very cool that i got my drivers licence on the 130th anniversary of this fight at the same time. o and the fight did last 30 seconds and in the real fight Virgil, Morgan and Doc Holliday got shot, Wyatt was the only one who wasn't harmed
For sixguns with five rounds at a time there sure was a lot of gunfire....Holiday fanning the hammer for a fusillade? I've heard for decades that the weapons of the time were well machined, but the black powder was not consistent. As for Earp, does anyone recall actor Hugh O'Brien playing him on tv decades ago? O'Brien was a very young marine DI during WWII and he married for the first time at 81 a few yrs ago.
@jcleaverchamberlinjr what is TB ? A tuberculosis ? I guess most of gamblers liked to run out from fights, so this doc is someone really astonishing. He's still one of the biggest legends of the West, no wonder why.
As for the gun fight, yea, this was depicting a real "Stand up fight", and not at all easy...unlike the ease of a double action, the pistols that were used during that time were single action, you have to cock the hammer first before you can pull the trigger in order to fire it. It took coordination and experience to fire one in rapid succession using one hand. An inexperienced gun toter would've been dead meat way before he could even pull off one round in such a fight.
Wyatt sure threw it in Behan's face when he said to him, "I don't think I'll let you arrest us today, Behan."
Behan should have been assisting them, but because he was a friend and leader to the Cowboys, he sure as was not a good person at all, especially with using the law in an illegal way.
Agreed. Watching this movie depicts how things are even today, that threatening bullies can come in, take over an establishment, and put everyone there, even the law itself, in a choke hold by fear and intimidation. Thus, they submit to all their biddings. It had to take those who are trying to escape to a better life, to make things right. Seen this happen many times before in real life, majority good endings, but with sacrifices also.
Great ending to an awesome gun fight... Wyatt looks over to his friend, Doc over yonder, acknowledges with a nod, and then both walk off together... justice... wild western style...
have a look at about 1.14. i picked this up on my dvd ages ago but have just come across this. doc holliday has the three shot side by side double barrell gun in existence. count the shots
@ the1:28 seconds of this video Wyatt Earp tell Ike"Fights commence. Get to fighting or get away" Can someone explain what fights commence mean ?? was a rule for fighting?? I googled it and didnt find anything. Or if he didnt say "fights commence" what did he say
@MrCholoxl32 In my opinion he siad that the fight commence meant the fight has started, if ike did not want to be part of the fight and be shot he should leave!!! I dont think it was a wild west terminology!! Basically his gun was not drawn at the time!!
@slauj I think its supposed to be two different camera angles on the same shotgun blast....kinda like instant replay or something, for dramatic effect.
@NavySEALxRay Very true. Interesting fact about Tombstone. It's basically filled with stars from James Cameron movies. Stephen Lange, from Avatar is one. And let's not forget Billy Zane who stared in Titanic.......with Bill Paxton. I just watched the movie last week and noticed that. It was weird.

@cpaterson0988 They all used black powder and yet it is clear as a bell in this firefight! Agree more rds than a semi-auto! Wonder later on, say by 1915 or so if Wyatt ever had a chance to shoot the Colt .45 semi-auto and if so, what was his thoughts of it?
@tentheagle, I've seen this same thing asked several times. But, if you watch closely after the second shot the victim is falling to the ground, so unless he gotten back up the third shot is suppose to be a different angle view of the second shot, although poorly done as the his arms are in a similar but different position.

Interesting debate about who shot first, and who carried which gun(s). Many who have posted here have done some reading and research. That's good. Me, too. I am half-way through Steven Lubet's book, "Murder in Tombstone: The Forgotten Trial of Wyatt Earp." I have posted comments below based on my previous research, and what I am learning from Lubet's examination of the witness testimony at the Coroner's Inquest and the subsequent pre-trial hearing following the arrest of the Earps and Doc.
Did anyone notice Doc's shotgun? Was it just me or did three shots come out of it? How do you get THREE shotsout of a DOUBLE barrel shotgun without a tedious reloading procedure? Just asking!
@MACKINBLAK2896 a shotgun fired right at your side, supposing you were a horse, would scare you a lot more than six-shooters fired at a distance. you ever heard a 12 gauge firing?
