"Deep Dark Truthful Mirror" one day you're going to have to face a deep dark truthful mirror and it's going to tell you things that i still love you too much to say the sky was just a purple bruise, the ground was iron and you fell all around the town until you looked the same (chorus) the same eyes, the same lips, the same lie from your tongue trips deep dark, deep dark truthful mirror deep dark, deep dark truthful mirror now the flagstone streets where the newspaper shouts ring to the boot
The very first MTV Unplugged featured The Smithereens and Graham Parker. Graham Parker was Elvis' "Pub Rock" rival at first. Now Elvis is the Dostoyevsky to Graham's Turgenev. I"m sure there's no greater song that's ever been played in a Rock Hall induction. The band has more sensibility than a 30 piece symphony.
This is my favorite Elvis Costello song!!! I remember when he performed it on MTV Unplugged~ahhh the Good ole days!!! Thank goodness I bought every CD of MTV unplugged~wish that version was on youtube!!! Does anyone remember those wonderful days of Unplugged and all MTV did was play videos?
the soviets ability to go toe to toe with niggas from britian is quite remarkable to this day and we turn to nationalisation while they open fire on their own capitol building not to mention the unresolved liquid assets the csars corps wishes he still controlled nevermind the worlds third largest oil resereve long live the mirror bless &long live the king
i was at a show in philly last year and he didnt play that, of course we got lost and got there and hour late, and only caught 5 songs, so im just gonna shut the fuck up and take your word for it...
Why would a good man wish this upon another?

Questioning this song? He does it in every live show, since it came out. 20 years ago. It is gorgeous and the melody is unparalled.

The lyrics of this song don't make any sense, but I think they're absolutely gorgeous. Up there with "the movement you need is on your shoulder."

Thanks for posting a great version of this song.
A wonderful song with perhaps the worst lyrics to date.

FYI, he's said in about 500 interviews that the lyrics you cited (and more) are coming from a drunk person who's hallucinating...
