  • The problems are quite simple:

    1) You cannot charge someone who makes $50,000 a year $700,000 for a house, and then call it a "real estate collapse" when he can't afford it, and, doesn't buy it.

    2) You cannot nickel-and-dime employees by exporting good-paying jobs overseas, and then letting them fight for the scraps of whatever low-paying jobs are left here at home.

    3) You cannot hire one person to do the job of 3 people. This is just simple arithmetic, and will never work, not now, not ever.

  • FAIL! The economy was crashing at annualized rate of 6.4% in Q4 2008. In Q4 2009, it was expanding at annualized rate of 5%. The stimulus turned the economy around. You can debate how effective it was. Claiming that it was "bad for the economy" exposes you as someone not capable of seriously discussing the matter.

Theres a broad study done by the federal reserve of Minneapolis which concluded that the deflationary spiral doesn't exist. But you're right, deficit spending does not shift income. The inflation which follows can have a negative effect on consumption however, so the idea of a stimulus can be pretty self defeating.

    Guess what? We were in a situation just like the 30s in 2008.

The show only two instances out of over 100 where deflation and depression were linked, and they explain one of them away. The other one (The Great Depression) can be attributed to many factors outside of deflation. No, we were not in that same situation in 2008. Deflation always occurs during a credit crunch. You're confusing correlation and causation.

  • I am afraid that the stimulus plan not only failed (based on the unemployment rate as of 10/10), but put us $900B more in debt. I think the national debt is a serious issue. Once the Fed can not longer keep our bond yields artificially low, the interest payments on the debt will crush future budgets.     The right to secede from the union is a very heavily debated topic, one which I find it hard to come to one belief or another. I think that if a state were to want to govern itself as its own country, seperate from our federal government that it should have that ability, but I also find that that ability could lead to petty devisive problems that will tear this nation apart for no logical reason.

Each year of spending (at the current rate) will take 10 years to pay back, therefore if the Government were required to adhere to the same standards as private individuals & public corporations, Government must reduce spending by 90%.   • i think that this video is great some how. but truly if we look at what are the component of the GDP, which is a basic measure of a country's economic performance, it justifies Obama's spending policies. GDP= private consumption + gross investment + government spending + (exports − imports).

    so if C is low and I is low to so we need to increase government spending to try to balance the equation. However the results are not instant .

    When Bush was spending money the economy was ok until the collapse of the housing bubble and the subsequent bank failures. He's insinuating that the increased government spending was connected to the current downturn when the events are distinct.

    I'm no fan of Bush and I don't think government spending is the "one and only" policy, but this guy reeks of politics not economics.

    you can find on youtube some of the financial committee hearings from 2003-'04 i think when Congress was warned of the impending fanny mac disaster. they blew it off and said everything was fine and decided to increase the affordable housing goals => runaway housing spending (that's increased gov't. spending) => burst bubble and an economic crash. now the gov't. won't let houses fall to a 'natural' low, instead they keep pumping air into the bubble

    Greenspan used to talk about the "miracle of productivity growth" to explain unwarranted market market expansion. The expansion was instead from Federal Reserve money printing. There was no productivity increase. This was not the birth of another industrial age. Ethically and moraly bankrupt.

  • Of course it wasn't the overspending that tanked the economy. Mitchell's point is that if government spending was stimulatory we would be in the middle of a great period of prosperity, not the depression we are actually in.

    A larger point is: Why do the Democrats lack consistency? If spending is great then they should love Bush as the father of the Obama economic plan just as they should praise Hoover for starting the programs that FDR would later refer to as the "New Deal".

  • This video assumes that the quantity of money is fixed, but government can increase the money supply and use that increase to finance economic growth.

    This is especially effective in a deflationary spiral since the increased money supply/money velocity would lead to price increases and stabilization.

  • The reason inflation is stable despite the rapid monetary growth is that the number of times a dollar is spent in a year has been falling. People have been hoarding cash and not buying "stuff".

    Once excess inventories are worked off and global commodity prices begin to rise again, inflation fears will come back quickly and people will rush to get rid of their dollars by buying "stuff". Unless the Fed can quickly extinguish all of the new money it has created, inflation will come roaring back.

  • Look up the meaning of the word "deflation" before you start insulting the intelligence of an economics graduate on his way to getting his masters.

    In a deflationary spiral, prices can go down to a point that is below the cost/incentive to produce. This issue is much more dangerous than inflation because it attacks production head on.

    Increasing the money supply can bring stabilization to price levels by increasing them and releasing deflationary pressure. It's increasing prices for a reason

    The question that arises is "how much pay should be lost per politician". Perhaps instead of that, they should be paid monthly commissions proportional to their approval rating, with a base salary equal to the average salary in the region they represent.

    I) Reporting payroll, dividends, and/or COGS above the actual value

    II) Reporting revenue and/or retained earnings below the actual value

    Excepting overstating dividends, all these actions to reduce the tax base illegally would also reduce the perceived value of the company, so no rational company would dare do any of things.

  • Solution to the crisis:

    * Take payrolls, personal income, and dividends out of the tax base.

    * Deduct payrolls, personal income, and dividends from the tax base of a value added tax.

    * Institute a consumption tax with a rate equal to the value added tax (17%).

    This will:

    * Encourage greater investment in labor, consumer, and dividend capital

    * Encourage insourcing

    * Promote a tax rate lower than FairTax rate

    * Increase the value of the American workforce

    * Increase returns on pension funds

  • I think you forgot slashing the salaries of The federal Executive, Legislative and Judicial branches. Those who get paid the most will get the highest reductions.

    I don't know if it would "stimulate" anything, but it would be nice to see those "in charge" actually give a shit and try for once some of the things private companies have to do in order to survive.

  • I wanted to share something that might put the size of the US deficit in perspective. If USA was to pay $1 every second to pay down their debt it would go like this

    $1,000,000 debt = 11 days

    $100,000,000 debt = 3 years 61 days

    $10,000,000,000 debt = 316 years 321 days

    $1 trillion debt (like 2009's deficit) = 31688 years

    The current US debt is 11.178 trillion which would require 354,226 yrs

    Now obviously it would not take this long, I just wanted to shed some light on how big these numbers are!
