  • hey just start the motor and start shaving hehe

  • How come when you're young it seems like you can rebuilt an engine with not much more than a hammer and a screwdriver?

  • Doesn't the oil flinger piece throw out the crank balance on high rpms?

  • And does this motor you built still run?

  • I want to do this to an OHV engine. Will this get enough oil to the top end? I was wondering if I could attach some hose from the PCV to the valve cover and that would provide enough oil, but I'm not too sure.

  • That thing looks like hell - and runs great! Kudos - gives me hope I can do my own.

  • ik right! i was like wow...

  • dude..... props

  • How would you go about putting a clutch on it?

  • @Thatguy5806 id say use a mill if there is no key way. if theres a key way, then measure it, go to princess auto or whatever, and buy the correct size clutch.

  • I have a twenty horse motor from a riding lawnmower can I use the same steps to convert it to horizontal from verticle

  • @Cody1991lynch Yes you should be able to. there is a mechanical geverner on your kind of engine instead of the air vane type on this. also most ride-on engines have the pcv tube just running free or connected to the carburetor. there are a few differences that you are going to have to work out.

  • I have a 20 horse power motor which is vertical do I do the same steps to convert pls help

  • Hi, what about a 2 stroke engine? Is it just a matter of twisting the carb 90 degrees?

  • What a great job!But just that modification on the crankcase is enough to run the engine without blowing it up?

  • thers better ways to convert them even kits.

  • No way that dipper is gonna last as it bends on each stroke ,the real ones are installed side ways and the sling enough ,good luck though .

  • "tooob" lol

  • hey can u show me how u connect the red tub and how the troddle will work if i put a peddle on the front of a go kart please help man i cant find a go kart engine please

  • what happend to the 2 things u took out next to the shaft time u did it 6:00to 6:10

  • You did a great job, but i did a conversion like that six years ago without changing anything on the oiling system. I just keep the oil level at the right height so that the original splasher gets oil. It`s still running.

  • on the hose attached to the carborator were does the other side of the hose go into?

  • i've done it before, i used a side cover from a side shaft plus a stick' oil dipper plus a weighted flywheel, very important get a flywheel from a sideshaft motor or add bolts for weights around it. if you use the motor bottom, you will have to cut it .so ya can sit it down, and find a way to bolt it down.have fun!

  • Dose the engine still work after a few months, as i would like to try it but i dont want to do it if in 6 months it will stop working

  • dont really need the tube ive got my brigs clean power 40 running good with out it. the crankcase vent i mean

  • ...I failed

  • Gonna try this today

  • That is awesome custom one of a kind. I have a vertical shaft Honda 5.5hp OHC engine. I want to mount it to my home made bike I made. I had a horizontal Briggs 2hp engine. Than I got a vertical shaft. Use a belt and make it twist to horizontal pulley through the bike pedal crank as a jack shaft now. Bike will be done soon. Check my channel and you're see the bike in the back ground.

    Nice conversion!!

  • how did you get it to run without a blade?

  • just wanted to say that it is nice of you to help these people out keep it up

  • ahh, i did all of this, and the engine ran great, on the first run, but on the second it backfired, then I was able to start it, it ran for 2 seconds and threw a rod, blasted out the side of the block, was too bad :(

  • @CHRISANDELLIOT123 oil slinger didnt work well...

  • well i fully coverted my motor and like the oil sligger i put keeps breakn while the engine is runnig... what type of metal did u use to prevent the oil slinger from breaking,

  • @DiZkId3121 i just used sheet metal

  • @DiZkId3121 it might be touching some thing inside...

  • HOW MUCH MONEY DO YOU HAVE TOTAL IN THE MOTOTR

  • @DiZkId3121 @bitmannz I was interested this because of the Eggmotor PPG 6.5 hp conversion project. I thought it might be good to try a vertical conversion because of

a larger bearing surface would take the propeller vibration better than the horizontal

shaft engines. Easier to use lawnmower blade flanges for a prop flange.

A 6.5 direct drive paramotor with some added upgrades(high flow air cleaner, drilled out carb jet, high flow muffler, ground head, , etc) would need to get about 14 hp.

