The flaw in your plan is the data carriers, AT&T don't offer unlimited tariffs any more, O2 removed unlimited data here in the UK, Vodaphone don't offer it. I pay £45 a month for 750 megs capped, A 64kbps stream accounts for 8kB a second, or 480kB a minute – almost 5MB every ten minutes. So, assuming I use my mobile phone’s data for NOTHING ELSE other than listening to the radio, I’ll get a thousand minutes – 16 hours of radio listening a month out of it over 3G before having to pay extra.
You could argue the same for TV I suppose, but on-demand services are still some way off being the standard way of viewing, it will happen eventually but ISPs and cell providers really need better infrastructure to support high quality streaming for everyone, any time.
You bring up some solid points, but have only scratched the surface. I've written a post far too long to put in your comments with some more thoughts on this subject. I can't post the link here, but you'll find it on my Google profile if you click my name.
Remember, Remember the 5th of November the gun powder, treason, and plot. I know of no reason why the gun powder, treason, and plot should ever be forgot.
local radio. why. its free and easy to get in the car. i drive all the time. so i use radio all the time. i have cds i use all the time too. i still buy cds as well. i believe in physical media. i did buy some things off itunes but you select each song. when you buy a disc you get them all. and you experience more music than you would of. and i love it. so many songs i would love to listen to i would probably never of found if i just used itunes.
the whole point of internet radio was to give an alternative selection to the main local radio stations! Now, if internet radio is more popular local radio stations are fulfilling the same purpose, an alternative listening. Without local radio stations internet radio stations wouldn't be that alternative because they would have nothing to contrast to!
local radio stations around me anyway offer live listening threw the web if you with some song selection. also in their segments they talk about things that are going on around you not nation wide
Local Radio is very much dead for me and my group of friends/girlfriend, there is still plenty of people who only listen to popular "mainstream" music, I don't like the radio because it has nothing I like or would listen to. I can't even find new music on public radio since THEY PLAY THE SAME CRAP 24/7.
My local radio stations all have an internet stream. So, there really isn't anything special from my OTA radio that I can't get from the internet. I often listen to my "Local" stations right from my laptop.
If you happen to live in a city in which there is real news radio (not a station playing a bunch of syndicated "opinion shows", but actual local news), then radio isn't dead yet. You can also listen to baseball for free when you're not near a TV. I'm disappointed you didn't talk about regular music stations, who have all been bought up by huge media conglomerates. That's what's dead.
OH MY GOD YOU ARE SO FUCKING LUCKY. WHERE I LIVE THEY HAVE FUCKING LOCAL RADIO ON EVERYWHERE. IN EVERY HOUSEHOLD, IN EVERY CAR. 24 FUCKING 7. IT'S SO ANNOYING I HATE THE MUSIC THAT'S ON IT SO MUCH I THINK IT'S OFFENCIVE. AND IT'S ON. IT'S EVERYWHERE. IT'S FUCKING EVERYWHERE. I HATE IT SO MUCH. AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
I dont like either internet or local radio due to having to sit through a bunch of song that 99% of them you dont like, much easier to set a playlist on itunes that way you only listen to songs you like.
I have to disagree Chris... Local radio is not "dead". It's in transition but it's isn't dead. The audience listening habits have changed, but Local radio does things Internet will never be able to do... LOCAL. Local Radio will have it's place always, it just isn't the sole media source as it once was.
@koreyb1980 don't forget that even when radio transmissions move to completely digital and stream through devices, they will still be local to radio devices in cars, and to mobile devices.
Terrestrial radio will never die. The medium may change, yes, but the day that local content on the radio dies is the day that local content altogether ceases to exist.
95% of the people I know listen to local radio... not a specific channel or station, but whatever is on. For the people who watch these things (geeks) local radio may be 'dead' but to most of the world, It is alive and kicking.
I only listen to one local radio show, Johnny Dare, as well as the new 24/7 comedy station. I'd listen to more, but there aren't any stations in my area that constantly play my music. Primarily 1980s music and swing/big band. Luckily, I've found several internet stations that have it as well as the music channels on my cable. Internet radio is also the only place that I've found that has Irish music channels.
Yeah it‘s dead ! I don‘t like listening to stupid commercial music and adds all the time with poor quality and idiots talking about politic stuff all the time mixed with news about crashes, disasters and so. Shoutcast rules !!
