  • Oh, so this movie has Johnny Depp in it?

It must be a great movie!

  • 16:28 love how he gets angry!!! xD

  • I like original grandpa Joe's singing. Maybe I'm wierd.

  • Gene Wilder: Funny, sarcastically original and wise.

Johnny Depp: Strange, boring and too demented.

  • Johnny Depp and his 11 people disliked this.

  • i kind of prefered tim burtons version but thats just my opinion

  • its to hard to follow him

  • why in the world does this guy post videos under different accounts?

  • @NotAllThatEvil12 He doesn't. He doesn't post to Youtube, so other people put them up here on their own accounts.

  • "This kid could try out for Jesus." That line gets me every time.

  • I really like how NC just says what he thinks. :P It's not popular at all to like the old version more! But I agree with him. Maybe the new movie is closer to the book, and Dahl would've liked it more (he hated the old one- but then again, he was very perfectionist) but the old Wonka feels more eccentric and unpredictable, thus he is better. :P Meh. Maybe it's just nostalgia.

  • honestly when i first saw the poster for charlie and the factory i thought it was a sequel to willy wonka and thought "oh cool we get see how charlie runs it" but it ended up being a remake

  • im suprised you didnt analyze the scenes where they introduced wonka, those were big moments in each film

  • actually the original was called willy wonka to promote a line of chocolate bars

i dont care its different from the book, its still better

  • You mean a 70's disco song and 60's hippy song

  • Comment removed

  • you forgot one cattegory: scary tunnel

  • Thank you. I hated the new one... and I'd personally listen to "Its a Small World After All" for 3 hours straight than listen to the "Willy Wonka Willy Wonka" song once.

  • Can someone PLEASE tell me what was up with the scene in Wonka and Chocolate Factory when he was in the room where everything was cut in half?

  • @UltimasIsland he was deaf in one ear

  • @BEZERKSTUDIOS718 ...Really? o.O

  • When the the puppet start to sing from C &TCF before you meet willy wonka, why does it sound like willy wanker not willy wonka. ever since of herd it years ago i always hear willy wanker which is creepy

  • Can anyone tell what editing program Douchy McNitPick was using?

  • Roald Dhal hated the old version because they made too many changes from the book, I agree I mean the songs in the Gene Wilder version were absolute pants! And the oompa loompa's looked like dwarf clowns! XD The newer version isn't great, but I prefer it to the old one that was absolute SHIT!!!!!!! D:<

  • 09:53

i thank god that i have a crappy short term memory

  • 5:13 What you mean 10-15 year olds today? This explains it in a nutshell.

  • Ugh I utterly HATED Charlie from the new one! Way to stereotypical the sweet little british boy who is perfect. Every time he talks I just wanna throw a brick at him!

  • how dare he make fun of boy scouts!!!

  • yeah yeah the new one is closer to the book but do you idiots realize Dahl wrote the script for Willy Wonka so its not like Hollywood ruined it Dahl made the changes himself

  • @simsgirlgem I think the changes are an improvement from the book.

  • @ssonic116 I agree but I was pointing out a fact because the main excuse for defending the new one is its closer to the book

  • The ending's great - at least I knew that episode of Looney Tunes so I could get that reference :D

  • ugh both songs in the intro rape my mind

  • GOOD MORNING! LOOK AT THE SUN!

  • A) Johnny Depp is AWESOME in that and any other Tim Burton movie and B) SHE IS NOT RUSSIAN!!!! seriously, what's with Americans and AWFUL Russian accent that every one's doing?? well, except the ones in police school 2 . .. . .I think it was the 2:d one...

  • The puppet song was annoying but the way you reacted to it was hilarious

  • I notice quite a few people defending the new one are using the defense that it's closer to the book. First, this is a contest of the better movie, not the better follower of source material. Secondly, the ending to the new one completely screws the end of the book. I didn't get to read the original book, but I read the sequel, which was completely dependent on the ending. Neither of them were very good at staying true, and its completely unrelated to which of them was more enjoyable to watch.

  • HA! I loved how this ended.

  • I think the charlie in the new version is the kid from insidious.....just sayin.

  • @deadlyponiezzzz well you're completely wrong... Have you seen what the new charlie looks like now? It's been like 7 years since it was made. The insidious kid is like, younger than 10. And they look nothing alike.

  • "It's polluted."