  • @Miner4aheartofgold You would need the upgraded cam to get it. Woulde cams for the horizontal

gokart engines would work in the vertical? Otherwise you'd have to weld and grind your own cam. Thats pretty much into pro territory...

Would a stock oil dipper work from a similar engine?

I wonder if it would improve reliability if you added a little baffle to keep more oil around

the main bearing. It normally would be completely submerged. Wouldn't want it

the least bit starved for oil.

  • is definitely lack of flywheel with no blade, same thing happen when I tried to start a lawnmower I working on without a blade, timing advance fixed needs enough flywheel to carry rotation past firing point or it'll backfire and rip starting cord out of your hand or snap your wrist

  • Hi

I just got another problem now with my briggs&stratton engine.

when i try to start it it just backfires rip the pull cord out of my hand.

i saw that someone else already have askt this question and you said to chek the flywheel and chek the enigns timing. the things is that i have not even touched the flywheel and my engine is timed.

Do you know whats wrong with it?

  • @MrDannen25 if you know the cam timing is good, the spark is good, and the carb mixture is good, often something happens which causes backfires and massive recoils. sometimes the flywheel key gets sheared and that throws the spark timing off. the best way to check this is to remove the flywheel and look at the key which aligns it to the crank

  • @MrDannen25 lack of a lawnmower blade. lawnmower engines are designed with lightweight aluminum flywheel because blade acts as a heavier flywheel bringing tha engine past the point where plug fires.

  • @ismokewead420 add something heavy to your crankshaft.

  • @MrDannen25 sounds to me like it has alot of compression if it was a chain saw i would say get the compression release

  • @MrDannen25 the flywheel is too light, on push mowers the blade acts as a flywheel so they lighten the engine flywheel to copensate

  • @MrDannen25 the fly wheel is to light. many lawnmower engines use the blade to act like a fly wheel weight. horizontal engines have heavyer fly wheels

  • add a dipper to splash oil and get a 90degree atachment for carb

  • Hi

I have removed the bottom cover and removed the camshaft and mounted a sheet metal and turned the crankshaft and it dosen't touch anything but i don't know how to time the engine again, can you please explain how to do this?

    Thanks

  • @MrDannen25 if you look closely at the face of the gear on the crankshaft, there should be a little mark pointing at one of the teeth, on the camshaft gear look for a little hole drilled right next to one of the teeth of the gear. if you line those two marks up, when you install the cam, your engine will be timed.

  • trololol

  • this is so cool, very very helpful

  • 3:32 turn the intake pipe 180 drgrees and run the carb the other side. this can be done because i have done it before

  • Sometimes when we pull the rope it will kick back so I was going to put a 5 horse flywheel on it

  • What about the flywheel, how does it continue to run without the mowerblade?

  • I put a new thicker piece in and it still smokes when I turn it off... would you be able to tell me what it is?

  • @456sampson if you turn the engine off and it still smokes, maybe some oil got in the muffler and it keeps smoking because it's still hot

  • Ok I opened it up and the piece of sheet metal broke

  • I have a problem.I put the piece of sheel metal on the crank shaft and put oil in the engine and it won't smoke but when it shuts off there is smoke comming from the head and the muffler.

  • If you install it into a go kart could you please upload a vid because I want to know how to attach it to the wheels to make them turn? Also how to then connect the accelerator and breaks and does it matter which side that you make it go horizontal (like which way you rotate the petrol tank)? Thanks man!

  • @UrbanNinjaDude95 well, I really only did this conversion for the sake of seeing if it will work, and it does. I do have a go kart, but I already have an engine on it (a honda gx160) Currently I am at my university, and all my engines and tools are back home. I do plan on making a video answering questions about go karts, but it may not be made for a couple of weeks. be patient, I will make a video I just need to find time!

  • @kougsohv9 awesome thanks but just really quick can you say which way is best to make it go horizontal (turn the petrol tank) as I am starting this project in a few days but it will be a while before I even think about buying a go kart frame.