I listen to seatle radio station (jack fm) on my laptop and cellphone from minnesota using radio(dot)com does that count as local or internet or both because im lissing to a physical local station over the internet
I love the local radio, free, easy and accessible anywhere! I'd rather use that than on my phone where I have to pay data charges unless there is no radio available in certain places and then I would use Internet radio.
Totally wrong Chris... Think bigger.. put yourself in the situation of a guy from Denmark. What do I care about the stupidity coming out of Northern America... (you are excempt). We have more and more local stuff here in Denmark now, because people have stopped caring about over-seas content...
Of course when technology improves the internet will become more and more prevalent, until broadcasting radio in the traditional fashion becomes redundant.
Internet radio sucks because when your in the car it uses 3G and 2GB limit will go fast streaming that and the actual radio is better than that because it is unlimited and free. But PodCasts is the winner for me off line and free.
If you use your phone for radio, it will obviously drain your battery. So if I'm out and about I will want my radio in the car or a radio at the place I am at to be on. Sure I could use a car charger etc etc but I have enough cords at home, let alone having charger cords constanly in use for my phone. No I don't think local radio is at all dead, many use it in the traffic to and from work and all other daily activities. At home it's not used as much sure, but not many are at home all day, so.
Uh, local radio isn't dead. People listen to it all the time in their cars. I personally don't, but most people I know who drive, young or old, still listen to the radio.
Didn't really answer the question... Internet radio isnt your itunes library. There are actual radio stations that only broadcast over the internet, that was what you should have been comparing local radio to.
I actually still listen to radio! There is a local alternative rock FM station I listen to in the morning and AM station I listen to in the afternoon. Now, I do listen to both of these stations mostly via the internet, but they are still originally broadcast in the traditional sense.
I stopped listening to the radio because of all the commercials and annoying DJs talking all over the song or they only play half of the song. But I would turn on my radio once in a while.
I like Lastfm. Local radio station here absolutely sucks. I choose what I want to listen to instead of hearing Bob Seger and Lynryrd Skynyrd every other song'
I never listen to the radio for music, I am a big control nut on what I listen to musically so I listen to mp3's. For News and Talk I still listen to the local radio stations, however I very rarely use the actual radio for this as almost every radio station now streams there content online so I usually go to their websites when at home or use an iphone app on the go to listen to them.
I listen to local radio every time i get in my truck! that is the best way to get traffic reports while keeping your eyes on the road, and you get to listen to people in your area talk about stuff that is relevant to the people in the area. thats also how i learn about local concerts.
i do not believe that local radio is going anywhere anytime soon, it is growing like crazy in my area, Charleston, SC
I would have to say that local radio is still very much alive. The car I drive only has an AM/FM radio, a cassette deck, and a CD player (which I don't even use). Most of the time, I'll listen to the radio when I'm driving, but sometimes, I'll just listen to music on my iPhone (via a cassette adapter), on which I would listen to either my music on there, or some other local radio stations that I've discovered on iHeartRadio. Plus, I like to listen to the morning shows on my way to school too.
Speaking strictly from the area i live, local radio is no longer a variety of different songs in the genre your listen to its whatever is popular at the time
I went into college for radio and television broadcasting and have a really tough time finding a career in my field. I am starting to lose hope and believe that I made a big mistake spending 1000's of dollars for a dying field. I live in Cincinnati, OH which is a fairly big radio field but, it's very strict over who they hire and require connections that I don't have. If you or anyone else could provide tips for me, it would be GREATLY appreciated.
I don't think they're dying..... Not everyone has the money to spend on phones and things to get internet radio. Plus, I hate internet radio because they hardly play the songs I want.
For example, I listened to Earbits, and I never heard of a single person that sung, and I didn't like them either. Didn't play any popular ones.
I am working for a connivence stores and my boss has to pay for radio for about hundreds of bucks, some whatever radio/music association collect payment. even we only played video in the early of the year, and stop play it for rest of the year , and they caught us, then we have to pay the fee, it's just stupid, our customer actually listen to the ads in the radio, why should we pay for just normal local radio station.