    "It's chocolate."

    no it's not."

  • The old Charlie annoyed me when I saw the original. Mostly because of his acting. The new Charlie annoyed me even more though. That kid always plays the perfect, doe-eyed, soft spoken adorable boy and those types of characters get on my nerves.

  • R.I.P David Kelly....

  • 15:03

    2001: A Space Odyssey

    :D

  • Honestly though I really like both versions I like the Wonka version slightly better. Charlie in Tim Burton's version suffers too much from the Superman syndrome. He's just too good from the very beginning, which makes it hard to identify with him because he shows no moral weakness whatsoever. I don't even think a Death Note could have made that kid a badass.

  • @shadowthehh2 Yeah, johnny depp is a awesome actor, i agree. But his version of willy wonka isn´t better than Gene Wilder;

And you have to agree with me, Gene Wilder was a awesome actor too.

  • @Falodetudo I think it's because Gene was the first Wonka and the apparent most recognizable version. But for me,Johnny wins hands down.......And the new version didnt have that tunnel from Hell ._. ....

  • The only thing the new movie is better, is the chocolate river.

  • I like both versions, but prefer the Willy Wonka version. I've read the book, just because Charlie is closer to the book doesn't mean automatically it makes it the better film. Charlie had several issues like Charlie Bucket is too bland and too much of a goodie goodie. Willy Wonka by Johnny was too awkward to be entertained with. With two of the lead characters not being relatable, you can't get into the remake as much as the original.

  • dislike for the old Willy winning.

I mean CMON! The new one is Johnny FUCKING Depp you dumbass!

  • @shadowthehh2 Wait. Did you just diss Gene Wilder. The Gene Wilder....Oh, it might be Johnny Depp, I like him too, but he was not made to play this part.

  • "WHEN" Tim Burton re-imagines stuff? Isn't that all he does anymore?

  • Nostalgia has nothing to do with my belief that Charlie relied too much on special effects and how amazing everything looked and not enough on everything else. Also, I liked how in the original, Wonka would say things like "where is fancy bred in the heart or in the head?" Made him more interesting. While all of Depp's quotes just seem childish and silly. He also acts.. a bit like a jerk. An apathetic, uninterested jerk. I suppose it's a good movie. Just doesn't live up to the original, IMO.

  • I like both versions, but Burton's version did three things better:the unspecified location of the story, the chocolate river, and the Oompa-loompa songs.

Truth be told,I've never liked those shmaltzy, preachy songs in the original, and we have to listen to it four times!

Whereas,Danny Elfman--WOW--he took Roald Dahl's original text and really went to town!

Also love the bit with Prince Pondicherry and his chocolate palace.

  • Yeah I couldn't disagree more with the Critic on this one. I thought the newer version was substantially better, there was more back story so you knew what the fuck was going on:

-You learned where the Umpa Lumpa's came from and why they worked for wonka

-You knew why Wonka was the way he was

-You knew more about each kid and why they where the way they where

-You got an ending that made a bit more sense and was, typically, more satisfying I think.

I felt like the first left a ton of questions

  • I like Depp, but that version wasn't that good.

  • It's funny because I thought the Charlie And The Choclate Factory was a sequel because the kid in the first one was Charlie, and I didnt know what the other kid's name was, it sucked

  • The Book =D

  • BOTH were good.

  • @baahhhFATALITY11 In my honest opinion.

  • I like both versions because in willy wonka and the chocolate factory we know more about charlie then we do about willy wonka. In charlie in the chocolate factory we go into more detail of willy wonka's story

  • You can't beat the original, the first one one was just a timeless classic, unforgettable. The new one was, to me in my opinion, bad because Charlie was politically correct.

  • Hmm i would have liked the new verson more if they didnt get a shitty Director.

  • @DocKing236 :O what did you say? tim burton directed it and he made really good movies like edward siccorhands and batman and nightmare before christmas

  • @LegoKing345 Your right batman was good ....those other movies are a disgrace to humanity.

  • I like the new one because it is closer to the book. I loved the book. The older one I disliked the songs and was going "WHERE ARE THE SQUIRRELS?!". *shrug*

  • Also, Charlie was supposed to be a perfect angel. And the Depp version used the original lyrics from the book.

