Manannan hangs around longer if you mess around and get assigned extra chores. In this case it's because you bothered him in the study and had to re-sweep the kitchen.

Being friends with the chickens would be a bit macabre, considering Gwydion has to slaughter and cook them periodically, one would assume.

It's really too bad he doesn't give you the task of chopping wood. Then Gwydion could just use the axe to behead Manannan. Manannan would die pretty quickly if beheaded.