  • wat size piece of metal did u use to keep the oil going like how wide

  • What does the tube that you removed at 2 minutes and 58 seconds do and why do you not need it for the go kart? Also how do you tell what horsepower your engine is and whether it is vertical or horizontal? Thanks

  • @UrbanNinjaDude95 oh thats the crankcase ventilation tube, it keeps pressure from building up in the crankcase. usually it's vented into the carburetor, i re routed a long hose to connect it back up after moving the carb so it would still work. you should still keep it for a go kart engine, it's the governor you do not want. i'm going to say it has the same hp as when it was vertical

  • Comment removed

  • what kind of engine is this and can u get around the smashing of the gas tank and whats the rod that u plled out

  • @happyflaapy briggs and stratton... at what time during the vid?

  • "we'll just have to crush this in somehow...if I could only find a hammer around hereBAM BAM BAM." Nice vid.

  • @kougsohv9 How did you get the nut off the flywheel, i have a B&S engine and don't have any fancy tools to get the nut off. Any suggestions on how to do it? also how di did you get the bit off that the lawnmowers blades attact to off? your input would be appreciated.

  • @fireball570 type in how to take off a lown mower blade an it will help u

  • Followed this and worked! Thanks!

  • @Violinrockify good to hear!

  • would you sell and if for what price

  • There is another video here that goes into the lubrication differences between a H shaft engine & a V shaft engine. Worth a look for those wanting to get the longest run possible from their conversion

  • I have 2x 200cc Mountfield RM55 engines. They are vertical engines. Do you think it would be possible to use this method to create a V-twin engine for an off-road type buggy?? thanks!

  • @BrettFoster2010 it would not be difficult to convert one to a horizontal configuration, but to make them into a v-twin would be difficult. you would have to precisely weld the two blocks together, somehow machine a crankshaft that accepts both connecting rods, and somehow set up a valvetrain system with the cams, not to mention timing the magnetos off of one flywheel. I imagine it would be a nightmare to engineer it. it would be much more economical to convert to single cyl, or buy a used vtwin

  • thanks man, great video

  • @1mrunforgetable U evidently didn't watch the video, or U wouldn't have asked a stupid question. Watch the video & learn, sheese.

  • Hey thanks a lot! I can get these kind of engines for cheap or free because they are obsolete and often sat up. People won't give away H shaft engines though! I would suggest making the dipper out of something very strong though bc. if it "lets go" it will be bad news and bad music for that motor. I like how you used the stock tank! I put a motor bicycle carb and remote tank on a tiller. I bet it would be very easy to use the carb on that engine because it already has a protruding tube aroun

  • @yard1sale1dale protruding tube around the same size, and you could just run a rubber hose to move it to a desired location. Good video! Thanks.

  • Hi I've got a go cart im building and i'm a first timer that dosn't know much. Im just finishing up the frame and starting the engine on the flexible tubing how exactly did you connect it and where?

  • @qsezxwad12 from my experience, the piece of metal where the blade mounts is difficult to remove because it rists on there quite well. heat and penetrant oil sometimes works (make sure you only heat the piece you want to remove, and try not to hit the oil seal on the block with heat) if all else fails, I usually just cut the piece off carefully with an angle grinder to avoid damaging the crank.

  • @kougsohv9 Try transmission fluid with silicone spray mixed in it, squirted into the area above the crankshaft adapter. Let it sit a few hours in the sun or hot room. It will probably fall off.

  • Hi, I've got a briggs 6.5 hp lawn mower, vertical shaft, engine and I'm trying to change it over to horizontal shaft. I have a question about what one part is on the engine. It is a small diameter rod that has 1 coil in it and was attached to the carburetor. It then goes down towards the bottom of the fly wheel and hits an arm that moves something inside the engine block. Do have any idea what it might be? Idk what it is.

  • @techwizard125 yes that links the carburetor to the mechanical governor. inside the block, there will be a small plastic gear which has flyweights attached to it. it is the equivalent to the plastic vane i removed from the engine in this video. if you are doing the conversion for a kart, you won't need the governor system. so you can safely remove that link and the gear inside the block, I'd leave the arm and the rod that goes through the block so there is no hole where you removed it from.

  • @techwizard125 stay tuned for this weekend, I will make a video where i answer many questions in depth.

