Not sure if this apply to the older MacBook Pro. I just got my new one yesterday and also found this loud trackpad clicking noise, which drove me completely nut! So i called the apple Tech Support and found this solution: :) Hope it help:
Hi, after seeing your video I found an easyer solution. Go to System Panel --> Trackpad --> under "one finger" select "touch for a click". So know you can tap every where on the trackpad it works also for the double click. Hope it helps someone.
Haha, cool neat idea. I love how the rest of these people are all like THE MACBOOK WILL START A FIRE! IT'LL BURN THE HOUSE DOWN!! IT'LL CREATE A NUCLEAR EXPLOSION!! Calm down you rats, the computer wont heat up in that area to even WARM the little tissues. This is a GREAT idea and will do it when I get my Macbook Aluminum :)
why don't you just find a screw driver that fits that screw and tighten it. thats what a friend of mine did to his 17" mbp and it Helps. i don't think adding the paper to it isn't the smartest thing to do imo. the battery gives off some heat when its charging.
thanks this actually really helped me. There was a strange clicking noise under my trackpad which was really bugging me because I thought something was underneath it, turns out it was just loose but I tightened it up using the head of a nail because thats all i could fit in that shape! My trackpad is also a lot quieter now so thanks for posting this comment!!!
The temperature of the laptop will simply not be high enough at all to start a fire! So why dont you guys think before you comment - and stop flaming this guy!
this is a good way to turn your mbp into a hotplate.
instead of doing that, use some of those rubber feet that you can find at any hardware store. they are the perfect size and its what i use. it also doesn't pose (as much) of a fire hazard. x]
i really hope none of you do this. there is a much better way that actually solves the problem. there is a screw on the underside of the trackpad, it has three sides.. if you turn that a little bit clockwise the amount of space it takes to register a click will be reduced, thus making it quieter and easier to press. ill post a video soon, go to my profile to see the real way to do this
This is kinda of a bad idea. The battery of the MBP can get very hot at times and burn the tissue papers away. In addition, filaments from the tissue paper might get inside & even into fans which will add up over time and cause cooling problems.
The best way is just going to your system preferences and set it to tap one click, its not that hard.
be very careful i have a aluminum macbook not pro but the battery does get hot u might have a fire danger and the loud trackpad does not bother me a bit
wow that was the quietest 5 star rating i ever gave anyone on my macbook pro! nice idea... by the way, i've been reading some of these comments i think you are all paranoid, it works and the tissue does not burn!!! fffs
There must be a better material to reach the same effect, some foamy plastic, for example.
We've got a 2.53 GHz unibody MacBook Pro and a 2.4GHz unibody Macbook. The MacBook I am using now is my third in a row. The reason I will return this one too has nothing to do with the clicking. The keyboard is misaligned.
Apple recommended me removing the grey rubber piece between the battery and the cover, because the cover wasn't flush. I think this paper trick would make this even worse.
Have you tried using a raw flame retardant lining instead? Over the course of three days I haven't yet had it combust which was an issue a couple of times when I used paper.
Why should this paper burn lol? Its under the trackpad which isnt near the cpu and gpu. CPU and GPU are on the top and trackpad on the bottom. Bottom never gets hot. Even at the top its never hotter then 100 C.
100C is crazy hot! My MacBook Pro (santa rosa, 2.2ghz) usually only goes up to 65C at most, and 70ish C if I'm doing something that's heat producing. And I consider that hot. Normally, it runs at 49C thanks to 10.5.5. I can't imagine a MBP running at 100C, that's a real mac killer.
I don't play games with it, but I have run Windows on it before, and rendering in FCE causes quite a bit of heat. I think the highest it ever went before was while installing windows, it was 80s to 90s. I put it on my air purifier at that point.
Is that safe? Putting tissue paper in close proximity to the battery; which can give off a lot of heat under prolonged use? Whatever floats your boat lol. The trackpad on my new macbook pro isn't loud at all. I wonder if it is hit and miss with these new unibody platforms.
It's it a.... REALLY... bad idea to put combustible paper under a battery that gets really hot?

So solution: 1: Click on most left upper Apple Icon
2: on 4th: System Preferences (very useful, i suggest everyone should go through this, for new Mac or been a while not using Mac users :)
Click on it
3: On 2nd Row, Hardware, 6th row, look for Trackpad.
Click on it.
4: On Left Box, under One Finger
Check on box: Tap on Click
Now, use tap instead of Super Noise "Click"
Waaaalaaaaa, the noise dsappeared!
wishing you a beautiful day and Happy 4th of July!

it might not start a fire but it will definitely get all of that fine Kleenex dust all up in your shit... So I'd say yeah totally do it.

Is there a solution for late 2009 models, where you can't remove the battery?

How would the paper catch on fire? If your battery/laptop exceeds 451 degrees, you have bigger problems to worry about.

I think you can turn that little screw on the bottom of the trackpad a quarter to the right and it will become less noisy.
