Constant & longer ads, pathetically crap enforced profile design, limits now of one comment per page, constantly having to type "wbiehwf" whenever one wants to post a simple comment (even on OWN profile!), and a *massive* number of annoying bugs that have been around for ages and they don't seem to care about fixing.... we need another video host website.
Youtube must hire their programmers from the local methadone-clinic, OR the management is incompetent.
You might want to use certificates for S/MIME as verifications. Or give out ones of your own, for lower classes.
Then we could use different classes of certificates, like call 3 only for email, class 2 for persons and class 1 for companies and celeberties that really want to be carefull with their trade marks.
And best of all, we could have email in gMail that we all could start to trust, and not like now when it is so easy to get email from santa clause or president nixon.
It seems to me, if my business has been verified for quite some time on Google Place, that it should be tied to "Verified Business" that's an idea. :)
They need to roll this out for regular users, it would be as simple as Amazon does it, you could just verify with a credit card that's in your name... limiting only to celebrities and public figures limits those who are starting a name for themselves from also being able to ensure their new followers of their identity.
So, a two-tiered Internet? The "decent" folk who can register their name (because they belong to an uncontroversial segment of where ever they come from) and the "bad" people who want to remain anonymous?
What if you have good reason to use a real-name-sounding alias? Another way to use this then will be to easily filter out those who prefer not to use their real name, whether or not their alias sounds legit.
Much easier for China to tell which names are real, and which need a closer look ;)
Is google really going to roll out videos of all their features? What about those of us who cannot hear the audio (for whatever reason, up to & including being deaf)? Are we deaf people supposed to stay off G+ or what? If there's written policy corresponding to these videos, then please include the links in the summary section.
With all the negative publicity they are receiving in the press... this process needs more attention than just celebrities
I can be quoted here in a recent CNET Article as saying:
"Though I think Google + is a welcome addition to the many services Google provides, it is now long overdue that they reconsider some of their policies relative to real name vs. 'nyms usage."
I fear this may not be a compromise to the "common name" policy, but actually another step to enforce it. "Either verify your account or it will be suspended/ removed" (like they're doing just now).
What ever changes you make Google, please do the right thing & let us use our pseudonyms if we want to!
Overall the concept is good. One profile for each person rather than the clutter of 100s of fake profiles on YT. Behind an honest profile on YT there is a real person with a name etc. It is simply a variation on the manner in which the Net was founded long before Google. Hope they will stick to the policy as it grows. Otherwise we will endure another "spam-a-lot" or a false "flag-a-lot" bot.
@ThisBoyTV Actually it's a terrible idea. How do you expect people to use the site who are marginalised populations, like LGBT youth, victims of abuse, political activists?
Do you think Syrians or Libyans want "Verified by Google"? No, they want the ability to communicate safely.
Me? I want the ability to control my own identity. Even if that means having two, when it is necessary. That's my business. That's my choice. No one, least of all Google, should be telling me otherwise.
It becomes a matter of choice and I do understand what u r saying. Every time a company releases a product do u buy it? Google is releasing a new social networking site that may not be for every person. There are many websites that require an open verified identification. Some are by invitation only & have 10s of millions of people on them.
It is a great idea to know the person u r communicating with has 1 profile rather than a 100 attack profiles.
@ThisBoyTV It's not simply a matter of choice. Firstly, to tell me that you have the right to control my identity is offensive, generally. Secondly (out of order), I challenge you to list successful websites that require open verified identification, or are "by invitation only" with "millions of people on them" except G+, which doesn't count because "150 invites" is not "invitation only"
I read all your messages and will respond once. Linkedin is a very popular site for business people to connect with each other. 120 million users since 2002 as invitation only. When people stop listening to all the Google propaganda they will discover the "real" Internet. Google search gives u what they want u to c...their stuff.
That is what I mean when I say it is a matter of making a choice. Google+ is an attempt to keep YT users from going elsewhere... which they are doing.
@ThisBoyTV Thirdly, it is a pipe dream, a fantasy; *you do not, and never will know* whether someone is lying to you. I could go by the name Bob Balow, Vic Gundotra or Rob Schneider and I would appear to be legitimate, however I would not. Those names would all be lies, and Google does not prevent that. It's not a "real name" policy so much as a "looks-real name" policy. And you know what? Then illusion of safety is more dangerous.
