  • Could you make one for photograph by nickleback?! I'm tryin to learn it for a friend!

  • Nice; but slow down just a bit. Seems to rush between signs.

  • Why did you fingerspell the word "air"?

  • i take asl lessons

  • Thank you for doing this. I am learning ASL through songs and though some of the signs are quick it helps knowing what is actually being signed so I can look up just that word.

  • that's too fast, If I know ASL I would not need this tutorial. you go way too fast for beginners

  • you go pretty fast.

  • I'd go a little slower though. xD

  • you helped me in asl

  • This really helped! I knew most of it but got stuck on the tricky parts! You'll be seeing me with a vid of this Sion! And don't worry, I'm so giving you credit!

  • Thank you so much!! This help so much! I signed this song In my asl class and everyone was amazed! Thanks ever so much!

  • u did it to fast... i couldnt catch up... :( maybe next time do it a lil slower...

  • is it possible for you to slow it down a lil next time cause i ithink i missed a bit. but the music video was amazing and this tutorial was very helpful! *thanks*...

  • im certainly not being critical because im not nearly as good as you are, but isn't this...oh never mind i see the other post about PSE...neway ur video was awesome and I love what you're doing!

  • Great job

    : )

  • very helpful thanks!!! hope u keep doing these tutorials!!

  • Well perfect or not, I think you did a great job!!

  • Hey i love your video there is a boyin my grade hes actually one of my bff and he is deaf so i have to use sign to talk to him!!!!!!!!

  • thank you. this is really good and easy to sign.

  • that very good i lost all my hearing when i was about 8 years old and i had no chocie to start learing how to sing but then i got a choclear implan so now i can hear but the problm is now if i have a hard time signing so now i need to re learn how to sign

  • Hi there. :)

I think it's great that you're learning to sign. it's an amazing and beautiful language to learn. But as you know already, I believe, this is not ASL, and your labeling it as such is misleading to those who are completely clueless. As a beginning ASL student, you are not qualified to be -teaching- this.

Please keep signing and posting videos, but remember that you are a student and not a teacher. This is not YOUR language.

  • I agree, this is not ASL and should be renamed, but there IS a need for signed english.

Why? Some people already knowing english go deaf at an older age, or just have impaired hearing, and WISH to follow peoples conversation as close to the english they know as possible sometimes.

I'd say it's a bit like reading japanese written with english letters. It's not at all the same as reading the pictogram words, but it's a LOT easier for us to learn /understand. Signed english performs the same task!

  • i like this but its to fast and i learn when im taught in a certain speed and this is TOO FAST.!!.*

  • it is like drawing stick figures and then calling it art. and then showing everyone else how to make this so called art. this is not an ASL tutorial...

  • I honestly think you should take this off of Youtube. This is not ASL. You are signing English.

  • @BBMCproductions

I agree. Either remove it or label it "Signed English." Sadly, this is why the language of the Deaf has been butchered. Someone takes a few sign language calsses, posts a video, and you can see by some of the responses, think this gal is a pro.

Seriously, I'm not trying to be mean, but your inflated ego is going to cost a lot of people a lot of confusion.

  • OMG make 10000 move of these videos

  • I know I had commented in your actual video about this really being PSE but I'm only stressing it because Deaf people are very proud of their ASL language. If you advertise this as ASL some may comment and make suggestions, but others may be offended.

  • hey, for a while now i wanted to learn sign language but i cant seem to find anything useful on the internet. you seem to know a lot about this, could you reccomend anyway i could learn it. also what do you mean when you say this is not asl, sryy im just confuesed

  • @Kapilka2

ASL is the true language of the Deaf. Anything else, such as PSE or SEE is a signing SYSTEM, not a language. ASL has its' own structure and grammar. Deaf think conceptually, not in English words or sentences. That's why this is frustrating. This little gal is posting this as ASL, it isn't, but people don't know the difference and will copy her style. True ASL is dying because of it.

  • @Kapilka2 What I meant by "This is not ASL" is that ASL is actually its own language with own grammatical features. What this girl showed through her video is more of a PSE/English signing. (which means, you take the word-for-word and translate the signs to match words.) ASL uses more of a structure that is conceptual. Picture-like.

Oh, and while I'm writing this, I see that someone else commented back below.

You can my close video by searching ibanezgirl28 =)

  • Also, you say "lightning bug". No, that's just so horribly wrong. You should have used CL's to make a sign.

  • Don't advertise your songs as "ASL" when you aren't following the grammar or cultural norms. You use signed english and it is very clear by watching you sign that you are hearing.

  • I'm not trying to be critical, but there is a difference between ASl and the structure that you are using. There is nothing wrong with signing PSE, which is what you are using, but you may want to be cautious about doing a tutorial labeled ASL. You are teaching incorrectly and it can cause problems for others in the future. If you would like to see this song in true ASL, watch the ASL version by allyballybabe. I hope you will continue learning sign language because your PSE is fine.

  • Yeah. i am still learning so some songs i sign in PSE and others i get actual ASL. haha

  • PSE - what's that? call me dumb, but I've never heard of it. I'm assuming it's a lot like SEE?

