  • Thanks

  • i think that you should stop tattooing just like mohamud ali stopped boxing, the lines were shaky bc either there wasnt enough tension on the needle and or the machine was running to fast. as for shading with color if its a traditional then use black for this off the wall piece, you need to learn under tones of the color you are using,,,,NEVER USE BLACK! as for you beginners start water color classes before you even think about tattoing. hope your days are blessed and better.

  • He makes look more 3d

  • I just got started with my apprenticeship and I dont like my mentors coloring method it seems flat

  • I want some more ink!

  • shakey lines man...

  • those lines look really spotty and jaggy.

  • Thank you very much for this video I'm getting into tattooing and I'd love to have some one on one with a tattoo artist for some tips and tricks contact me at TAC25@ymail.com

  • very helpful sir...keep it up :)

  • what is that liquid he is using?

  • @xRandom4000

its green soap (used to clean the skin from the excessive ink)

  • @xRandom4000 using to do what? They begin with what I believe is green soap. Then he wipes either vasoline or A and D lotion on it. I'd figure it was vasoline but the video doesn't say.

  • great video, helped my shading a ton

  • Good Job

  • nice job

  • big up,nice work old man

  • Big help. appreciate it alot. used this method on a customer, and got great feedback so i had to definitely give you guys the credit. thankyou

  • AWESOME!

  • what size needle is he using?

  • @cja702 6er Flat

  • what was he doing to the needle with the blade?

  • @cja702 a 6 flat shader and he is fanning the tips to get a broader and more defined lay of ink

  • Good job...

  • thanks :)

  • If you are looking up how to tattoo on youtube, do everything they do in the videos. Those of you who point out what's incorrect, STOP GIVING AWAY SECRETS.

  • Thanks

  • Cool, Educational(:

  • Excellent video I'm looking to get into tattooing and very informative.

  • @FilthyInsomniac take an apprenticeship anywhere that will let you. i did jailhouse shit for quite some time and just recently started apprenticing. it's more so to teach habits that save time money and effort, but there is a lot of structure to more detailed tattoos that only a pro would know and be able to show

  • Over 40 years of tattooing and still didn't learn to put a bag over a spray bottle??? And not to mention poor choppy lines...

  • @sloba111 yeah so what? the world changes over the years.. 40 years ago was youtube even an idea... and you made your own needels then to, crying out loud..

  • @hardcoredubby So what? I've soldered my own needles for 15+ years, till about 6-7 years ago, but I've ALWAYS used protective barriers. It's just common sense talking to you to use it. And this video obviously was taken in the age after out brake of AIDS and other nasty diseases. It's NOT filmed 40 or 60 or 80 years ago. And what does preventing cross contamination has to do with youtube?

  • One of the good videos on youtube for tattooing, good job.

  • hahaha so good

  • I am learning and this video was really helpful, thanks.

  • I really appreciate you taking the time to show others your techniques. Very informative. Thank you

  • Very informative and helpful (:

  • i just started tattooing and this was some good information and well explained thank u for posting this

  • I found this video extremely informative. Thanks for posting it.

  • I would be interested for your feedback, experience, on the work I have done on myself. I have one knee high sock and working on the other. I would luke someone, not family, to tell me if im wasting my time or if I have the talent to continue. Please email response to verdabice@ymail.com from one artist to another and a minute of your time pls.

  • I have been an artist since I was 8 years old. I was doing landscapes and animals when I had to stop drawing and people when I picked it back up again. I didn't think I was good enough so every went to the trash. I realized I was good enough to sell when I turned 40. A friend gave me a tattoo machine and that's when I knew what I wanted to do. I have tried to get people to teach me but all they want to do is bitch. I want thank you fir your instruction. Old school is always best I think.

  • I counted over 5 health violations, in the first min of this video... shameful, all of his tools are contaminated, USE barrier film !!!!