@ThisBoyTV What's also dangerous is how this marginalizes the vulnerable rather than supporting them. Take political activists in countries such as Syria or (until recently?) Libya, or closeted LGBT youth. They are unable to even attempt basic privacy for their own safety. This pretents all vulnerable groups from communicating in G+ safely. To what advantage? Again, to maintain a fantasy. Google is telling these people "You do not matter. Your safety does not matter. Go elsewhere."
@ThisBoyTV Also keep in mind that this policy forces your adherence not just for G+ but for Picasa, Google Reader (a popular web feed aggregator) as well.
Alternative name = pseudonym. If they allow pseudonyms to be "verified", then they have to allow it for everyone and not for only a bunch of dumbshit "celebrities".
Name certification is mandatory when it comes to famous people and celebrity. I don't even see why people would complain about this feature, except for the sake of complaining, like babies and senile people cry.
Thank you. This will help me figure out who not to add. Anybody who goes along with your 'verified identity' scheme is likely not someone who I'm going to be interested in talking to. Sorry, but this verification business does not help me 'feel safe'. In fact, it does very much the opposite.
@rovert13 they verify using credit card amongst other things. So that's fine, you and your cousin will be verified.... but this isn't even for ordinary people just yet, it's only for famous people, celebrities really...
@koya25555 in Buzz, Google "offered" a way to get verified by credit card (your "verified" name had to match that on the card). A person could link their Gmail username with Google's knol site. This site offered a name verification process with Google, and we had green check marks back in February 2010.
I was able to verify my legal name via a credit card, but when I tried to use Steve instead of Stephen, it broke. I fixed that by supplying my ssn for an deeper check.
@synb0t They dont have businesses because they are going in a different direction. Businesses, bands, etc are getting their own section of google+. Finding people is perfectly easy. Wtf music??? Who gives a shit if there is music? Every computer on the planet has a media player and can multitask. Put that information to use.
This could be Google's answer to the "common name" controversy. Meaning you're free to choose any name but if it's a pseudonym it won't show as verified, which is a reasonable compromise. If that's what this is, it's the right move.
@traceyatyou My thought exactly. Let people use nicknames rather than their real names if they so desire, & this "verified" feature can be an optional step. Allowing people to make their own decisions will shield Google from the rather significant negative back lash that they're currently experiencing. It's very much the right business decision.
I've never used a nickname on Facebook or other such sites, but in the many years I've used these sites it's never been an issue interacting w/ others.

Google+ sucks ass. I deleted my profile. No music, Privacy controls are assanine (People can just add you to their circles?!?), Finding people is like running your genitals up and down a cheese grater, and businesses, bands, and other groups can't technically join without violating the "real names" rule? Lame. Google+ could be great, but the G+ team needs to shake off the arrogance and add a lot more features or this will go the way of Buzz, and the Nexus One.
You obviously don't understand the concept of circles. Sure, anyone can add you to their circles. That doesn't mean they can see everything you post. Twitter did just fine with people following whoever they wanted.
I haven't had an issue at all finding people so I'm not sure what you're issue is. They're already working on having businesses on there, I'm sure this verification program will aid in that. But if you really have such a problem with it, I suppose you always have facebook.
I can see this as an invaluable benefit over some social networks that have dozens of pages with no way to tell who the real person is that you're looking for.
It's also beneficial to folks who might need/want to protect their personal brand, or just prevent others from masquerading and saying damaging things while claiming to be that person.
I keep expecting Google to wake up, but it keeps getting worse!
"We have a bias in favor of people's right to free expression in everything we do. We are driven by a belief that more information generally means more choice, more freedom and ultimately more power for the individual. We believe that it is important for free expression that people have the right to remain anonymous if they choose." -- Rachel Whetstone, Google Vice President of Global Communications & Public Affairs, April 2009
It comes off as a little elitist. Even in social media there is class structures and celebrities are at the top of the class food chain. I mean, my family needs to know that I am who I claim to be when I add them to my circle.
Interesting but why start with celebrities? Why not reward the loyal users who have used Google Profile now Google+ for years. Lets hope it does not stall like the Twitter verification did.
