a sound check

  • @racktime

    This, absolutely not Neil.

  • @racktime No way - that was Neil. I would put serious money on that. Did you hear those snare fills?

  • where can I get a copy of the whole audio track.. this is freakin badass! Makes me wanna go 140mph down a lonesome old desert road... lol!

  • he's probably one of the only bassists that could get anywhere near Geddy

  • Haha this is a soundcheck? Most of my soundchecks consist of the tech guy confirming that I suck and I just crack on with it.

  • nice jam. however, i would have liked to hear neil do some more fills with his toms on this one. i don't know why he didn't go off more with those toms.

  • 2:18 HAHAHAHA

  • GODLY~~~ ALEX IS THE BEST!!! BETTER THAN JIMI AND JIMMY IMO!~

  • @lordertai If by Jimmy you mean Jimmy Page, I HAVE to disagree! You need to really listen to and watch Led Zeppelin! I LOVE RUSH but I think Alex would agree with me here! Jimmy's timing and knowledge of music is unmatched! I'm not a big Led Zeppelin fan but Jimmy just blows me away everytime I listen to him whereas Alex is just more or less background noise for Geddy & Neil!

  • @bluesruley2k even though I think Led Zeppelin is a bit overhyped , I have to agree that Page is a different breed of of guitarist altogether . He is unmatched as far as feel and thought provoking playing .Page is the one of the finest composers of music in any genre . Noone can provoke emotion with an instrument quite like him .Love that guy.

  • 3:40 starts the bass solo thingy

  • Omg!!! :O

  • TWO COMMENTS: Is that Neil on the drums, because you would think otherwise SECOND: Alex IS the most UNDER RATED guitar player in rock music... PERIOD!

  • @n2drumzs (bro if you don't think that's the professor on the drums, then listen again) so methodical in his delivery of this drum part....

  • Ah yes, this was during the Presto tour, with Mr. Big as opening act. Sweet!

  • Does this tune even have a name or is it all improv? If it's improv it's amazing. Shows what 3 music professionals can do.

  • @RCAvhstape

Improv all the way my man!

  • This is one helluva soundcheck.

  • Classic. Geddy was late.

  • I always hated Billy's tone on his own basses. He's definitely playing through Geedy's gear. Sounds killer.

  • Oh I get it now. This band has a huge geek following, because that's what they are. Geeks. Also, I noticed at their show that there were tons of gays, not that there's anything wrong with that, but why the big following? Literally, it was as if the show was in San Fran. Which of these guys is gay?

  • @gitchigoomi uhhh theyre all married dude. none of them are gay....

  • @chuchaka Why the huge gay following? Seriously. I would say that roughly 40 percent of the audience consisted of gay male couples.

  • @gitchigoomi i honestly dont know what ur talking about. Where did you see em? i saw them in florida and own quite a few of their dvds and havent seen anything like that. are you sure it isnt just groups of friends?

  • @chuchaka I saw them in Boston. TD Banknorth Garden. Boston has a gay community, like any other city, but we were shocked to see such a predominant gay crowd at the concert. It was so overt, that we almost asked one of the gay couples what the appeal was, but we didn't want to offend. I searched the internet, but didn't come up with anything.

  • @gitchigoomi you are profiling and it's sounds like you might be from a physicians perspective. all of the guys at Iron Maiden concerts... would you say that to them? please realize that you can't look at people and figure out what or who they are by sight. my girl always shares that with me... perspective son, perspective....

  • @humbledrumah "...you can't look at people and figure out what or who they are by sight." You can when you are looking at hundreds of male couples kissing, hugging, and holding hands.

  • @gitchigoomi stop talking shit about things you don't know.

  • @LivingInTheLimeligh7 Fuck off.

  • @gitchigoomi wtf you talking about? rush is neither geek or gay. wtf.

  • Thats the thing about these studio session raised virtuoso's. They can run thruough things like this for days and oooh and aaaah everyone with technical tricks, but in the realm of writing a song that people want to hear, it always sounds like a demo CD that comes with a new keyboard, bass, etc.

I have nothing against Sheehan, but I can't listen to his music for that reason.

  • @RallyCat909 Toto was a studio band, and they seem to be doing just fine by me

  • WOW! They get do a album of this and I would buy it!

  • That's the Wal

  • Sounds like the Wal.

  • This is bad ass. it sounds like Billy is using Geddy's rig. Geddy was still using amps at this time (today he runs direct). There is no stereo chorus, which Billy Sheehan uses, and it sounds like a Rickenbacker 4001 as opposed to his Yamaha which has active pickups. Man, this would have been cool to witness. Nice post man!

  • @mxr226

If we are going to get technical. Actually he is running Orange amps for this tour.