PRO TIP: learning techniques off youtube, will only teach you these old guys bad habits

  • @jessetattoo haha i was thinking the same thing. but then we he said he was old school i understood hahah

  • dude, you are amazing, great way of explaining how to tattoo for beginners! great job by your father. it really help a whole lot.

  • this tat was very good i wanted to see if u would show a full tattoo being done like outline n all plz n ty btw tht guy very good at shading learned alot from it never shaded alot n now i did at tat with these tips n the person was very happy ty again post more up plz

  • i don't know what would make me cringe more, the needle or your voice

  • This guy sucks. Old school my ass. Its shutting shading. And a shitty technique. Im a pro Tattoo artist. My shading technique is much more effective than this crap!

  • m8 dont listen to all the envious dicks who wish they could do a tattoo like that its a gd vid to learn from and a gd tattoo hope to see some more asap

  • haters

  • There is no cross contamination if he has other spray bottles and sanitizes them between clients. Plastic bags are better used for lower budget artists. Sometimes the camera doesnt do justice to tat outlines.

  • @GlitteredGeek123 so y is it all tattoo artist on tv use the bags? low budget i think not

  • I feel like I should know this, but also feel stupid for asking this when it kinda of relates to tattooing but does anyone know what the paper is called for putting the tattoo on before selling your art?for tattooing

  • @AliciaCrackerDawn Carbon paper

  • laughing at the people who are talking shit, this man is a legend. he could never do another tattoo in his life and still die one of the greats.

  • how stupid u must be to think you are "learning" from this subnormal!! with only 20 secs watching this u can see this " tattoo legend" cant even use a freaking plastic bag to protect his water bottle... ( ever heaard about cross-contamination ) not even talk about the horrible design and disgusting outline... please guys! take this shit off

  • ive only been tattooing for 4 years and my line work looks better that that and green soap is like the worst thing to use on tattoos cause u can give someone a cemical burn

  • @tat2devil08 you obviously apprenticed under someone not knowing what they are doing. Green Soap is the most popular amongst artists.

  • Where are the bags on his spray bottles???? Disgusting!!!! Can we say cross contamination?????

  • AHHHH ok so you want to shade first then all colors

  • Finish product looked good but Sorry Jim you still need work on your lining.

  • @Ragtan06 doesn't matter how your lining looks if you give a good end product. in this kind of tattoo you dont need to worry about outline so much

  • @RoseMcLone Your strong point of any tattoo that has a black outline is their line work... if you have shitty line work, regardless of how good your shading is it will not look good. His linework was not bad but could have been better.

  • nice vid...very helpful..thanx

  • Best instructional vid on shading I have found so far, Thanx

  • Do you have to change the settings on a tattoo machine when using liner/shader? or can you use the same setting and just change the needle?

  • THANKS bro ...... I really appreciate this

  • thanks very much -- I really appreciate this. Without having just one mentor, I'm inundated with conflicting opinions by numerous, so combining general consensus with how my own tendencies are more like certain, particular individuals, I better begin to bring out the best of my abilities and go with what works for me bets rather than breaking my arm backwards to reinvent the wheel just because someone else says something's right. Only through the generosity of folks like you posting tutorials.

  • cheers 4 uploading the vid..im sprouting and its good to learn like this :)

  • very informative, if u could put more videos of shading and coloring techniques on ur channel that would be helpful. If you could post a video of different types of needles and the techniques used with those needles would be helpful aswell. One more thing to possible add would be something on inks good ones bad ones ect. Thanks for the informative channel really dig it.

  • Yes this vid. Very helpful, imma new artist. Drawing since a was 5..I'm 31 now only been tattooing for 4 months but it has come very naturally

  • mean vid bro...... awsumm tipz ..neat wurk :)

  • 2:38 "Jim notices one of his lines are light" when does he notice all of his lines are shaky and that his design sucks?

  • u look like ur on meth!

  • 44 yeh and she blows ya for a free tat old guy ur done old played out but well ur not too bad but old and only the fosters want it

  • THIS IS NOT GOOD-TOUCHING THE MACHINE WITH INFECTED FINGER-COME ON MAN!