  • @armagod679 Even so, Charlie being perfect... doesn't exactly seem human, no one's perfect and we're all victim to temptation and selfishness, that's how we are as human beings; flawed. As such, I think Charlie is better done in the original as opposed to the Tim Burton version

  • @TheAstuteConman Dahl's purpose was to create a role model for children in Charlie Bucket. And I don't think he really was too good in the new version. He was just a good boy who did as he was told and valued his family above his dreams. What's wrong with that?

  • @armagod679 That being so, Charlie being how he is in the first just seems more believable to me, that's all.

If you think otherwise, no problem with that, but I just think it makes Charlie more human.

  • I honestly don't like either Wilder or Depp as Wonka. When Matt Smith does a version, I'll be first in line.

  • The original version is the best hands down and i agree with what the critic is right. Like the original does focus on charlie like it should and not wonka like the new verison does. And gene wilder did a better job as wonka when deep showed up in the new version i just wanted to shoot myself in the face over and over again.

  • I personally think that the newer movie focused more the on the insane madness type of book while the original was more meant to be whimsical and fantasy like.

I personally preferred the original since it seemed a little more willing to take chances and wouldn't scare very young viewers. I also just liked Wilder more as Wonka

  • I like the new movie, I have to admit, I kinda like Wonka's new theme and don't find it that annoying. Some of Depp's performance is weird, but I still laugh at the scenes where he crashes into the elevator. But without a doubt in my mind, I still think the old is a lot better.

  • I actually liked the new charlie and I dont think he acted out of character at all. I mean come on the kid is growing up in a house that tilted over with a hole in the roof right over his bed and it's snowing constantly and the only thing he has to eat is hot water with a small amount of cabbage in it. I dont know of any better cercumstances that would breed humbleness in someone, much less a kid.

  • the old one is so much better it's scary

  • 00:38 is it me or dows that oompaloompa look like ryan from the office

  • i LOVE the doug reference

  • Woah in the end it's Douchy mcNitpickXD!!!!

  • I read the book, & I book seems to have more of a similar tone 2 the remake than the 1st 1 but I STILL like the original better:\... it has more charm. Exceptthe tunnel, that gave me nightmares... Although the dollsong was almost as creepy. The songs in the remake r closer to the book songs though which I like but the original songs r classic

  • It's scrumdiddlyumptious :)

  • thumbs up if you're eating chocolate while watching this

  • I thought the new version was ok, except for Johnny Depp as Willy Wonka. The kids are alright in the new movie.

  • The doll song was just plain old weird... Every time I c the doll song I wanna gouge my eyes out

  • I loved the original & i luv yah Johnny depp but u were seriously creepy. I mean he was funny but in a creepy way plus the whole movie just had a creepy feel

  • The songs in the remake had the lyrics that were in the book.

  • New movie better

  • Do people really find it hard to say "scrumdiddlyumptious"? I find it quite easy...

  • @CultureClasher

lol! It's weird you say that, because to me it was always Gene Wilder that was giving off all those creepy kinda awkward pedophile vibes....Though, not to say that Johnny Depp's Wonka wasn't a certifiably nuts weirdo in his own way....lol! XD

  • The reason that the titles and songs are different is because the TB one is based off the book by Roald Dahl more than the Wonka version. Even the songs in the TB version were actually featured in the book instead of just the same monotone song over and over.

  • I wanted to like the new version, I really did but like you said I don't know what Johnny Depp is trying to do :| It's awkward and not in a funny way.

  • 16:25Nostalgia critic flipping out! hahaha LOL xD

  • 6:02 shut up!

  • Hands mutha fucking down. The original was the better movie. The only thing i hated about the original was that song when the mother was washing the family's clothes. It was boring, pointless and really didn't need to be there.

  • id it me or does johnny depp kinda seem like Jim Carey in the '90s. and 70's is disco, 60s is hippie. get the decades right

  • OH MY GOD WHAT THE HELL WAS THAT THING TO THE LEFT AT 4:11

  • 3:28

    Best Nostalgia Critic line ever

  • 2:12 That be a cool crossfiction Willy wonka and James Bond

  • I totally agree about Willy wonka even though Johonny Depp is awesome.

And Yeh I gotta agree about charlie even though I frequently call Freddie Highmore one of my favourite child actors, but yeh the way the character is written remindes me a bit to much perfect peter.

I'm really love this review cause it brings up almost every thing that I said after I saw the new movie, the good and the bad.