  • @moxeygirl430 no way. allyballybabe is not as great as some people think she is- check out zephyreros's version. Allyballybabe took a lot of her signs from him on it, and ewitteborg is amazing. Just input from a CODA.

  • @untraceablekiss not being sarcastic or rude...how can you tell someone 'took signs?' aren't ther the signs supposed to be the same?

  • @GloryB2Jesus Watch some of the other (better) interpretations of this song, and you'll see. Sign language has so much room for flexibility and creativity, as there are many ways to sign one word. That's why it's called interpretation, as opposed to translation.

  • This is really great. I just may have to use this with my 4th graders for their talent show. It would be a great song for them to learn to sign and you teach it very well. Do you mind?

  • No not at all! Good luck teaching them, it should be tons of fun!!

  • Oh i feel bad, but I have oobers of requested songs to sign. Sorry :( Good luck though

  • I am not sure if I can resign this because I have tons of other requests. However, what may work is if you take it line by line. Pause the video after every line and make sure you are confident with what the sign means and how to sign it before moving on! Good luck!! :)

  • Woohoo

  • haha thanks!

  • i wanna learn ASL...but it's too hard to remember becuz probably in a few mins i'll forget the exact thing i typed right now :(

  • haha! Yeah ASL is a lot of memorization and remembering what someone said while you are interpreting! haha

  • yeah, im still trying to learn the alphabet! ;)

  • I'm teaching myself ASL so I can communicate with a student in my class, thanks for the lesson on the song I love it :). Where did you learn ASL?

  • Well I have been signing for three years now, and I started because a friend I used to figure skate with had a mom who was an interpreter. So everyday after practice we would sign together, than my school started to offer it as a class. :)

  • So I just wanted to say that you helped me out so much with this song. I am learning sign language because the doctors say that my dads going to need to know it in a few years because he's going deaf. So learning a song every once in a while is a lot of fun for me. So thank you so much for helping me learn this!! :-)

  • No problem! I am glad I could help! And that's awesome that you would do that for your dad!! :)

  • wow nice vid its good to teach people asl

it makes me wanna learn the asl

hope sumone can teach me plz

  • There are tons of ways to learn ASL. You can watch signing videos (Here on YouTube) you can find classes offered in your community, find a deaf friend, or even check out a book!!! I hope you have an awesome time learning ASL and thanks for watching my videos!

  • this is great! :D i wanna learn ASL so badly

and, btw, i'm a huge jonas brothers fan, so it's pretty awesome that you did the ASL of their songs also :)

  • Haha! Sweet! I hope this helps you learn ASL better!

  • Yay time to learn! ;))

  • Good luck! :D

  • Comment removed

  • this really is helpful and youre really good. you should do more songs! im really just getting into asl and your videos hepled alot. btw my name is deven.

  • Well hi Devan! I am Carissa! Thanks so much for watching my videos, and I am glad that they are able to help you out! That's awesome! I plan on making more song videos so there is no need to worry!! haha

  • its pretty good but it follows English word order for the most part. Keep it up.

  • Thanks! And I am definitely working on my ASL Gloss. :)

  • Ya I think we all are!

  • you are doing the signs very fast

  • I'm sorry. I had to speed it up a little or the video would be too long. It helps to watch the video one line at a time, and than pause the video. Make sure you know each line before you move on to the next line. Hope it can help some!!!

  • oh ok thanks for the tip

  • Thank you so much for this video! I learned it in less than a week. I can do it in my sleep. Literally! :) Thank you! <3

  • haha! Awesome! I am happy that I could be of assistance to you! :)

  • I think you did awesome!! That was really cool of you to try and help people out like that!! I'm trying to learn how to sign happy by nevershoutnever and it's so hard!! I bet you get requests all the time but i'm totally struggling with the speed and stuff. If you could sign that song i would be so appreciative!! TY!! =)

  • Yeah! I actually love nevershoutnever so i would love to sign it! However, right now i have to sign Christmas sings for a concert, but i will definitely add it to my list! :D

  • Happy Thanksgiving!

  • YOU TOO! :D

  • next time can u sign the man who can't be moved by the script i love that song and would really appreciate it

  • I will add it to my list for sure! Right now I am working on Christmas songs because I have to sign them for a concert, but continue watching for it! :)

  • also some of the lyrics r wrong

  • That's because you have to change it into ASL Gloss instead of English, so sometimes you either have to use different words or change the order. :)

  • ik but its supposed to "i get 1000 hugs from 10,000 lightning bugs 10,000 hugs i think that was the only thing i noticed

  • Oh I understand. My bad!

  • ahhhhhh to fast for the one that dosnt take classes!! :/

  • Sorry! :/ It really helps if you watch it line by line and pause it, learn that line, and that move on instead of taking the whole song at once. Good luck!