  • 43 PLUS YEARS AND STILL CAN'T PULL A GOOD LINE-SAD!

  • Love it, thank you! VERY informative and just what i was looking for. Thank you guys.

  • Scratching is moving up and down on a single line and not being able to do a good outline because of the scratched in look. So how do you know if everyone is a scratcher fool???

  • all you fools are scratchers

  • This is great. Thanks for posting. I found this video very informative as a new artist in the industry. I look forward to watching more.

  • the out line is not horrible looks good

  • but question i jus have a bad perception on were exactly to put the shading any help?

  • surferjoe i think the old school mate is the best,he is a pro.

  • big jim is the best

  • First off it's better to use a squirt bottle and I didnt asee any type of cross contamination prevention, you should of had that spray bottle covered with some type of plastic unless you autoclaavvee it every time but that would be a lot of extra work for nothing, and that seemed hella dirty, ps outline suckls

  • Surprise! ! Incredible tattoo website: tat.nn.cx

  • What do you think about those on line starter kits ? I'm thinking about investing in one.

  • @scubadude72060 i have one its actually very good

  • I like that whip shading.

  • hello

    I like your explication

can you recommend me for a linner machin? good and not expensive

    thank you:)

  • @dorisbeauty55 micky sharpz micro dial liner.i found it real nice.never had i problem with it

  • Nice job and thank for the help you gave me on shading

  • if he slowed that machine down he wouldnt have to go so fast and the shading wouldnt come out so dark...

  • i liked this video good close ups and explanations through the vid I just started a few months ago so thnx for the tips

  • THANK U 4 THE TIPS....

  • 2:28 pop that zit!

  • Thanks jus started tattooing & this rely helped, thanks & good job

  • keep your info to yourself ppl like you who screwed the industry!

  • @Iloveyou13610 people are gonna tattoo no matter wat. poor or no information is wat will fuck up the undustry

  • Yes indeed , horrible line's and that man's tattooing for how long???? Trow the tattoo machine in the garbitch can, because after al these jears , outline 's like its don trough a litle 3 jears old girl with pink sox!!

  • Great info for beginner tattoo artist. Wish I had this 9 year's ago.

  • Choppy outlines, however, the voiceover / comments are informative.

  • The shading here seems very uneven. The artist uses short sharp stabbing motions which are inaccurate and seem to put down far too much ink. I personally wouldn't be at all happy with the standard of this work.

  • THANX LADZ...just startin out & found this very useful & easy to understand!!!

  • terrible work and no sterile technique ,plastic tubes from china, no bags on machine or clip cord ,,, and wear a mask .ever heard of M R S A

  • @Candice200769BODYCO r u fing serious i would prefer plastic disposable tubes and needles over ones u have to steralize.. and just so u know MRSA is on everyone it deoends on the person if MRSA is going to be a problem or not... if u are not a tattoo artist then u cant say anything about his style.

  • great video! I worked as a tattoo artist for 2 years in Ca. , then I took 3 years off for traveling and relocating to Europe. I recently got hired in a studio again, so I have been watching your videos to kind of refresh my memory. Not only am I refreshing my memory, but Im learning new things as well. Im stoked to get back into the studio, thanks for the awesome vid!!

  • i dont mean to sound rude, but i am tattooist in a shop and just have a question about something said.... in the video you say the artist is using back strokes to shade, why wouldn't you recommend this to newer artists? when using back stroke motions to shade you're not pushing ink as much into the skin so the area being shaded would be drastically lighter allowing a newer artist to make multiple passes if need be..... again not to sound rude just curious and always willing to hear new ideas

  • nice work...love the flower..

