You haven't listened to enough country to know what it's really about. There are many, many positive songs in country music. Granted, some country songs fall into the stereotype, but MOST country music doesn't talk about "dogs dying" or "losing their farm." For example, Lonstar's "Amazed" doesn't fall into the stereotype nor does "Concrete Angel" by Martina McBride speak of those stereotypes you mentioned. There are many country songs that speak volumes about life issues.

While bluegrass took appalachian folk music and combined it with the blues, country took white southern folk music and combined it with the blues. Indeed, many country artists cover popular blues songs of the times. It's the combination that made country work, and white folk music was never forgotten either.

You might enjoy artists like Jimmie Rodgers, Roy Acuff, early Ernest Tubb, Hank Williams Sr., Maddox Brothers and Rose, Bob Wills, and the Carter Family (although the last one belongs more to bluegrass.) Country music isn't just about the Nashville excess of the 70s or the anti-intellectual Wal-Mart country of the 90's and 00's. Even good country still exists. Uncle Tupelo, Gillian Welch or 16 Horsepower might fit your needs. Have fun, and remember not to judge books by their covers.
