Thanks for putting up this video... I thought i had lost a gem of a recording... used to have a videotape of this in the early 80's but it got irreversibly damaged... this came from a documentary "A Life in the countryside"? he did with other well known guitarists including John Williams and Paco Pena, and his exclusive guitar maker at that time, Jose Romanillos. This traces his early life and shows many sides of his character... great video! Thanks again...
Quite possibly, the greatest guitar player who ever lived. His technique encompasses so many varied genres - classical, baroque, romantic, steel-string, jazz, and international. Behemoth of guitar.
I once got a letter from Julian Bream in response to one I sent him. He's a genius, yet he is also a humble and fun-loving sort of man. I don't really think he judges people and their taste in music a lot...but he does love the lute and guitar and he is glad for having had such a fine musical career. I often pray for him since I really can't put the love and admiration I have for this man and his music into words very well.
I just added it to my favourites, if it makes you feel better. Sadly, lute has become a punchline. Sting's cd duetting with a marvelous lutenist cost him credibility instead of enhancing it. Gotta have the street cred at all cost. Well....I own that cd.
I could say that theres three instruments...which can be called kings of all music....:Piano,Guitar,Violin...and here one of them...makes his appearance on the stage...absolutely amazing how this musician plays the guitar defies explanation
I almost don't hear Bream playing; I hear Bach. Bream doesn't get in the way with his own interpretation the way Segovia did, and as much as I admire the guy's work, Bream's Bach is unbeatable.
I think to uses the dislike button you should have to say why. I don't understand how you could come upon this video and dislike it. I mean if you found Bream you must be looking specifically for guitar or classical music. How could you appreciate on without the other?
Whether you are writing a 3-5 minute song or hour long orchestra, it should be written for quality, not for mass commercialism and propaganda. Too much radio music lacks creative ambition and it needs it badly. Jazz, progressive metal, and classical are all high quality musical styles that require sheer technique and musicianship to master them. Seriosly, people need to actively listen to music and admire it instead of just for getting things done! Keaggy is another great.
Mi parte favorita es desde 0:50 hasta 1:09, es algo que me hace ponerle especial atencion a la obra. Espero poder tocar asi algun dia con algo de la genialidad del maestro Bream. Si pueden escuchen la completa les va a gustar.
@MikeyIV uhhh... no. Look up guitar players like yngwie Malmsteen, Tosin Abasi and Jeff Loomis. They are classically inspired artists, as metal is mostly rooted in classical music, but metal is in no way shape or form simple with these guys.
@The34zyD lol I know those guys and I play metal and classical. Metal's definitely not simple but there is NO WAY it is more difficult than classical guitar. I play Malmstein and Paul Gilbert shredding music and, while kinda difficult, it is a walk in the park next to something like the first movement of concierto de aranjuez
@MikeyIV I have to disagree. I just watched a movement from concierto de aranjuez and I have to say that Yngwie plays more technical acoustic riffs in Black Star. Then Tosin Abasi in CAFO just blows alot of things out of the water I've seen in the last few years. Also, Jeff Loomis just is crazy in Miles of Machines, one of the most impressive songs I've heard. These guys aren't just shredding, these guys write the stuff they play. Shredding is just improving really fast hoping it sounds good.
@The34zyD You do not play classical guitar obviously and this is a stupid argument. I play the bull shit in black star and miles of machines. Aranjuez movement 1 (not even the hardest of classical guitar pieces), though it may not LOOK like it, is MUCH MUCH MUCH harder than that stuff. If you played classical guitar I would tell you to look at the sheet music. Then you would understand the technical difficulty. You must have seen a good performer that makes it look easy lol.
@InDarknessLight this is BWV 1000. if you listen to BWV 1001, you might think its the same as 1000, but bach originally wrote 1001 as a violin fugue, and he must have loved it so much he edited it as a lute fugue (1000). just a little info :)
Greetings back! Nice to hear from someone tackling the same piece. I am finding the concluding section (last twenty-odd bars) very demanding with some quite tricky stretches making it very hard to maintain a decent rhythm. At the moment I'm just clunking through them slowly. Best wishes - keep at it - Bach is always well worth all the effort expended!
This video is one of my favorites... It is definitely the Lute version of the piece, BWV 1000, not from violin sonata 1001. You can tell because there is an extra subject entrance in the bass voice at the beginning, the violin version only has 3 entrances and this one has 4.
Absolute perfection! Doesn't he make you want to burn your guitar! I have spent the best part of a year struggling with this piece and know that I will NEVER play it like this
@philipwesley4 Right this is perfection, i just started to learn this piece and this stunning performance motivates me to the utmost even if have to practice ten years or until my fingers cant do it anymore because of age. Never give up what you belive in! Greetings!
I think playing in A minor is easier than playing in G. I think Bream thinks the same. But really, amazing. still not ONE mistake. can't listen to my own playing after listening to this now..
Great video, but this is the lute version bwv 1000, not the violin sonata bwv 1001. It is very similar to the violin version, but Bach added another low voice in parts, like the fourth entrance at the very beginning.
comparing this guy to yngwie malmsteen? this guy doesn't shred because he just doesn't, not because he can't. he never wasted his time learning to play like that because its a waste.
@trismegian -------------------fuga from violin sonata 1 ( in gm originally ) BWV 1001 .
He takes a few liberties with the score , mainly for / due to guitaristic idiosyncratic tendencies , but it's pretty faithful to the original work overall . His personal timbres and shading are hard to beat ,even though some of the base technique isn't altogether perfect .
what impresses me is his memory. some of his bach recitals that are 13 and 15 minutes long especially. amazing player that i have only been introduced to. lots of respect for the man
This video has been up here for over 4 years and has about 300,000 hits. Some dude posts a video of himself shirtless lipsynching an SNL skit and he's got 2 mil hits in less than a week. Sad.