  • @mxr226

It must be Geddy's setup as it is for the Rush soundcheck, shame theres no video clip it would be great to confirm things, but 100% sure Billys yamaha bass would be passive, well worth a listen though

  • @floodwarning The bass sounds like a Wal, could be Billy on Geddy's Wal? Dunno, they're both badass, so it's hard to tell. :P

  • @CorvetteCoonass I think you are right about that. It sounds like a Wal and not a Yamaha. It is a soundcheck.

  • How did you get this and in such great quality?

  • This is the stuff that awesome is made of.

  • Wow...when billy sheehan steps up, he freaking steps up, doesn't he? In fact, all three of these guys did an outstanding job, and they were just buying geddy some time. What musicanship. Alex playing off the feedback around 8;00 is nothing short of impressive.

  • @mezap77 - Sheehan always had the talent, he just never had the material or the stability of a long-term band. "Mr. Big" was crap pop, and he never stuck around with anyone or anything else long enough to make worthwhile music. It's really a waste, much like his $cientology idiocy.

  • Why do you still support the biggest human rights abuser and human trafficker in the US Billy ????? Google Scientology

  • I said got damn!

  • This is unbelievable! Further evidence that Alex is the most underappreciated guitarist in rock. No one else sounds anything like him.

  • I have had the pleasure of meeting Billy Sheehan after a G3 gig when he was playing bass for Steve Vai. I asked him what was it like to jam with Alex and Neil from Rush and he gave me his full attention.

He said that he enjoyed playing with them immensely and that he has never met 3 more sincere and down to earth guys than Geddy, Alex and Neil.

What a great guy and a pleasure to talk to.

  • Oh, crap~! Very cool. I just commented on Billy covering King's X, and now this jam with Neil and Alex~! I'm glad I came across this! 8)

  • This is awesome!

  • Awesome bass sound, this was 1990, so I'll guess Ged's bass was a Wal.

  • Billy actually played some pretty cool riffs. Better then I thought it was going to be. I always thought that Billy was a flashy Van Halen on bass want-to-be.

  • Front picture is awesome!

  • What a bad ass jam.

  • *Shakes head and sighs* Alex Lifeson, everyone. That's all to say. \m/

My father was right: Alex is a legend. :3

  • Hi Alex + Keep rocking or whatever. Enjoy the rush music you play on cassette :)

  • wow great jam, just makes me wonder how crazy it would be if geddy was there

  • it depends on your age i think. Presto was a question within the soundscape of music. grunge didn't really hit yet. Presto is like wine you buy, then open it with a hot chick :) years later.

  • Loved em all.

  • I love how Neil doesn't play anything too fancy . . . just lets Alex have it. Great. You can tell how their just totally in sync with each other. Billy's great too.

  • @HugoJCox

Excellent observation. Coulldn't have said it better myself :)

Go Alex Go.......all pedals are yours to enjoy.....

  • Fuck Alex is so amazing. Definately the most underrated guitarist in rock music ever.

  • @paulatreides123 - I agree. I've heard people call his playing sloppy, but he added an organic feel to the robotics of Neil and Geddy, especially between Grace and Presto. One of my faves by far.

  • @paulatreides123 For sure! I call him the "Wandering Guitarist",,,,always exploring and reaching.

  • @paulatreides123 He's good, but I wouldn't say most underrated. Ever heard of Gary Moore?

  • @paulatreides123 he is not underrated, he is veeery well known ;D

  • Amazing! Billy is one STAND-UP-GUY! I am not putting GEDDY down AT ALL. Its RUSH on steroids!! Alex is JUST killing that guitar!!

  • @DenPay : All I have to do is listen to Billy sing background vocals on Mr. Big (or simply listen to Mr. Big, for that matter) to know you are not putting Geddy down. *_*

  • This is amazing!

  • Nice job sound's great and yeah it's going to sound a little bad cause it's a soundcheck.

  • That was a spin on the old blues, very well done!

  • This soundcheck jam sounds way better than anything on Presto.

  • you must be deaf. presto was brilliant

  • No, just didn't care for all but a couple of songs on Presto.

It's just my opinion, but I don't think Rush has done anything "brilliant" since Power Windows. Others disagree, I know. They've done some nice things....but not "brilliant".

  • well i will have to respectfully disagree. for me everything they make is brilliant. i love all their music.

  • Standing alone as well as compared to the shit that comes out now-a-days, Im sorry- Rush is absolutely brilliant.

  • Yeah it is.

  • Billy Sheehan is standing in for Geddy at sound check.... so Billy is playing thru Geddy's bass and amp.

  • The bass sounds muddy?!?! He's playing Geddy's rig. Pay attention man!

  • geddy's rig ? whats that!?

  • Electric toothbrush.

  • his ax

  • You would be very surprised how much sound comes from the hands. Two different guys on the same rig and the sound is different.

  • did billy tour with rush in any way?

  • AWESOME! thanksfor the post.