@MACKINBLAK2896 And so? Does that prevents the horse from being scared by it? And even if it did, you can very well suppose the horse was a new or touchy one. Why do people like you keep trying to point/find/create mistakes of no importance in good movies?
@TheJoker4747 Nah. There are far too many reports that differ but the most believable one id that Holiday walked up with a shotgun and shot Clayton in the gut. He wanted to die with his boots on remember, what better way than to cause a massive bullet fest!
@richieblackhearted i have read 4 books about Doc and one about Wyatt. Of course there are many difrent reports but most people said Wyatt and Billy shot firs almost at the same time.
@TheJoker4747 Most isnt always accurate. I am talking about the most credibale. Holiday with a shotgun? A dueler carrying an assault weapon? Things make sense my way. I doubt Earp would have shot first given his "peace keeper" status, not with all the witnesses. Reports are not always accurate, and I say Holiday shot first.
@richieblackhearted but holliday was not very comfortable with a shotgun. he had tuberculosis and was very thin the blowback could have knocked him on his ass, so to speak. from whalt i have read ist not likely that doc shot firs.
@TheJoker4747 Youve just made my point for me! Why would frail man, a legendary gunslinger i might add, choose to take a shotgun to a gunfight? Two reasons. He was either never planing to use it or use it just once.
@TheJoker4747 Thats ridiculous. "Hey everyone, lets go to what could turn into a gunfight. I know, lets give the greatest crack shot in our party a conceiled weapon that he will probably only be able to shoot once before his lungs collapse"
@richieblackhearted well i dont know what to say the sources tell it that way. Virgil did not want to provoke a gun fight. So he gave the shotgun to doc so the Cowboys would net see it right away.
@TheJoker4747 You do realise this was in the days when people wore hip holsters as a matter of discorse? It was almost obligatory for a man to carry a weapon.
I also disagree that there was no provocation intended. Why go mob handed? Why enlist an even then legendary gunfighter to assist in the arrest. Why give the best shot in your party a "one shot only" token weapon?
@richieblackhearted Virgil Earp at the time was the Town Marshall. The night before Ike Clanton was drunk and telling everyone that he was going to kill Holliday and the Earps the first chance he got. In the town of Tombstone at that time there was a ban on carrying guns within the city limits. With the ban, and the threats Virgil decided that he should disarm the men. Several witnesses told him that they were all armed and he wanted to be protected. Before heading for the cowboys Virgil
@richieblackhearted actually deputized his brother and Holliday so that they were able to go with the law on their sides. As Joker said Virgil gave the shotgun to Doc because of his long coat and took Doc's cane as a sign that he only wanted to peacefully disarm the men. He had no intention of starting a gunfight and neither did anyone in his party. Doc only went because his only friends were the Earps and he had partly caused an uproar with an argument the night before with Ike Clanton that
Unlike what the film depicts Holliday did not go out into the vacant lot with the shotgun visible.
The first shots were fired by Wyatt and Billy Clanton. Doc's first and only shot with the shotgun could not have been the first shot of the gunfight. It is well recorded that Tom McLaury died from a shotgun blast just under his armpit. This shot came later in the fight as he was reaching for a gun on his horse and the horse moved away because
@richieblackhearted of the sound of gunfire. Therefore your assumptions that Doc was the first to fire does not hold up when you look at the evidence. If you want to learn more about what actually happened read Casey Tefertiller's book Wyatt Earp: The Life Behind the Legend. He gives the most accurate account of what happened and if you take your time and do your research you will find that you are mistaken in your assumptions.
@richieblackhearted some say the earps used their trousers and coats pockets and waistbands of their trousers the day of the gunfight with tthe clantons
@TheJoker4747 This is redundant anyhow. Holiday knew he was terminal before the gunfight but lived for some considerable time after. He frequented many bars before his illness took his life. This again was in the hope that he would be involved in a fight that would take his life. His notoriety was so great he recieved no challenges despite his own provocations. In fact during his later years he killed more onlookers than opponents because his firing was so fast but his aim poor.