  • MY HERO!!! :D

  • haha Thanks! :)

  • Oops... I accidently hit a button and lost my message :(

Nice job on this tutorial! I did want to mention that the sign for SEVERAL or FEW (distinguished by facial and size of the sign) is made beginning with an 'A' handshape instead of an 'S'. This also makes it easier for the fingers to slide off the thumb. I hope you keep up your study of ASL; you are a fluid signer and will continue to improve the more you learn. I look forward to watching your progress!

  • Thanks! haha maybe that is why I had such a hard time signing few, cause I was doing an "s" handshape.

  • is this glossed in asl?

  • Yes that actual video is. :)

  • The only thing I'm having trouble with is the line " but I'll know where several are " and i need to learn it by Dec. 3rd. I've got to perform this song in front of my entire class...... I'm not looking forward to it... lol

  • Okay the sign for several is kinda hard. haha start with an "s" hand shape palm orientation is up. Than movement is starting with your index finger unfold your hand. So to sign this line, sign but I know several head nod. I hope this helps, let me know if it doesn't. Good luck learning it, and have fun signing it to your class. :)

  • For several I just did like the part sign, where you take your right hand and cut your left hand in half...if that makes sense to what I'm saying, lol.

    But I did okay, I got a B.

    Thanks for the help (:

  • Not a problem! Congrats on the B! :D

  • @Love4Sign you should set this video as a video response to your original fireflies video to increase exposure.

  • That's a good idea. I think I will do that!

  • this is sooo fast, i cant even tell wut ta do

  • Oh no I'm sorry. I had to kinda go through the song fast or else the video would have been too long. Something you can do is pause it after every lines, and be sure you understand that line before you move to the next. That will be easier than taking the whole song all at once. :)

  • I'm doing this song for my asl project,

    and it's killing me.

    lol

  • Oh no! Well I hope this helps! Good luck to you!

  • first of all, ur incredibly cute.

secondly, the way you sign the sign is very SEE, or Signed Exact English

you are very smooth and fluid signing this way, but if we get down to the pure value of Deaf people and what they understand the language as, it should be ASL.

stating that, you are very good at how you sign, and it is very widely accepted. so good job!

and because u actually took the time to make a tutorial video of all the signs, this makes me rate this vid as 5 star! you ROCK!

    xD

  • WOW! Thanks so much! And yes I realize that my signing is kinda SEE (especially when it comes to signing music) but I am working on it. :)

  • You're doing a great job. You sign very fluidly and you seem to know quite a bit of vocabulary. I noticed that there were a couple signs you said you didn't know - if you'd like, I could send you the link to a fabulous online dictionary I use. But don't worry about always knowing the sign - some words are just fingerspelled. I'm learning this song in ASL, and the way I sign the dances is by fingerspelling the type of dance (foxtrot or sock hop) and placing the "dance" sign in the right location.

  • can u send me the dictionary? im tryin to learn as much asl as i can...pretty much our of boredum...but its fun too :] and it could come in handy some day

  • Grammar is definitely the hardest thing to learn, especially when signing music because that can take some manipulation of grammar (just like when writing the lyrics). I sign the first lines, "Eyes you not believe/If 10 million fireflies/World, they light up while I sleep." I'm pretty sure that's the best way to sign it for ASL. I still don't know how to say "It's hard to say that I'd rather stay awake when I'm asleep" in proper ASL grammar. I'm sure we'll both get there with practice, though!

  • Thanks for the tips and encouragement! I was not too concerned with putting this song into ASL Gloss and people definitely called me out on that! :/ haha but I would love to know what site you use for your vocabulary. I also have one, so I am curious to see if they are the same.

  • Isn't the Gloss the words in exact order of the signs, writing or typed in this case (similar to subtitles)? This song is not in ASL, it is in PSE I believe.Pidgin Sign, meaning ASL vocabulary but in Exact English word order. ASL would have different grammar rules than what you used for this song. Not criticizing just trying to be helpful and clarify the definitions. :)

  • Remember, in ASL the subject always goes first. Always.

  • @PseudoKitsch Actually, the object usually goes first in the OSV or "Object-Subject-Verb" word order. Sometimes, the subject can come first - usually in very short sentences. The rules for when to use OSV and when not to are not entirely clear to me yet, but I think I'm beginning to get an intuitive understanding of it even if I can't explain the grammatical rule yet, lol.

  • LOL, I learned the song in a matter of about 30 minutes. Great tutorial.

  • Thanks!

  • Total Awesomeness

  • haha...Thank you

  • eeks you went to fast lol D= i have to play it over and over and over to learn it lol =) good job tho and thanks for uploading this

  • Yeah no problem. Sorry about how fast I went. : / Good luck learning it!

  • Thanks for posting this ... when i hear the song in the car i get distracted cause im signing it instead of driving! haha

  • Oh! That's dangerous but I do the same thing! haha

  • once again, amzing job. you are really good. i did actually spot some of the words i already knew, like the numbers and things like that! great job!

  • Thanks! :)

  • nice job, i would just say that when you sign the word "when" that you typically use it only dealing with a certain time period...like in the song you probably should sign "happen or event" instead of "when" i was just taught this lol

  • Okay! Thanks I am always looking for ways to improve my signing! :)