Ditto on the unsubscribing from XM. The only thing worse was way back around the turn of the century, after having a Yahoo email address for over a year, I started the process of unsubscribing from AOL - the training wheels of the internet (feel free to use the term!). After almost 2 hours on the phone with several levels of flunkies, tired and out of time to talk, I settled for 6 months free. After 5 months of no activity they finally killed the account.
I've never understood internet radio. Seems a waste of battery and bandwidth on something like a smartphone unless you're listening to talk radio. For music just put it on the phone and listen to it, make a playlist...
I do agree that sirus/xm is to much. But they do offer life time membership if your ever interested again. I think it's like $500 now. I can't remember since the last time they changed it. Either way awesome vid! Keep them coming!
my local station in my car...and when I'm on the go i listen same local station via iHeart radio app. I mostly listen for the morning DJ's conversation.
Spotify all the way! In the UK radio stations play commercial mainstream drivel that repeat over and over and over again. Our selection of TV programming is no different. I use to listen to shoutcasts with Winamp but couldn't take the bad bandwidth issues with buffering.
Radio isn't just for music, but for local emergencies too. Its also good when they announce local activities, and play local bands. If they are D.j. ing at a local beach or even, its nice to join the party. Its part of a community. So I'll have to disagree with you there. If you do just want non stop music, then yes, you can just listen to online music.
I listen to Sirius and Pandora, etc all the time, however I don't think local radio is dead because I still love the local feel and the personality of people that live near me. Internet/satellite radio is too impersonal sometimes. Plus we get local news and such.
I think the key thing you said Chris is that you are not in your car very much. For those like myself that have to drive a lot, the combination of FM & XM is great!
I disagree very heavily, which I never normally do with you Chris.
Here in the UK, Local Radio is currently under scrutiny (well, with the BBC Local Radio) as they don't give Local Radio enough funding and ability to do stuff and now they are decreasing it even more.
Local Radio plays a huge part in the LOCAL area. helped by being able to listen online. Without it, the local community wouldn't be that much of a community anymore. News, sports, music in the area... all be gone...
I listen to FM radio as well as XM EVERY DAY of my life. I think "local' radio is still very much alive. It's just way more convient for me than always having to plug my iphone in, open the app, select my station yada yada yada.
local radio in the UK is no where near dead. Radio 1 gets hundreds of thousands of viewers. For example the chris moyals show is something to listen to on your way to work.
@Mrdinner250 The Moyles show is load of talking and rubbish. Where is the tunes!! Can stand radio with talking, adverts etc. Get some tunes on and shut up the DJ rambling.
@creativetux@mrdinner250 - Chris Moyles Show is sucessful for what it is. It wouldn't be doing what it does if everyone hated it. To me, that kind of thing livens up the day and gets me ready. I wake up with the show and I enjoy the laughter.
Many disagree, yes. But many more agree and that is why he and the show are successful. Highest listeners ever last quater.
I think that the prob with the post-network/radio era where you can get to anything from everywhere is that whether or not you liked payin for or listening to what was being broadcast, in the old days, before the net, there was someunpredictability, you didn't always know Exactly what you were going to see/hear next, unless you read the TV/Radio guides, remember them? Nowadays we have almost complete control of what we look at, not a bad thing but you've lost some of life's interesting moments
When working on my computer I obviously listen to internet radio (Triple M, Sydney or Gala Radio), but in the car CBC radio 2 it is along with a local rock station.
I don't have a smart phone so when I'm in the car listen to the radio. Sometimes I listen to cds or my ipod but not always. I like to use iheart radio on my ipod when I do have wifi which I think are local radio stations.
I like local FM radio when I'm driving around because it's instant access with the push of a button, and it's free.
I don't like using internet radio in public because it means constantly fiddling with my iPod Touch, being forced to only use it in WiFi areas because I don't have 3g, and constantly fighting to sync my apps with my computer.
iTunes and iPod Touch can go away. I prefer using normal FM radio in public, and Youtube when I'm at home using my computer.
you can listen to local radio via internet