  • Srry accidently disliked whoops.....liked though.....and in your expert opinion how much hp do ineed to get a 2 seater off road go kart shocks frame and 2 ppl going 40 50 mph

  • @DestroyTheseWalls I just finished building my go kart, I may have some idea what HP you will need.

8-10 hp should be enough to get up to about 45-50 with a heavier kart. the trick is finding a gear ratio between the clutch and the axle which will give you the speed you are looking for. stay tuned, I'm going to make and post a video this weekend where I answer questions on my channel in depth.

  • Thank you so much.

  • thanks dudee

  • This is going to make life alot easier Thanks alot

  • what is that orange motor siting on the floor??

  • @SkidmoreRacing the one at 0:07? thats a air cooled Wisconsin engine out of my Bolens 1050 mower. Can't remember exactly why I decided to paint it chevy engine orange when I rebuilt it. I think the model number is TRA-10D. it's mostly made of cast iron, very heavy, but it's a very good motor

  • @SkidmoreRacing Wait, you probably are talking about the engine from 9:49 on. that's a chevy 250 ci straight six cyl out of our chevelle. again, made mostly of cast iron, extremely heavy..also another good motor,

  • @kougsohv9 yea that one thankyou

  • First of all, thank you for this great video.

I have the same engine on your vid, only need to cut out the gastank from a plastic hosing. Is it wise to remove all the fluid gasket removals? the old paper gasket, I remove was all pieces.

I bought paper and special pipes to make a new one .

Is it common to use fluid gasket on B&S?

Beneath the valves and the camshaft there is a thin plate, some sort of canal, does this not affect the oilslinger in horizontal position?

  • @McMurdo100

fluid gasket works ok on briggs. sometimes it's better than the paper gaskets. just make sure to apply it to a clean oil free surface too assure a good seal. fluid gasket does not work at all with anything that contacts fuel.

I'm pretty sure the canal wont effect anything. due to the fluctuations in air pressure in the crankcase the oil myst pretty much finds it's way to anything that needs lubrication.

  • good video i have a question i did this with a 5hp and everytime a try to start it it backfiers and rips the pull cord out of my hand... is it because of the flywheel? thanks

  • @kdwedge243 yes, the flywheel may be the issue, then again check the flywheel key for alignment, and the camshaft for proper timing

  • @kougsohv9 ok thanks, i have a 1 more question, what if i added some wait to the crank, like almost get another flywheel and put on the onther side? i just want to put it on a bike im sure there will be enuff room for a pully

  • @kdwedge243 most lawnmower engines have an aluminum flywheel ant they depend on the rotational inertia of the blade to keep the engine running and idling smoothly. without the blade some engines might not want to idle well, or can not maintain enough inertia to even start. so the answer is yes, by adding weight to the crankshaft (opposite of the flywheel) the weight of whatever you add could help make starting and idling easier. just make sure you leave room for your pully. or use a heavy one.

  • @kougsohv9 well i have a 6.5hp iron flywheel from a tucumshie so ill cut the starter teeth off of it and bor out the hole and add a key way so it will rit the shaft thanks for the help!

  • it works

  • does it still work for a 11hp briggs?

  • @nafissjarrell This basic concept would work for any vertical engine. I am currently doing this on a craftsman 6.75 hp lawnmower motor, and its pretty much the same thing- put something in to throw the oil, re-orient the carb, and reconnect any fuel and air lines you disconnected. If using a newer motor with a plastic molded fuel tank, I'd recommend pulling the gas tank entirely and replacing it with another larger fuel container.

  • @TheEmceeY ok thanks for the help :) I'll scribe

  • Thank you for your great explanation, but don't I need some sort of flywheel? Ihave a large brakedisk which fits, Or a diskbrake drum, I need something heavy for my selfmade 21 speed bicycle clutch.

The oilslinger I made, was from a curved Suzuki TL1000 part.

    btw the engine is running!

    I

  • @kougsohv9 hi, i like your video alot. i am trying to do this with a 6.5hp engine and i have a few questions. 1. how do u remove the pull start and 2. how would you mount this engine horinzontally on a minbike if there are only vertical mounting holes?