@richieblackhearted yes youre are right about he was terminal, but at the time he was in Tombstone his tuberculosis was under control. otherwise he couldnt have gone with Wyatt on the Vendetta Ride. Youre are right about his aim, he had lousy aim. He was fast on the draw many people say he was as fast as Wild Bill. But he never killed onlookers. Doc never shot anybody who was not armed and aware of Docs intentions
@richieblackhearted It is recognized through research of the coroner's report and inquiry, as well as the testimony during Judge Spicer's inquiry as a pre-lim to possible trial, that Doc carried the shotgun, concealed in his long coat. Testimony differed somewhat as to who fired first, but most are now agreed that Doc and Billy fired almost simultaneously. What we also know is that Doc did not fire three shells (as depicted in this scene) from Virgil's shotgun. Only two.
aye but what should be debated was did doc and the earps intend to kill billy and the others when they went there (it may have been a possibility in their minds) but doc was hiding the shotgun, and wyatt wasn't a fool a man like him could outgun any of the clantons, so going there to disarm the cowboys is different from if they went there to end the cowboys threats to them by lethal force hooded by the law. that's murder and should have been concidered. (i have different sources)
@MAnnaconduit1 Agree that The Cowboys and Earps were not friends. Many of us who have posted here are well-read on the Tombstone days, before, during, and after the gunfight. The Earps' motives; who shot first; why were those Cowboys there and with what intentions.....all subject to conjectutre based on the surviving records. The Vendetta Ride was just that....revenge. To justify or comdemn it today makes for good conversation. Beyond that, do any of us know what we would have done back then?
personally i think i would have gone after them, but i would have follwoed the law (wyatt went beyond the law) and yes to talk about it today is pointlessbeyond a good conversation. however it urks me that so many people look up to a man who instead of follwoing the law which he defended and made his name off of went agaisnt its intrests for persoanl reasons. though losing a brother and seeing the other crippled could be hard, what he beleived matters only to him.
@MAnnaconduit1 When you have people who are in the law like Behan defending them it can be hard to actually get to them legally especially back in those times.
@richieblackhearted Please see my reply to richieblackhearted below. Virgil carried Doc's cane, and Doc concealed the borrowed shotgun that Virgil was holding prior to the walk over to Fly's. The gunfight took place in the vacant lot at that location. Dennis Quaid (as Doc in "Wyatt Earp") actually does a better job of what witnesses testified to with regard the concealing of the shotgun.
i love it when these people who like these gay facts try to ruin the cinama western culture idc if he was a bandit cuz acualy i own a documentary and i believe wyatt earp was a sherrif
ddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddd alright gunfight, sorry this comment was a waste of time! lol
The REAL Gunfight at the OK Corral was mass murder - Wyett Earp was a killer, horse thief, stagecoach robber and a liar, and the Earp gang were just as bad as the Clanton gang, all either criminals or killers. The OK Corral gunfight was over a dispute involving a Stagecoach robbery. Clantons was about to leave town when they were attacked. Clai of Clanton fled, Doc blown Ike Clanton and the rest were gunned down even after they gave up. Only Earps fired any shots.
@TheVoiceOfReason93 fuck u asshole learn your history before just blurting horse shit out it was over the clanton gangs robberies and murders and in reality the clantons did open fire 30 shots were fired and ik the erps cant fire 30 rounds with 6 shooters learn your histroy before being an ass
The only thing that is historically incorrect about this, is that History said that Holliday was grazed in the hip during the fight. So only Wyatt escaped without injuries. Everything else is pretty much 100% correct. Wel

@PapagenoJuan2 It's easy when you're carrying four pistols.
RobertWaltz 1 year ago
I think when Val Kilmer had the Single Action Army and the Colt Lightning out, he just held down the trigger and pulled the hammer.
MACKINBLAK2896 1 year ago
@MACKINBLAK2896 Agreed. If anyone could do that with any accuracy or efficiency, it would have been Doc Holliday.
RobertWaltz 1 year ago
love when doc fans the six shooter.
almightywitey 1 year ago
Did anyone notice Doc's shotgun? Was it just me or did three shots come out of it? How do you get THREE shotsout of a DOUBLE barrel shotgun without a tedious reloading procedure? Just asking!
CulhandS65 1 year ago
No, Doc didnt care anymore. He was dying of a terminal illness. Killing him would have been euthenasia; doing him a favor. Just like Bill Hickock.
CulhandS65 1 year ago
When Doc Holliday fires the shotgun in the air, the horse wouldn't have moved. At least 10 shots had already been fired.