Location is irrelevant, it's the content, I listen to a few local, London and USA based streams.

Dear Chris,
I went into college for radio and television broadcasting and have a really tough time finding a career in my field.

I prefer local radio since its.... well... local. I listen to internet radio only at work since I get no reception in my office.

Local only carries a small selection. Net carries everything. It's a no brainer. :P
wolfeedarkfang 3 months ago
I don't think they're dying..... Not everyone has the money to spend on phones and things to get internet radio. Plus, I hate internet radio because they hardly play the songs I want.
For example, I listened to Earbits, and I never heard of a single person that sung, and I didn't like them either. Didn't play any popular ones.
I still listen to local radio everyday

I am working for a connivence stores and my boss has to pay for radio for about hundreds of bucks, some whatever radio/music association collect payment. even we only played video in the early of the year, and stop play it for rest of the year , and they caught us, then we have to pay the fee, it's just stupid, our customer actually listen to the ads in the radio, why should we pay for just normal local radio station.

Local radio is far from dead for the same reason am radio has never died. It comes with the car when you buy.
How many people listen to internet radio in their car? Hardly anyone yet.

Thumbs up if you listen to the Chris Moyles show!

I don't even remember when I used radio and you can even get internet radio into your car radio. lol local radio is dead.

JohnnyVisions 3 months ago
I listen to Sirius and Pandora, etc all the time, however I don't think local radio is dead because I still love the local feel and the personality of people that live near me. Internet/satellite radio is too impersonal sometimes. Plus we get local news and such.

WTF Chris , on all videos all products will die , OMG !
spyridonas23 3 months ago
I think the key thing you said Chris is that you are not in your car very much. For those like myself that have to drive a lot, the combination of FM & XM is great!
tylerwarren 3 months ago
I disagree very heavily, which I never normally do with you Chris.
Here in the UK, Local Radio is currently under scrutiny (well, with the BBC Local Radio) as they don't give Local Radio enough funding and ability to do stuff and now they are decreasing it even more.
Local Radio plays a huge part in the LOCAL area. helped by being able to listen online. Without it, the local community wouldn't be that much of a community anymore. News, sports, music in the area... all be gone...

Chris was this directed to Tom Leykis and him trying out internet radio next year in the hopes of maximising revenue?
RyanSocratous 3 months ago
local radio in the UK is no where near dead. Radio 1 gets hundreds of thousands of viewers. For example the chris moyals show is something to listen to on your way to work.
Mrdinner250 3 months ago
@Mrdinner250 The Moyles show is load of talking and rubbish. Where is the tunes!! Can stand radio with talking, adverts etc. Get some tunes on and shut up the DJ rambling.
creativetux 3 months ago
@creativetux @mrdinner250 - Chris Moyles Show is sucessful for what it is. It wouldn't be doing what it does if everyone hated it. To me, that kind of thing livens up the day and gets me ready. I wake up with the show and I enjoy the laughter.
Many disagree, yes. But many more agree and that is why he and the show are successful. Highest listeners ever last quater.
djbennett 3 months ago
I think that the prob with the post-network/radio era where you can get to anything from everywhere is that whether or not you liked payin for or listening to what was being broadcast, in the old days, before the net, there was someunpredictability, you didn't always know Exactly what you were going to see/hear next, unless you read the TV/Radio guides, remember them? Nowadays we have almost complete control of what we look at, not a bad thing but you've lost some of life's interesting moments
Samthebam4044 3 months ago
I still listen to the radio when I'm in the car. Why? Because I like to listen to the dj's who make senseless stories.

CourtneyEly 3 months ago
I like local FM radio when I'm driving around because it's instant access with the push of a button, and it's free.
I don't like using internet radio in public because it means constantly fiddling with my iPod Touch, being forced to only use it in WiFi areas because I don't have 3g, and constantly fighting to sync my apps with my computer.
iTunes and iPod Touch can go away. I prefer using normal FM radio in public, and Youtube when I'm at home using my computer.