  • where did you cut the tube in 3:15 and what type of hose you used?

  • @MegaBuzkill

I cut it right behind the magneto. I used a hose which was lying around the shop. it fit snugly and i used hose clamps

  • Fantastic, keeping it simple. Nice inline6 on the background! chevy?

  • @Artshayarsha yes, that was the old 250ci plant from our chevelle. We ended up selling that motor earlier this year when we put a 350ci in the car. but for the time we had the 6-cyl in there. it was an incredible motor and always ran smooth.

  • I just commented and forgot to say please send your response to andrewmundekis@yahoo.com of you could. thanks!!

  • Wow! Thanks for the video! I hope this will work on any vertical engine! You seem to know your stuff, I however do not so I'm wondering if you could help me out with a problem I have....I would like to make a mini chopper (I say mini but I want it to be pretty big, not like those tiny little 49cc choppers) but I don't understand what I will need to make it work. I know I will need some kind of clutch?? Or do lawn mower engines have a built in clutch I could make work?? And what else would I nee

  • what did you put around the carb and the hose? looks like a spring, whats the reasoning for that?

  • @MegaBuzkill that was the old throttle/governor spring i looped it around the intake and attached it to the arm on the throttle so it returns to idle automatically.

  • could u jus run the crank ventilation to a filter inside of oil going back into the carb?

  • only if i had a hammer...bam bam bam :)

  • tnx for the video, i can do it but i dont have any carb screw (low and high speed screws regulators), and pull start too i dont have. can you help me pliz ?

  • @mapukmapuk the carburetor needs the needles in order to function, so the engine wont run without them. you can start the engine with a drill if you rig it properly. thats how I start my kart

I'm sorry to say but I dont have extra needles or starters around my shop. But there's still hope for your engine. on the blower housing, there is a model, type, and code number stamped in. go to briggs and stratton's website and use the numbers to get a parts list, and order the parts you need from them

  • @kougsohv9 impossible to start with drill (not connecting with any thing) and screw i can make myself but i dont need it if i cant start the engine... i tried to make pullstart but "CRAP", i think i need to find other engine or parts.

    tnx for help!

  • thank you so much! i have the same motor, as soon as i finish school i will see if i can get the motor to run, then will follow your steps and put it in my bike.

only thing though, even if its on idle the it will still be spinning. my question is,

-would it damage the engine if i just held the brakes?

    if so

    - is there a fairly easy way of getting around this?

  • hey gerat vid umm i question ha sthis lasted you like dose it still run?

  • How much oil should be included? I would like to convert mine also.

I think the same as yours. Otherwise, very good video! Thanks!

  • @zekeee07 The oil level should be above the oil splasher that gets installed. there is no exact measurement, when you have the back cover off, estimate how much oil would cover the tip of the splasher by 1/2 an inch or so. do not overfill the crankcase or the crankcase seals may blow out.

  • but will it blend?

  • @maincourseistoocool I bet it would make a Hell of a blender if you hooked it up to a blender cup.

  • VERY INNOVATIVE FOR A YANKEE GOOD JOB

  • @24jeff24gordon eh sometimes they are tough to get off because of corrosion and rust. In most cases, when hand tools are insufficient, an impact gun will remove the bolt. However you run a risk of breaking them that way. you could heat the bolt and surrounding areas lightly and either melt candlewax or spray penetrant oil around the bolt head and try again. usually those work for me

  • @kougsohv9 knock tool while turning.

  • @kougsohv9btw, great engineering, and thanks for sharing it with us. god bless..:)

  • i have a 12.5 lawn tractor engine briggs and str.. could i do this to it???

  • @son8god8damn Yes, But, your engine is a little different: I'm pretty sure your engine does not have the small tube connecting the carb to the block (which allows the carb to pivot) like this small 3hp. yours probably has the carb bolted directly to the cylinder block. However, it still can be done the challenge is building a connector which lets the carb run upright, basically, rotating it 90 degrees. but adding the oil slinger is the same as what i did here. good luck!!

  • dude, all I want to say is

    THANK you

    !

