Weirdly, this version - much "worse" recording - sounds much better, soulwise, than another, more polished recording also on you tube, which has a long unnecessary preamble by Eric.
Great version. The old time feel provided by Wyntons band makes Layla sound like it was written almost 100 years ago. It sounds like an old blue's classic. Hey Eric, i got a song for you to do. How about ' I got a right to sing the blue's ' by Harold Arlen, Ted Koehler
I appreciate that they tried to do something different with it, but the reality didn't live up to my expectations. Part of the beauty of this song is in the rapid-fire melody. EC already tried it as a slow shuffle, and it was ok, but nothing like the original, in terms of beauty, IMO. Some good soloing, and all, but, no, they didn't quite pull it off here. In the original, it's that frenetic energy that gives the gives the listener a sense of the desperation the singer is feeling.
@u2b4dumeze spot on review. could not agree more re: the orginal's urgency and the already done slow shuffle approach. love wynton and know what he was striving for here, but on this occasion it was overcome by clapton's lame and hackneyed approach.

Lackluster performance IMHO. I thought it was going to be jazzy and more abstract judging from the opening, more subtle but instead it was literal and driven by Clapton, with vocals no less. Sorry, 2 Stars only.
Sounds like a funeral march played by zombies. Wynton Marsalis keeps missing a chance to miss a chance to prove that he can play with soul--no surprise, really, Marsalis has been missing the chance to miss the chance to prove that he can play with soul since he picked up a trumpet. In the words of Keith Jarret, "Marsalis sounds like a high school trumpet player. AMEN.
@DrkTide7 Blablabla. You can love jazz and dislike (or like) Marsalis. This is no contradiction. Besides that: There is no such thing as a right to listen to jazz music.
p.s.: Tradition is not to preserve the ashes, but to pass on the flame. (Morus/Mahler/...)

@Bravo6Whiskey you're absolutely right, Wynton's solo sounds like something i played bank in my Jr. high jazz band class!

If you really believe what you just wrote, then you have no business listening to jazz music much less commenting and or criticizing it. Just saying.