    Thanks Critic :D

  • I can't really tell which is better...I have mixed feelings about both. In the beginning of the old one, it's kinda slow and boring. In the new one, it's a bit more entertaining all through. However, the Willy Wonka from the old version is much more entertaining and funny than the new one. Johnny Depp is really, really awkward and not that funny. Also, in the old one, the chocolate factory feels much more memorable, but that might just be because I watched it billions of times as a kid.

  • i prefer the new version, i think its pretty funny and creative plus it does follow a lot of points from the book, besides, do you remember an egg room in the book? the new film used the nut room from the book

  • CLASSIC ALWAYS WINS.... V

  • I personally LOVED the second one better. :) Watching the first one as a kid, Willy Wonka scared me and the whole movie never really interested me. Watching the second one like a year later I remembered I loved it and Willy Wonka was creepy but funny :)

  • Though both versions have their own place in my heart, I feel the new version reflects more of the madness in the book. Generally most of the hate for the new film seems to stem from being blinded by nostalgia rather than the fact the film is actually bad. If I'm talking to someone who hates it and hasn't read the book, I don't give a shit what they have to say because they haven't even bothered to read the source material before making up their minds.

  • @MsFrazzledFro I've never read the book, and I find the newer one better, and also the old one kinda scares me...0_o

  • @MsFrazzledFro The Burton remake had its ups and downs. I like the modern style it has, as well as how the effects work within the boundaries of Wonka's factory and everything it holds. And while I do like Depp and the films he's been in, his performance was very awkward and nothing special. He does have a few good gags, but most of the time, it's hard to take him seriously. On the whole, the Wonka remake is still a decent film to watch despite some flaws.

  • @MsFrazzledFro just because the depp version follows the book does not make it a better movie yes having source material is a good thing in a movie but how you act the movie can change how good it is the way depp acted was very bad almost laughable in fact it was laughable and charlie was supposed to model a good kid but the way you can portray a character in a book and in a movie are totally different because a book is intended to be fake but you have to make it realistic at least in emotions.

  • @AZNGAMING4LIFE ...Do you have an aversion to periods or something? I couldn't follow what you were trying to say at all. And "a book is intended to be fake"? The hell does that even mean? It's fiction, of course it's supposed to be fake. Movies are intended to be fake too.

From this, I have gathered that you have indeed never read the book. Either book.

  • "Can't you see? It makes everlasting gobstoppers"

No, it makes midget versions of those annoying little plastic puzzles!

    (That was my reaction)

  • Ha ha ha love the ending! Best Looney Tunes reference I've seen

  • the only thing i like about Charlie chocolate factory is the way the actual factory looks

  • We actually have real life Wonka-brand sweets in my country.

They're just not nearly as imaginative.

  • Isnt Johnny Depp like michael jackson? 1. FREAKIN surreal face 2. Fucked up childhood 3. lures children to see him and hates their parents

  • Fuck. U r funny as shit! Gna subscribe

  • First wonka was way better

  • I actually LOVE both versions of the movie...though each movie I love for different reasons so each one can be respected on their own terms

  • i never found deep that annoying, i just filed it as 'jokes they are trying to tell but only a very little kid will even consider funny' and then the other ones were so random i just laughed at that like

    'you smell like chocolate,'

'hehe........and you smell like old person'

  • I prefer the new version because a) I admit I'm a little bit biased towards anything by Tim Burton and b) the boat ride in the old one scared the hell out of me. Who puts footage of man-eating giant worms in a tunnel in a chocolate factory?

  • Should the old one be named Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and the new one named Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.

  • I don't give a flying rat's ass if the new one was more true to the book. The original film is a better movie in general.

  • 8:31 Oh look, it's Komodo from "Warriors of Virtue"

  • OMG I FRICKING LOVE THIS GUY!! xDLMAO

  • He got the 60's and 70's music mixed up (disco and hippie) or maybe Tim Burton did. Minus one point for the new in that regard.

  • 13:03 The Charlie film was also made some 35 years later...

But the old one is far better, the songs are great, very enjoyable (the oompa loompa songs are classic stuff), the children aren't freaking brats who annoy you in the few seconds after their appearance, Charlie is much more interesting (I prefer the old look too) and Wonka isn't just some creep. About the visuals, you forgot to mention the tunnel scene, one of the greatest scenes ever in a movie. Definitely, the old Wonka movie FTW.