  • reminds me of an g4 concert.......

  • yup, that sure is a wal, and that sure isnt geddy on it haha

  • Wow!!! What a treat!!! I love You Tube!!

  • The bass sounds a lot muddier than Geddy's.

  • fucking great sound, love this

  • That was 10 minutes of joy.

  • Anyone can download it from Billy Sheehan's website! It's between audio!

  • How i know that this is rush?

  • guitar sounds like it? idk

  • its DEFINITELY lifeson playing lead guitar. the scales, his picking style, and the way he uses the whammy bar are really unique to him.

  • This ROCKS! Man, wish I had heard this years ago. I thought I has heard something else where Sheehan was jamming with Rush, but I don't remember being struck like this.

  • saw them 2nd row and the Knickerbocker in Albany, NY 12/91.... it was incredible to say the least.... pillars of the Artform

  • Alex is a soundcheck genius!

  • Alex Lifeson rocks

  • Dammit! I thought this was gonna be video footage. :(

Oh well. It's still really awesome.

  • Culest thing ever! Didn´t know they were gigging together in 90. Saw them in 92 in the Baltimore area, amazing show, still one of the best I ever saw. Never cared too much for Mr Big, but Sheehan is such a cool and nice guy. Amazing bass player. Thanks for posting this one!!

  • I love the transition at 4:08 and 5:08. This is kick ass!

  • You obviously haven't bothered listening to his records, moron. Just because he knows how to shred doesn't mean he isn't a bass player. Try informing yourself a little better before speaking out of your ass oh-so-ineptly.

  • You speak like a teenager, so I don't know how exactly you played with BS in a band for years. One day you'll grow up and realize what a dummy you were when you were younger. It's alright - many people go through the process.

Why don't you now go listen to some Niacin - BS can groove with the best of them.

  • @godluckyhoward Then you must be the drummer from Talas then right ?

  • yes this 12 bar blues is like that ,round and round we go ,even though Alex is not playing strictly pentatonic

  • That music just makes me want to run around in circles

  • sweet, kinda sounds like victor, his solo cd.....alex better watch his carbs ..lol

  • anyone want to tell me how i might get this converted to an mp3 file. i need this on my ipod

  • Download youtube to mp3 player...its free....

  • hey thanks so much

    really easy to do

  • no probs, your welcome

  • Doesn't really sound like Sheehans tone....more like Geddy's tone on the wal or steinberger bass.

    Does anyone else agree?

And Sheehans bass playing would of involved WAY more shredding...this feels more like Geddy's playing.

  • its geddys bass that hes playing

  • i used to have a copy of live speed on ice on vinyl but i cant find it i must have loaned to someone and never got it back. I like billy and could appricate him but my boy was Steave Harris.

  • Wow, this totally launches the listener into escape velocity.

  • With the exception of Far Cry, this easilly rocks more than anything on Snakes & Arrows.

  • Best way to jam. You can tell its total improv

  • This just shows how incredible NP AL and BS are. Awesome post :-)

  • This is great.

  • that was on my b-day!

  • nice bass break at 3:46

  • Billy is a great bassist. Style wise, i can't see anyone better carrying Geddy's torch.

  • Id say 3:46 is blistering.

  • That is fucking mental!!

  • what a great jam and good pics too. rush to this day one of the best!!

  • not u again, out of your meds a?

  • Yes, it is from the Presto tour....Billys band Mr. Big opened for them during that tour..I got to see the show at Alpine Valley in Wisconsin..both bands were great but of course Rush stole the show ;)

  • I was at Alpine Valley show (2nd night) and got a boot of that concert. Forget it! it's not for sale! :^D

  • spot on waldy - in the presto liner notes mr big get a 'thank you' mention.

  • The date on the title of the video says 1990 so I'd say it was from the 'Presto' tour. Perhaps I should have read the title description first ....eh?......lol

  • Ive got a Wal - the tone is unmistakeable. This is brilliant. Rush will always be the most underrated band in the world. The "dep" bass player's not bad either lol. There arent many who can take Geddy's place. The question is can Mr. Sheehan also sing notes so high they can only be heard by dogs eh?

  • amazing.my fave artists together.thankyou dude.

  • WOW, that had to have been ..... awesome!

  • So, this is from the PRESTO tour or...???

  • Hard to tell.....Geddy used Wal basses on 'Power Windows', 'Hold Your Fire', 'Presto', and 'Roll the Bones' so that could be anywhere between 1985 to 1992.

  • Well, sirs, whoever it is - rocks. This jam is off the hook...and IT'S A SOUND CHECK! Virtuosity personified. Mr. Sheehan is a credit to his craft.

    .

    .

Neil is keeping this train on the tracks and Alex is painting waves while Billy pours on the coals!

    .

    .

Brilliant stuff, guys. Thanks for posting.