MACKINBLAK2896 1 year ago
@MACKINBLAK2896 a shotgun fired right at your side, supposing you were a horse, would scare you a lot more than six-shooters fired at a distance. you ever heard a 12 gauge firing?
beckerqueiroz 1 year ago
@beckerqueiroz Yes, I've fired one. Plus the Clanton gang has robbed stagecoaches, so the horse has heard a shotgun.
MACKINBLAK2896 1 year ago
@MACKINBLAK2896 And so? Does that prevents the horse from being scared by it? And even if it did, you can very well suppose the horse was a new or touchy one. Why do people like you keep trying to point/find/create mistakes of no importance in good movies?
beckerqueiroz 1 year ago
@beckerqueiroz
is it really loud or deafening?
jfuya2000 1 year ago
@jfuya2000 I shouldn't say it's really deafening, but you bet it's loud enough.

HOLIDAY SHOT FIRST!!!
richieblackhearted 1 year ago
@richieblackhearted nope Wyatt and Billy Clanton shot first almost at the same time
TheJoker4747 1 year ago
@TheJoker4747 Nah. There are far too many reports that differ but the most believable one id that Holiday walked up with a shotgun and shot Clayton in the gut. He wanted to die with his boots on remember, what better way than to cause a massive bullet fest!
richieblackhearted 1 year ago
@richieblackhearted i have read 4 books about Doc and one about Wyatt. Of course there are many difrent reports but most people said Wyatt and Billy shot firs almost at the same time.
TheJoker4747 1 year ago
@TheJoker4747 Most isnt always accurate. I am talking about the most credibale. Holiday with a shotgun? A dueler carrying an assault weapon? Things make sense my way. I doubt Earp would have shot first given his "peace keeper" status, not with all the witnesses. Reports are not always accurate, and I say Holiday shot first.
richieblackhearted 1 year ago
@richieblackhearted but holliday was not very comfortable with a shotgun. he had tuberculosis and was very thin the blowback could have knocked him on his ass, so to speak. from whalt i have read ist not likely that doc shot firs.
TheJoker4747 1 year ago
@TheJoker4747 Youve just made my point for me! Why would frail man, a legendary gunslinger i might add, choose to take a shotgun to a gunfight? Two reasons. He was either never planing to use it or use it just once.
richieblackhearted 1 year ago
@richieblackhearted because virgil gave him the shotgun. Doc was wearing a long coat that day and virgil wanted the shotgun hidden under the coat
TheJoker4747 1 year ago
@TheJoker4747 Thats ridiculous. "Hey everyone, lets go to what could turn into a gunfight. I know, lets give the greatest crack shot in our party a conceiled weapon that he will probably only be able to shoot once before his lungs collapse"
That works!
richieblackhearted 1 year ago
@richieblackhearted well i dont know what to say the sources tell it that way. Virgil did not want to provoke a gun fight. So he gave the shotgun to doc so the Cowboys would net see it right away.
TheJoker4747 1 year ago
@TheJoker4747 You do realise this was in the days when people wore hip holsters as a matter of discorse? It was almost obligatory for a man to carry a weapon.
I also disagree that there was no provocation intended. Why go mob handed? Why enlist an even then legendary gunfighter to assist in the arrest. Why give the best shot in your party a "one shot only" token weapon?
richieblackhearted 1 year ago
@richieblackhearted Virgil Earp at the time was the Town Marshall. The night before Ike Clanton was drunk and telling everyone that he was going to kill Holliday and the Earps the first chance he got. In the town of Tombstone at that time there was a ban on carrying guns within the city limits. With the ban, and the threats Virgil decided that he should disarm the men. Several witnesses told him that they were all armed and he wanted to be protected. Before heading for the cowboys Virgil
TravolitanFilms 1 year ago
@richieblackhearted actually deputized his brother and Holliday so that they were able to go with the law on their sides. As Joker said Virgil gave the shotgun to Doc because of his long coat and took Doc's cane as a sign that he only wanted to peacefully disarm the men. He had no intention of starting a gunfight and neither did anyone in his party. Doc only went because his only friends were the Earps and he had partly caused an uproar with an argument the night before with Ike Clanton that
TravolitanFilms 1 year ago
@richieblackhearted started the threats from Clanton.
