some people speak both languages... i understand and speak both viet and mandarin.. and i like both versions... but there is more punch or some expressions in the mandarin version that werent able to translated thoroughly into viet version, or when it is translated, it lose its punch line or exact meaning.. but anyway, im not viet but i speak viet. Is that so weird?
yeah because you aren't viet that you don' understand Vietnamese fully as a Vietnamese. It is still better for Vietnamese to able to understand the drama by it language
lol. Vietnamese is my first language and went to school over there. I do understand the language grammatically and culturally. Im not saying mandarin is better than vietnamese. It's just well, for example, a vietnamese movie will sound better and more fluently in Vietnamese rather than in Chinese because the script was create with the culture in mind such as certain metaphor that is only understandable in vietnamese or certain historically context that was embed into the daily conversation.
I think this version is dubbed and translated by Cantonese Vietnamese (Cantonese in Vietnam), which explains why the script isn't as good as it should be. I've noticed that the translators of Viet-dubbed Chinese movies like this don't correctly use complex Viet words.
For example, in describing the characteristics of Tieu Yen Tu (Zhao Wei), they repeatedly use the word "ngang tàn" which is totally wrong since ngang tàn in Vietnamese is used to describe a cruel and heartless person who acts completely out of the law. This isn't right to describe Tieu Yen Tu since she isn't heartless. The correct word to describe her would be "ngang bướng" which means an obstinate person who doesn't follow any rule set out for her/him.
Listening to the scripts in dramas of this kind, you'll feel that the translators aren't highly-educated; the scripts sound so "bình dân", and the characters' personalities aren't profoundly described; the word-choice is incorrect many times. If you listen to the versions of Chinese drama on HTV channel which is translated by professional Vietnamese translators), you'll see that the scripts sound much more sophisticated and profoundly convey the personalities and emotions of the characters.

Unlike other Chinese who live in Chinatown in vn, I live in the neighborhood that was dominantly vietnamese. In fact, i was the ONLY chinese kid (except my brother) on the block and in class. Well, it has been around 10 years since i migrated to the U.S so my Vietnamese is not as fluently as before, but i still understand Vietnamese well.
