Since we are talking about great trumpeters in salsa, I have to mention Pete Nater. His solos are very creative and you can tell he knows alot of music, latin, jazz and pop. I'm sure he spent time listening to Perico and Juancito also.
Juancito Torres was a joy to hear. I remember his trumpet work on "Sali porque Sali" by Cheo Feliciano. An incredible and exquisite solo with Cheo soneando like only he can...
Thank you for these new Perico clips. When I was in high school in the 70's, my trumpet teacher turned me on to his playing with Fania All-Stars. He has stunned me ever since. He has a unique lyrical and playful style that I have never heard anyone else approach. He is phenomenal. I just wish there was more opportunity to see him perform in the States.
"Perico" is a very rare trumpet player. I have a question. Did you ever have the chance to hear Juancito Torres. He also was a different kind of trumpet player. His solos would blow your head off. He made hundreds of recordings with different artist. He recorded with Herb Albert & the Tijuana Brass. But the ones I enjoy the most are the Eddie Palmieri ones from the 80's. "Palo Pa' Rumba", The Truth-(La Verdad), Solito. He also played with the Fania All-Stars. He was my friend & musical mentor.
I did not know about Juancito Torres. I am investigating him now. Thanks for the tip. I find some of the most phenominal trumpet players with the greatest stamina are in salsa or latin jazz bands.
Yes, Yes Brother who can deny that Juancito Torres is one of the finest trumpet players in salsa and of course the Latin Jazz genre. Luis Perico was very big back in the days. Some how he's been out of the lime light for a while. Sure would love to see Perico up on the mount again. He is one of the greatest out there. Cheo Feliciano said it in one of his records, and I quote; “Por tu linda ejecución es que te llaman Perico"

Very smooth, clean lines; reminiscent of someone from an earlier era, Bobby Hackett.
