I'm a divorced father. When I got divorced, I managed to obtain whole custody of my son. When I played this song on the stereo, I remember my little 3-year-old boy sitting on the stairs and singing "The Royal Mile" along with me... What a nice memory! Now the boy is a great musician..!
Great video apart from the butcher´s apron i.e. the union flag, in one pic. We have our flag, the Saltire, and don´t need that rag.
I look forward to the day when it is torn down from Edinburgh Castle, the colonial headquarters of the occupying English army in Scotland with its Scottish mercenary troops.
@scotsexile1 there's always one who has to bring politics into great music. Be proud to be Scottish, just as I'm proud to be English but people always use the comments page on MUSIC threads to have a pop at politics and history. I am not proud of everything my forefathers have done but this is 2011 and time has moved on. All due respect.
@scotsexile1 Yes, so do the Enlgish. The day that Scotland votes for dissolution of the Union is the day that the world acquires a new third world nation overnight. No hard feelings, but Scotland joined the Union with England because it was bankrupt ( Darien Gap colony ) and their ruling elite were going to get their throats cut by their own people. The English certainly did'nt want union at all but had no say in it. The Scots also gave us the worst dynasty of rulers England has ever known.
@scotsexile1 The Scottish troops in the British Army are no more mercenary than their English, Welsh, other Commonwealth and Irish (from North & South) counterparts.
Estimated friend, if you want to listen again this song and an endless number of successes of the love I suggest you to visit Radio MUSICA PARA MIMOS - looks for his direction URL in Google ( search Musica para Mimos in Google)-. best romantic music of all the times in Internet, is great, is very good ...!!!
Unique voice, I loved it. Troubled life but his songs will live forever. Gerry enjoy peace now. The 1970`s were made special because of the hours I spent listening to your records, "Star" was a fantastic underated song. Never forgotten - The Great Gerry Rafferty.
So sad to hear about Gerry's death, I've just been telling my 13 yr old son (who's too kool for skool) and he's sayin' "thats no the guy who done Baker Street ?" A sad loss;
I'm very sad to hear of Gerry's death.I have all his CDs.I had the privilege of seeing him perform live at Brighton's Dome in 1993,a night I shall never forget. My condolences to his friends and family.
I just read about Gerry's death in The Guardian (Jan. 4, 2011) and was so very sad to learn that. By coincidence, I currently have his "Night Owl" CD on in my car.
Lived in Edinburgh for 20 years, and this song reminds me so much of the city.
Met Gerry and Billy Connolly (humblebums) at the Burnside Hotel Rutherglen in 1969 (poss 1970) - what a night. First saw Billy at the Rockfield hotel Paisley 1967 ish. Happy Days.
@robintopping62 Good stuff. Billy played at one of our local pub/clubs in Hurlford (just outside Kilmarnock) where i live back in the 70's. Think he had one too many lager shandies, ha ha. Been a fan of Gerry's music since the 80's and it was sad to hear of his passing but i was half expecting it, R.I.P.
Gerry apparently wasn't fond of playing live, just like Steely Dan(although they did finally reunite in the 90s to do their first live shows since 1973 or so)
"Royal Mile," "Already Gone," "Baker Street," and "City to City" are the best, but all of Rafferty's music is pure pleasure. Oh, for the good old days of quality music...
I looked all over for this song after my cassettes from the 70's 80's broke. Back then I had no idea what the Royal mile was, it makes the song just that much better,
I haven't heard this song in 30 years, I taped it from the radio, unfortunately all my belongings got destroyed including my tapes, then I discovered You Tube and I said to myself, let me see if I can find this song I couldn't believe it I found it , thanks for this video you made me very happy that tears are running down my eyes, again thank you.
I first heard this while I was visiting the Isle of Man TT races one hot summer in my 20's many years ago and it ALWAYs brings back wonderful memories of my now deceased brother and the great times we enjoyed on the island and the laughs we had there. Any time I want to remember my brother I play this song. Fantastic!
I am glad to hear so many have rediscovered this great song. I feel lucky as I have never lost track of this song. It's one of my favorite of all times and have listened to it what has to be over a hundred times. Gerry Rafferty is one great song writer and artist.
I heard this in the 70s. heard it once. never, ever, ever, ever forgotten it. almost scared to revisit. fear unnecessary. i'm crying again, thank you, Gerry, wherever you are
He has a unique voice.Have to explain to young uns just how big he was in the 70s.He knocked Saturday night fever off the top of the us charts.Probably he got too big and he didnt want that but boy he did some fantastic music and many happy memories when people appreciated quality music.
I first heard 'The Royal Mile' back in the early 1980s -- only once on the radio! It remained in my head for quite a while, and I never forgot it! And here we are, many years later, and I decided to YouTube the song ... and found it. Thanks for posting it, RayMaclean. Gerry's music is exceptional. I just pray that he can rid himself of the demons haunting him and that he goes on to live a happy life.
Gerry Rafferty was a TOTAL ! Original, and one of the greatest artist that ever came out of
Scotland.