  • Oh and I noticed on my motor the spot to fill oil would be on the very bottom howcan I fix this soi can add oil and it not run back out

  • @dukes20084 every engine is different, but you either need to tighten the dipstick to a point where it seals, or just get some plugs at the hardware store, and build something that works! it's tough for me to say what you should do because i really have no idea what engine you have

  • @kougsohv9 Well my engine is basicly that same as the one is this video

  • @dukes20084 dont quote me on this, but i would try to permanently seal the existing fill hole, then drin a new one on the future top, cut threds in it and find a bolt that will fit snuggly in, ask someone that knows engine first

  • @cody739 well my project with has came to a stop anyway because i was torqueing down the bolts on the head and one of them snapped with only 10lbs of torque but i was lucky and got it out witout doing any damage. I am going to get a new bolt for it but just havent got around to doing it yet.

  • how do i attach this on to my go kart and how do i attach it to the pedal please reply

  • or u could get a pully and drill it out and use a belt clutch

  • alot of new honda motors come with a pair of unthreded bolt holes 90 degrees from the original holes fer this exact situation ^_^ oh and they come with a oil splash already assembled to the bottom of the crank so they stay lubricated they dont burn too much oil but they definitly do burn oil just keep an eye on the oil levels to keep from heat wear

  • Good job man. Two thumbs up.

  • I have tried this before. The best way of going about it (If it bolts right the block), take an inch long piece of pipe and use that to make a new mount for the carb that rotates it 90 degrees. As for the oil slinger, take the crank cover off and make an acrylic cover so you can see where the oil goes and where the slinger is then its all about engineering something to fix the problem, usually filling it with more oil so crankshaft+bottom of connecting rod fling oil.

  • See? This is what I needed. Thanks for the how-to, buddy. I'm your newest subscriber! I have a vert 6.5hp Briggs and I can't WAIT to toss 'er on a homebuilt!

  • @brapboys503 keep in mind that others have done the same thing on youtube! one person put a washer between the camshaft and the back cover where the oil slinger used to be. this reduces cam end play. I didnt do that on my video, and somebody brought it to my attention, it's a good idea though!

  • @kougsohv9 Oh okay thanks for the advice.

  • @jamesroks42 4 stroke

  • does it still work now? if not how long did it run for? thanks!

  • @wolfemancola it still runs! so far i think it ran for about two hours

  • ok once it is all converted, how do u bolt it down to the frame of a mini bike, gocart, etc...? what i saw in the video i can do that easy, i have everything needed,

  • the gas tank needs to be rescrewed...

nah...duct tape will do it! haha

  • does it still have an aluiminum flywheel

  • @elic1010 yes it does

  • @kougsohv9 about your oil problem..all you do is add MORE oil than it needs to make up for the fact it sits all funny...so just figure out the volume of thay crankcase and lets say its a space of 40 ounces...than add oil o the point where that crank will dip into the oil and throw it around...simple enough right?

    hope that helps

  • @christhetromboneguy I suppose your idea would work as well, considering the increase of oil in the crankcase, it would need oil changes less often thats for sure!

  • You need to cut the oil splasher and use it as a washer or there will be too much end play in the camshaft. When I did this, I bolted the 7/16 bolt on the gas tank to the shroud that's behind the carb, just bent it out.

  • @SuperKONR yes, I should edit this, you are correct about the camshaft. cutting the splasher and making a washer is a better way

  • hahaha 5:53 lol

  • That Worked out Well, Cool Idea :)

  • Great Video.. I want to use the converted units for windmill air compressors.

    Thank you!!!

  • how would you connect a cent clutch to it? no keyed shaft only a screw hole at the end? how do you add oil hehehe

  • @joelster69 for the clutch I would machine the crank on my lathe down to 7/8''. take the set screw out of the clutch position it on the output shaft, use a punch to mark the crank, drill a small indentation there insert the set screw. and use locktite. for oil? i turn the engine so it's vertical add oil until it reaches a good level, tighten cap then i turn it over.

  • how would you connect a cent clutch to it? no keyed shaft only a screw hole at the end?

  • tnx for the help i found a better piece of metal=) bye
