why are people so hot on the no need for 16 Gig argument? i run music production software that can only handle 12 channels of my best plug in, i end up needing about 30 so 4 just doesn't cut it. on top of that using anything less than 8 gig on my video software is a run down, so to use both simultaneously id be straining my system with 8 gigs
lol why hate? even if it IS overkill, I would still go for the 16GB. It's just a nicer feeling when having 16GB in your iMac and if you can afford it...go for it! Thnx for the vid :)
@RINGO4LIFE I can't find a video showing how it performs with 16 gigs of ram! Can you or someone anyone make a video showing how it performs and what the difference is between a stock imac and a 16 gig ram imac?
Don't ever put computer on your carpet when doing upgrades or repairs. The carpet is full of static electricity and you could easily fry the motherboard or other components. You didn't know this before, but now you know. You were very lucky to get away with it this time.
Regarding RAM memory, you don't need more than 8GB for anything you do so don't waste your money. Rather, buy more diapers and baby food.
@Coilaman Like I said before, the comp was not on the carpet. It was on a T shirt. You just can't see it. If 8GB is all you need, then Apple wouldn't have let you upgrade to 16GB. :)
Again, you are wrong. 16GB of RAM for a home computer? Apple enabled you to upgrade in case you really need it. But Apple never told you to max out the RAM memory regardless of your needs. So don't give me this nonsense talk. It's telling me you are not very knowledgeable.
Why not ask forums before any upgrades? Tom's Hardware is a great site for learning about computers and I am a member of their forums. I also build PC computers and I have a Mac, so I bet I know more than you.
@Coilaman I know Tom from Tom's hardware. I also know Anand from AnandTech and Kyle from HardOCP and every other big tech site owners. I doubt you know more about computers than me. I've been overclocking Intel CPUs since the P2-300 and Celeron 300 (remember those?). I even know what the OCP in HardOCP stands for. Do you? :)
16BG for a home computer? A year ago, I bet you would be, 8GB on a home computer? You don't need that! Kinda like Bill Gates saying no one need more than 16MB of RAM.
@MotoTTZ Bill Gates's (most likely apocryphal) quote is, "640k ought to be enough for anybody."
Anyway, I agree if the RAM is inexpensive and you have the cash, it's generally worth it. Macs do a good job of making use of available RAM. If you keep your computer on all the time (not off, not sleeping) then you can have a ton of applications either open or previously opened (and therefore able to launch very quickly) up to your RAM limit.
Doing this on carpet or a t-shirt was not smart, though.
And just one more question, did it make a huge difference with the overall performance, sorry to bug you about it but I just bought an iMac recently with 4gb and I'm thinking about changing to 16gb
@Mnm1419 In everyday stuff, it doesn't make any diff. Where the diff comes in is when you are running a lot of stuff at once, or processing huge image or video files.
@MotoTTZ just one question, PLZ answer, i am planning on upgrading it on my iMac 27 inch core 2 duo to 16 gigs. but wanted to know if it increases performance with animation or modeling on these 3D softwares, because mine always freezes after about 2 hours... so wud it make a diff, or is it all about the VRAM?
@MotoTTZ ah i see... thanks! :D but one more question, with my current 4 gigs when the software freezes after some time, i look at the activity monitor, it says there is still quite alot that is inactive etc? so shouldnt the computer use all of it?
@themoneyzone People think that all the time. You'll be amaze at what you can do to electronics. It's like my video on installing the Invisible shield on an iPad when I spray the iPad with solution. So many people told me I could have killed the iPad. Ya, whatever.
Just for the hell of it, I rub the 2GB sticks against the carpets back and forth for 30 seconds hoping ESD would kill it. Didn't happen. They're still working.
@themoneyzone Yes, it's better than the stock 4GB it comes with. RIght now, I'm using 5.38GB with Chrome, iMovie, Adium, 1Password, Finder, Transmission and the Activity monitor open.
@MotoTTZ Yeah most of the time it's fine and RAM seems to be a bit more robust that other computer components but if you have a particularly "shocking" carpet and it's a dry day then ESD can happen. I just find it's always best to err on the side of caution and to encourage others to do the same. You wouldn't want someone reading your post and rubbing their RAM on the carpet only to find it destroyed by static.

@jack390 It most likely not memory related. Generally, low memory doesn't cause software to freeze.

I surprised your computer or RAM sticks didn't get whacked from ESD when you were replacing the RAM sticks on the carpet.

So can you buy one stick to have 2 + 2 + 4 gigs or ram ?
I hav a 21'' iMac right now.
Is it possible to manually change the memory on MacBook Air too ?

@elliottonyt Yes you can add a single 4GB stick to the current two 2GB sticks. The Macbook Air RAM can not be upgraded. They're soldered on.