  • Thanks for the tip's .. this vid is amazingly helpful .. :D

  • to me this is a good video as a beginner this would help me to use a flat needle

  • no offence, but the outline is horrible,,,

  • @leo148811 whats wrong with it i really want to know im an apprentice

  • @leo148811 foreeals blowouts nd shit

  • very informative. you asked for some criticism and i cant think of any other than that a&d works great to moisturize but it can draw the ink out of the skin just slightly. not necessarily a bad thing for an artist that charges for touch ups though ;)

  • @pancakebot yea A&D is not the way to go i would use tattoo Goo or another tattoo ointment .. if u must use something other than that use Bag Balm wont draw out color it holds in the moisture

  • Excellent video. I've been tattooing for twenty years, it's nice to see someone with enough love for the art to share information. You touch on some very good insider tips, and to one with a keen eye, many technique tips cans be learned by watching this man's moves closely. The video on a whole was very informative and relaxing to watch. The knowledge, wisdom, and most important, love for the art from both the artist and the narrator are quite obvious. Thanks, and please make more!

  • AWESOME! Just ordered a kit, (I know) but I am super excited!! Made my first machine out of a friggn window fan 17 years ago, still got a pretty decent tat I must say so I cant wait for the real thing!

  • @deadstrings77 lol thats some ghetto ass shit, i refused to ink until i got a real machine and some experience

  • kiaora bro mean maori mean that how you do it hahaha

  • Good technique and explaining of needle depth ... Also wut not to do really good video and really cool lotus

  • THATS HOMEBOY FROM SONS OF ANARCHY!!!!!!!!!!

  • Great vid. Im a new artist and this was really helpful...question, if you use a mag instead of s straight shader can you still fan the needles out with a blade or is that not recommended?thx.

    Trevor Grijalva

  • Thanks for the piece of shit video... Tattooing 43 years and still can't do a clean outline? Call it a day, homie! Please stop ruining peoples lives and posting the videos on youtube. You're only encouraging more losers to take up tattooing as a "hobby"..... Muerete, Viejo!

  • question. why do sometimes when I'm shading, the needles will get stuck in the skin if i stroke the machine with the needles facing outward?

Plus i notice that unless i run my volts high, the needles won't really penetrate the skin as well.

  • @valleystylez1 you gotta adjust it

  • Muerete!

  • I am an apprentice tattooist and want to learn everything I can to be a great tattoo artist this video was very helpful to me in learning to shade. Thank you for posting this, I learned a lot.

  • You can put dark tones after you color, watch the reiventing of tattoo of Guy aitckson,

I sometimes start of mid tones, then I put dark, I just take care to don't dirty the ligth tones, black, dark green, dark blue, are easy to dirty the opened skin, and the more important, always clean the tattoo, ligth tones can dirty the tattoo too, white is good to dirty black and dark tones, leaving the tattoo with bad apperence,

PS: old school tattoo need a pure black on shade (1o shading) to color

  • Dude some better line work pls... end up ok,, but pls if i tattoo like this aften 10 years, pls ask me to stop, but thanks for share...

  • 42 years of tattooing crappy !!!!!!

  • dang now i know how to shade in tattoos cuz my brother n everyone says i do it wrong but it comes out prettie good...

  • thanks for the tips. i'm a new to tattooing, and pick up on some very helpful tricks

  • NICE TUTORIAL IM LEARNING I HAVE AN ART DEGREE AND I LIKE METAL MUSIC SO I THINK IT WOULD BE A GOOD JOB FOR ME

SO YOUVE GOT THE BLACK THEN FLICKING IT INTO SHADE SAY YOU WANTED ONLY THE FINE SHADE WITHOUT GREY WASH WHAT IS THE TECHNIQUE

  • what shading needles do u recomend r better , round shaders or 15 magnum kus i have a 15 mag n wanted to know if i can improve

  • Great vid, nice work

  • thanks for the tips man, i am doing good already its just the shading that is killing me!!

  • People, you can't learn to tattoo from youtube. GET AN APPRENTICESHIP.