@pragmaticpessimist Not too hard to find the sheet music in the key of A. I rarely see it in the key of Gminor, however. I have this most beautiful piece in A minor. Julian Bream is an inspiration, a genius, and a musical giant.
I never get tired of listening to this. Julian Bream seems to make pieces sound just that bit more "musical" than most other guitarists. Fantastic stuff!
Hi - I went to school with Julian Bream - Rectory Farm School, Hampton - we played in the School Concert - we were both 14. I played the violin, and Julian on his Guitar - I was awful and he was BRILLIANT. Happy Days. - - Ken
@shepherd241 I heard that he has sold his lovely house in Semply and moved to a transitional home. He must miss that place nearly as much to his playing of old! The greatest pioneer for the guitar after Segovia
@Pipixcan1 In an interview on British Radio 3 . Julian Bream said that he has sold his house to provide funds for scholaships for music students at the Royal College Of Music and for composers to write new music for the guitar. He said he wanted to give something back to the music .I think that is a real measure of this great Artist.
@shepherd241 Would you be so kind as to tell us something about Julian Bream as an individual? He is an inspiration to all guitarists and his musicality is profound. A musical giant.
I love the way he always put his heart into his playing. You can see from the look on his face when he is playing he is totally commited to his playing. Wonderful.
@newFranzFerencLiszt 1000. Bach actually wrote a fugue nearly identical to this, 1001, and i guess he liked it so much he changed it a little. personally i think both are equal; they surpass measurement.
There is also a version in G minor for guitar for those who like to complicate your life. I prefer to tune all the strings in the sixth base in D, is the same.
i can not even pop guitar and when i watch this man i want to give it up....awesome billions time..how we must study to play like that i dont know....but i know that i never can play a classic on my guitar like that....for best i should try my composes:))
@oddursb i can play this piece in my sleep (ok in my dreams) superb music by Bach and Superb playing by Julian Bream . Middle age Old age Youth this man can play Guitar.
Yeah, you're totally right. But some genius have more "impact" or influence ... (To me, Bach has left a lot of influence in a lot of kind of music) But I really like your definition of music, Friendly.
@globule200 Perhaps, but I think more precisely each note that Bream plays is felt in his heart and soul. He imbues each phrase with its own colors and weight, or reflection. Bream's musical sense is astounding because it is seamless.
Richie Blackmore is an ICON. As a teen he got me to fall in love with the guitar and it's potential - hence my love of J.S.Bach and Paganini. As well, of course, as the man himself. ;-)
there is literally a world of difference between classical music and rock with classical influences. A world. It's julliard vs. berklee. Malmsteen marked an era? Which one? Everyone in england knows who bream is. Do you know how monstrous a feat that is? He is a national celebritiy and he is a classical guitarist. That in itself is just mad. Malmsteen took an intrument, did nothing new with it, and appealed to the same crowd. That's not a new era, that's just the next thing.
@jonniejc I say you are right but when it comes to Yngwie's shredding Bream cannot do what Yngwie can do with electric but Bream surely does beat Yngwie on Classical
i went and read about it actually yesterday, I think Bach used it for both violin work and Lute work... Bach did that a lot with some of his tunes where he copies the exact thing into a different set of work. cuz his works are mainly studies so it would make sense i guess..I dont want to say more because i still have to do the research but its a possibility since I've heard 3 versions of it (violin, lute, and guitar). all are equally amazing but guitar has a different flavor :D
There is a lot of pretentious dancing on pin-heads when people start talking about art. In all its forms, it seems to attract the pedants and obssessives and ego maniacs who think their sensibilities unique or more finely honed than the rest of us.
Don't you guys ever catch a glimpse of yourselves and cringe?
Just listen to the feckin music and cop on to yersleves willya! There is nothing magical about your ears, we all have them.
Oh I'm afraid that we do hear the same thing and if you engage your brain before you engage the keyboard you would realize that I'm right.
A simple test with any group will show that if a sequence of notes is played to them individually they will be able to sing them back as they were played pretty much as they were played. Now that involves them hearing, interpreting and replaying those notes. Nearly all children within their vocal capabilities will replay those notes the same. QED
I think he would play more relaxed if he took that suit jacket off ... is that a Fleta guitar? anyone ? he does not have an amazing sound but nails the groove in the music which makes it all very beautiful and musical ..... bravo JB