  • The ending is fucking hilarious! Duck Amuck ending!

  • oh my god, I finally found the fucking source of the music that's been on loop in the back of my head for my entire life! WTH, did I watch this movie as a baby and it just imprinted itself forever into my brain?

  • i fucking love johnny depp, but i hate him in charlie and the chocolate factory >:(

  • The line about veruca being a wart on your foot is an exact line from the original book... Yeah I read it.

  • Just like the nostalgia critic, When I saw the trailer for charlie and the chocolate fatcory I thought it would suck too. And every time i'd watch cartoon network on deamand they'd show a clip from the movie before the show started. And then one time at my school, We were having a party and they decided to play a movie and it was the same exact film. Since we were all sitting on the floor, I walked back to my desk and laid my head down cause I did not want to see it.

  • Damn you, Douchey McNitpick, damn you to hell!!

  • If you've ever seen that shapeshifting geometric shape on a Windows 98 PC, then you've seen a 70s-era Gobbstopper.

Btw, I preferred the practical special effects of the original as opposed to the CGI of the remake. The realism of the physical props keep you in the story more than the CGI models, which looks too smooth, fluid, and weightless. Plus, the CGI takes even the surreal scenes a bit over the top.

  • How did I know the last song would be Doug?

  • I disagree with the critic. Both of the movies are good, each in their own ways. I thought Depp did a good job in his role, no matter what anybody says. He's just a little inconsistent.

  • what was the last song?

  • johnny looks like michael jackson

  • the chocolate river is actually chocolate! in thee charlie version

  • @CultureClasher gene wilders response to johnny depp

YOU GET NOTHING!!! YOU LOSE!!! GOOD DAY SIR!!!

  • 12:27 I laughed so fuckin Hard XD

  • lol at the Doug music at the end.

"Hey Funnie! Find that neam-ma-toad yet?"

  • Does anyone notice that Willy Wonka from 2005 looks like Michael Jackson? I'm surprised the parents didn't suddenly try to protect the children . . .

  • also i thought JD was a more believable WW then GW was because you could always tell he was acting and it was kind of forced

  • THATS a fucking oompa loompa!

  • Please dont hate this but i think i like the new installment better just because i cant seem to sit through the original

  • @MikeDreeveDX also i read the book prior to seeing either and from what i can tell the new comes closer to the book then the old one did and that makes me think that they were wanting to make a movie aboiut the book but had to call it something different .

  • oompa lompas look like tarantino

  • The Gene Wilder version is definietly the superior version over the Tim Burton remake. Do an Old vs. New on Alice in Wonderland.

  • I got Gene wilder's signature at a nordrom once! He sign my VHS copy of willy wonka

  • wasn't disco from the 70's and the hippies from the 60's?

  • I think it would have been funnier if it was AVGN messing with the critic at the end.

their relationship is kind of like bugs bunny and daffy duck. Only angrier

  • Say what you will, but I personally enjoyed them both. That is, except for Wonka's Hell tunnel, that was a plus for the new film, leaving it out. If any other filmmaker wants to re-imagine this classic book, no Hell tunnel, please. In fact, let's leave this classic be.

  • DOUCHIE!!!!!!!!!!

  • both terrifying. Book all the way.

  • original is so much better!!!!

  • I wasn't a remake, it was just a diffrent adaptation of the same book and to be honest a closuser one

  • we get it u like wonka better !!!!!!!!!!!

  • @12:12 hint hint

  • Some people seem to think that because the new version is more true to the book, it's a better movie. Not so much. That's like saying that the tv miniseries version of The Shining is better than the Kubrick movie because it's more faithful to the book.

  • Comment removed

  • 60's Disco song and a 70's hippy song?

  • I liked Charlie & the chocolate factory. Great film.

  • i think depp's a great actor, but his performance as wonka is absolutely horrendous. he just took a great character who gene had already perfectly brought to life, and fucking murdered him. i can't stand this movie, mostly cuz of the way he sucks the life out of it.

  • Funny, cos when that movie first came out I heard that people were saying things like "OH MY GOD, DEPP IS SO AWESOME IN THIS, WONKA IS LIKE HIS GREATEST ROLE EVER!"

Although now I think about it, that was probably all those Depp fanboys/girls who say that about everything he's been in!