P.S. this guy might be old school, but his methods are outdated. Fanning a flat rips up the skin at the edges & works it over QUICK, also no barrier protection on his spray bottle, CROSS CONTAMINATION! his lines are shaky & uneven, bad corner meets, etc

  • @Jawzz88 if you cant learn from youtube then why are you watching a how to video?? they dont learn from youtube they learn from watching examples on youtube then trying them on theirselves or other simple minded practice victims. apprenticeships arent easy to find at all either they're $5,000 to $10,000, or for some reason artists think they're fucking gods and think they have a duty to keep tattooing a secret. this is an old video so im sure he's changed his methods

  • @LegacyTattoos We don't think we're gods, but we do want to keep it exclusive. It isn't a job, it's a lifestyle, and people that take it seriously should keep looking for that apprenticeship. Also, a truly talented artist will probably not have to pay $5,000. I showed my portfolio of art & got an apprenticeship (normally $5,000) for only $1,000. A small price compared to what you would pay for college learning another trade. I am on here to dissuade others from 'learning' from youtube's bad info

  • @Jawzz88 i wasnt saying that they shouldnt get apprenticeships its just that these videos are helpful because its good to have at least a little knowledge about what you're going to get yourself into when tattooing. i totally agree with what you're saying i just get pissed because i worked very hard for my apprenticeship so i know how it is for scratchers and DIY tattooists, so when people come on and tell others to get an apprenticeship it kinda ticks me off because its not that easy

  • @Jawzz88 p.s youre totally right about the fanning part they make special needles now that i get from elementtattoosupply[dot]com they go by loose, tight or regular check 'em out

  • @LegacyTattoos yeah I know, I tried to get an apprenticeship for 3 years in two different cities (1 of them chicago) before I found someone willing and qualified. I use regular 7, 9, and 15 mags, 5 and 8 rounds, ocassionally an 11mag bugpin or a tight 7 liner. Overall I can do most any tattoo with a tight 5 liner and a regular 9 mag. I also learned how to solder my own needles if I ever just need to whip up an off-the-wall grouping..

  • @Jawzz88 hell yeah i solder my own too sometimes because my mentor is really old so he use to have to do it and he lets me use his equipment i make horrible needles though. i line all my own tattoos with a tight 7 or if im doing new school to give it depth i use a 7 on the parts that are closer looking and a tight 5 on the parts that i want to look farther away, i bought some crazy mags the other day from element i think they're curved 25 i dont even have tips big enough for them

  • very cool video

  • Thanks we all learned something. Old School heck yea

  • very good video helps me alot followed your fathers tips and i did a realy nice tattoo on my wife.

  • It's NICE WATCHING SOMEONE WHO KNOWS WHAT THEIR DOING !

  • very cool and informative video, thx!

  • AWESOME VIDEO

I am a beginning tattoo artist and apprentice.. I have been tattooing for 3 years prior and till recetly been looking to be an apprentice.. I found a place in Akron Ohio called Assassin Tattoos.. I have actually used the shading method with pulling the needle away from the flat of the tube.. I actually have better results that way but of course as an apprentice Im trying to forget what I think I know Cant wait to see more and new videos..

  • Excellent video to watch for a beginner

  • i like this vid.....i saw this before i saw skin.......

  • Thank you very great work from Jim

  • It's good to see he is taking his time.........i can tell he loves his job. That's what it's all about.......Good artwork and good video...Keep it up............

  • Great video! You make some very good points and explain things well. :o)

  • lotus :))

  • what is it though? a flower?

  • i seriously cant wait to get my tattoo machine =]

  • @Epicjowzzyy haha I Just ordered one to I'm soo excited !!!

  • your rock!!

  • i like it, the only problem i have is i shade on a slant, so the needle isnt driect to the skin its on an angle is u get me, but for a oldish dood he got some skill well done pal

  • @tomseddon1 "oldish dudes" have the most experience ;o)

  • How many volts is it at? im just starting and i can never really seem to get my voltage right with how tight i make the needle

  • Loved the video, Thanks so much <3