Anyone know where I can find the sheet music for this arrangement?
Also, Bream blows my mind.

It's available in any number of publications containing the Bach Lute Suites.

Julian Bream is to the guitar what E. Power Biggs is to the organ; incomparable! Beautiful! (Segovia does nicely with Bach, also. Great post.

It's so totally fkn awesone that I could fk myself. J.B. kicks so many sorts of ass, totally man!
Ég hata homma & svertingja!
What J.B. did for the guitar compares with what Shakespere contributed to the theatre!
Motherfucker!

Why doesn't Malmsteen take a classical one and try to play against me??? This is more fair, I believe...

I recommend hearing the other video that was uploaded by MonteverdiXVI.
It's much better sound quality for this wonderfull playing.

Yeah, you're totally right. But some genius have more "impact" or influence ... (To me, Bach has left a lot of influence in a lot of kind of music) But I really like your definition of music, Friendly.

Why are people discussing about neo-metal below a video of a guitarist playing Bach? What's the link?
I do like this video. :)
Disciplined to get this tone.
Mathidal 2 years ago 5
Maybe because Bach is the base of all the music which exists now no ?
I like Bream's way of playing these notes ... each note is "calculated", or thought ...
globule200 2 years ago 3
I wouldn't say that. Music isn't only an invention of Bach, but an invention of many many people.
But Bach had a great influance, but he's not the only one. ;)
Mathidal 2 years ago 3
@globule200 Perhaps, but I think more precisely each note that Bream plays is felt in his heart and soul. He imbues each phrase with its own colors and weight, or reflection. Bream's musical sense is astounding because it is seamless.

regardless, this is great, beautiful - why fight? Why argue? Better to be transported by this esoteric melodious music

try telling benjamin britten or stravinsky that malmsteem is an icon. which group do i care more about?
thejugglenaut91 2 years ago 2
Richie Blackmore is an ICON. As a teen he got me to fall in love with the guitar and it's potential - hence my love of J.S.Bach and Paganini. As well, of course, as the man himself. ;-)
mikegotteri 2 years ago
there is literally a world of difference between classical music and rock with classical influences. That's not a new era, that's just the next thing.
thejugglenaut91 2 years ago 2
Sorry but Yngwie Malmsteen is not in the same league as Bream, therefore you should talk about him outside of this video.
jonniejc 2 years ago 19
This comment has received too many negative votes show
Yngwie Malmsteen.
kierkegaardrulez 2 years ago
@jonniejc I say you are right but when it comes to Yngwie's shredding Bream cannot do what Yngwie can do with electric but Bream surely does beat Yngwie on Classical
anival2sorto 1 year ago
@anival2sorto But ask yourself if JB would want to do what Yngwie 'does'. I suspect not, whereas Yngwie would no doubt love to play like JB.
DoodlesMusic 1 year ago
@DoodlesMusic I believe Yngwie has played JB songs especially Jason Becker for Jason has studied the works of JB
anival2sorto 1 year ago
Malmsteen is terrible at what he does though.
Even his "neo-classical shred" thing, which everyone credits him isnt his idea.
Ritchie Blackmoore was playing real fast classical inspired lines much before Malmsteen.
Yngwie is just a fat talentless sack of lard who cant even play his own songs anymore.

search Bach fugue in A minor. BWV g 1000
its originally written for lute so make sure u get guitar sheets
Mkamalid 2 years ago 2
I think really this piece is for solo violin... ????
japenagosc 2 years ago
i went and read about it actually yesterday, I think Bach used it for both violin work and Lute work...

Mkamalid:
Oh I'm afraid that we do hear the same thing and if you engage your brain before you engage the keyboard you would realize that I'm right.
A simple test with any group will show that if a sequence of notes is played to them individually they will be able to sing them back as they were played pretty much as they were played. Now that involves them hearing, interpreting and replaying those notes. Nearly all children within their vocal capabilities will replay those notes the same. QED