This shot came later in the fight as he was reaching for a gun on his horse and the horse moved away because
TravolitanFilms 1 year ago
@richieblackhearted of the sound of gunfire. Therefore your assumptions that Doc was the first to fire does not hold up when you look at the evidence. If you want to learn more about what actually happened read Casey Tefertiller's book Wyatt Earp: The Life Behind the Legend. He gives the most accurate account of what happened and if you take your time and do your research you will find that you are mistaken in your assumptions.
TravolitanFilms 1 year ago
@TravolitanFilms you are right with everything you say!
TheJoker4747 1 year ago
@richieblackhearted some say the earps used their trousers and coats pockets and waistbands of their trousers the day of the gunfight with tthe clantons
LRooster4Prez 1 year ago
@TheJoker4747 This is redundant anyhow. Holiday knew he was terminal before the gunfight but lived for some considerable time after. He frequented many bars before his illness took his life. This again was in the hope that he would be involved in a fight that would take his life. His notoriety was so great he recieved no challenges despite his own provocations. In fact during his later years he killed more onlookers than opponents because his firing was so fast but his aim poor.
richieblackhearted 1 year ago
@richieblackhearted yes youre are right about he was terminal, but at the time he was in Tombstone his tuberculosis was under control. otherwise he couldnt have gone with Wyatt on the Vendetta Ride. Youre are right about his aim, he had lousy aim. He was fast on the draw many people say he was as fast as Wild Bill. But he never killed onlookers. Doc never shot anybody who was not armed and aware of Docs intentions
TheJoker4747 1 year ago
@richieblackhearted It is recognized through research of the coroner's report and inquiry, as well as the testimony during Judge Spicer's inquiry as a pre-lim to possible trial, that Doc carried the shotgun, concealed in his long coat. Testimony differed somewhat as to who fired first, but most are now agreed that Doc and Billy fired almost simultaneously. What we also know is that Doc did not fire three shells (as depicted in this scene) from Virgil's shotgun. Only two.
RobertWaltz 1 year ago
@RobertWaltz
aye but what should be debated was did doc and the earps intend to kill billy and the others when they went there (it may have been a possibility in their minds) but doc was hiding the shotgun, and wyatt wasn't a fool a man like him could outgun any of the clantons, so going there to disarm the cowboys is different from if they went there to end the cowboys threats to them by lethal force hooded by the law. that's murder and should have been concidered. (i have different sources)
MAnnaconduit1 11 months ago
@MAnnaconduit1 Agree that The Cowboys and Earps were not friends. Many of us who have posted here are well-read on the Tombstone days, before, during, and after the gunfight. The Earps' motives; who shot first; why were those Cowboys there and with what intentions.....all subject to conjectutre based on the surviving records. The Vendetta Ride was just that....revenge. To justify or comdemn it today makes for good conversation. Beyond that, do any of us know what we would have done back then?
RobertWaltz 11 months ago
@RobertWaltz
personally i think i would have gone after them, but i would have follwoed the law (wyatt went beyond the law) and yes to talk about it today is pointlessbeyond a good conversation. however it urks me that so many people look up to a man who instead of follwoing the law which he defended and made his name off of went agaisnt its intrests for persoanl reasons. though losing a brother and seeing the other crippled could be hard, what he beleived matters only to him.
MAnnaconduit1 11 months ago
@MAnnaconduit1 When you have people who are in the law like Behan defending them it can be hard to actually get to them legally especially back in those times.
JcLeopard 7 months ago
@richieblackhearted Please see my reply to richieblackhearted below. Virgil carried Doc's cane, and Doc concealed the borrowed shotgun that Virgil was holding prior to the walk over to Fly's. The gunfight took place in the vacant lot at that location. Dennis Quaid (as Doc in "Wyatt Earp") actually does a better job of what witnesses testified to with regard the concealing of the shotgun.

Dislikers beware I'll make sure Wyatt and Doc pass some law to that thick skull of yours!

The Tombstone movie was crap

@TheVoiceOfReason93 IMO, If Ike Clanton didn't go around saying he was going to kill everyone, maybe that event could have been prevented.
BTW, Only the Earps fired? So tell us...how did Doc, Morgan and Virgil get hit? Friendly fire?

The only thing that is historically incorrect about this, is that History said that Holliday was grazed in the hip during the fight. So only Wyatt escaped without injuries. Everything else is pretty much 100% correct. Wel
